Lyr Req: Rose and the Rock (Albion Band)

would anyone have complete lyrics for Ashley/Albion Band "The Rose and the Rock"? Have inquired of the Guv'nor himself (via his website) and he says no "definitive" set exists. Here's what I have so far:

As we sailed to the islands
The Rose and the Rock
We heard the ancient hills
?Heave a sigh as they set?
Dazzled by the light
The Rose and the Rock
We stood upon the deck
And we laughed and we wept

As we headed to our shelter
The Rose and the Rock
We heard a ?
?
No waves like the sea
The Rose and the Rock
No summer like the skies
That she holds in her hands

No amber like the sun
The Rose and the Rock
No good is like the sun
As it sets in the west
No jet just like the rock
The Rose and the Rock
No ruby like the rose
That she holds to her breast

We are returning home
The Rose and the Rock
We have traveled far
Now our wandering will cease
We are returning home
The Rose and the Rock
?Put the children in the cradle ?
Of the earth and the breeze

Seven miles offshore
The Rose and the Rock
The mistral tied the two
In a true lovers' knot
Fifty fathoms down
The Rose and the Rock
Love and death together
The Rose and the Rock

Would welcome any assistance in the reconstruction; thanks!

all the best,

cjs (christopher.smith@ttu.edu)

Just searching now. Got them somewhere buried in a disc archive.

The line in the first verse should be "Heave a sigh as they slept".

Alex Lyons was kind enough to find the complete set for me--but thanks to all (as ever) for their promptitude and collegiality! As I told Alex, in response to his query regarding why I wanted the text:

"I run a small "Celtic" ensemble (unfortunate term, but it's the one most Americans recognize) at my university here in West Texas. Each semester, the ensemble, which learns and plays by ear and from the memory, prepares a program on a specific theme, drawing from across the whole Celtic world, and the spring 2010 program is focused around sea-music: chanteys, instrumental tunes and dances, and narrative ballads/etc on maritime topics. Have always really loved the version of "R&R" that's on the Ashley box set (love the mandolin/fiddle duel) and it seemed to me it could work for our students.

See below (extract from promotional materials), and thanks again so much for your help!

"You can find the ensemble's website at http://ttucelticensemble.com
"The ensemble's video channel is http://youtube.com/ttucelticensemble

And, Phil B, if you're Phil Beers (forgive me not knowing for sure), the mandolin/fiddle duel on the live version by Albion Band was the main motivation for my guys to want to play it. Thank you!!!

all the best,

Glad you like it. Thats where I came into the Albions. Still haven't come across the appropriate lyric file but I'll search again in a couple of days. My first Albion live show was at Dartington Great hall and that was one of the songs on the menu. Happy days.
Now why do american cousins consistently want to say Phil 'Beers'. I've just done an acoustic show with Paul Barrere of Little Feat and he still wants to add the 'S'. I'm fascinated.

Maybe for the same reason that my American family insists on calling British beer "bitters".

Happy new year, Phil!

Whoops! "Beer" as in "beer", eh?

Thanks again.

It has been a long time and this thread is probably going to be a shambling zombie with no real purpose, but: -

As we sailed to the islands
The Rose and the Rock
We heard the ancient hills
Heave a sigh as they slept
Dazzled by the light
The Rose and the Rock
We stood upon the deck
And we laughed and we wept

The vine shall be our shelter
The Rose and the Rock
The olive grove our store
Chamomile for our beds
No jade is like like the sea
The Rose and the Rock
No sapphire like the sky
Stretching over our heads

No amber like the sand
The Rose and the Rock
No gold is like the sun
As he sets in the west
No jet is like the rock
The Rose and the Rock
No ruby like the rose
That she holds to her breast

We are returning home
The Rose and the Rock
We have traveled far
Now our wandering will cease
We are returning home
The Rose and the Rock
Rock your children in the cradle
Of the Earth Mother Greece

Just seven miles off Delos
The Rose and the Rock
The Mistral tied the two
In a true lovers' knot
Fifty fathoms down
The Rose and the Rock
Love and death together
The Rose and the Rock

I think that is pretty definitive.
