We will try to mke it but a lot depends on the weather. At the moment it's not possible to drive out of our village.

It would be wonderful if we could make the same sort of celebration and festival of life that we did for Col K. It was a wonderful send off for a wonderful guy and I think Theresa deserves the same.

Blessings

We would really like to come along, but not sure how we'd manage in this weather from Surrey. It would be wonderful if a Memorial Day could be planned so that we can all get together to celebrate knowing Theresa. This Lady deserves a really good send-off!!

Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley/treaties funeral-14 January 2010
From: MoorleyMan

In normal circumstances I too would definitely be planning to attend, but the weather conditions have been, and are forecast to be, atrocious and even a relatively short (in mileage terms) trans-Pennine journey is extremely hazardous. I've been grounded for the past three weeks, and I can't see the situation improving before Thursday, sadly.

Theresa deserves the very best of send-offs, and the comparison with ColK is well made, so Hils I think your idea is much more sensible for when the big freeze is over - count me in for that!

'Twas Rhiannon's suggestion really, but I do hope that something can be worked out by someone close to Theresa. We'd definitely be up for that! I'm certain that a lot of Theresa's friends will still be able to get to the funeral if the weather can just calm down a bit!

I'm not likely to make it from London to Manchester on Thursday, but
here's the shanty I sang for Theresa on the bad shirts and shanty day in the Endeavour at Whitby in 2001, after she won the Saltburn shanty competition:

I'm feeling sad and so forlorn
Sing 'em loud
Can't help the gender I was born
Sing 'em loud

We weedy women high and shrill
Sing 'em loud
Can't compete with Jim or Bill
Sing 'em loud

While they are belting out each word
Sing 'em loud
We women struggle to be heard
Sing 'em loud

But there is one who breaks the rule she
Sings 'em loud
Her name it is Theresa Tooley, she
Sings 'em loud

I spoke to Hilary yesterday (another founder member of Saddleworth Folk Festival) and we both agreed that it would be good to have an event at this year's festival in memory of Theresa - possibly the Sunday Sing which she led for several years with such joy and passion.

My thoughts will be thinking of those able to attend in UK and I also would like to attend a memorial as I decided I couldn't get back from China, so being selfish I hope if a memorial celebration is planned it is after 23rd March when I will be back and any significant snow WILL e over in UK
Here's part of the song I like to sing after a friend has died

If there are any folks in Leeds, who would like to car share with me, do PM.

"What a singing there will be" when you get home. Part of a line from a Helen Schneyer song. Sure wish Helen and Theresa could have met. Maybe they will now. Thanks for the memories, Theresa. Given that we're being snowed on again, I'm not going to be able to make it up as I was hoping to.

I couldn't help but think of her in church on Sunday,as we sang 'When the Roll is called up yonder' (I've sung it many times and at least once with Theresa, but always clutching a pint mug, in a pub - never sober and in church before!)... God Speed, Theresa, there'll be a candle burning and a tot waiting for you tomorrow night.

I was saddened to hear of Teresa's passing. Although I have known Teresa for a number of years and heard her sing many times my abiding memory is of her singing "Union Miner " at Cleckheaton a few years ago.
Unfortunately I wont be able to attend the funeral but I'll look out for the memorial concert.
Teresas humour and zest for singing was infectious and uplifting.
I'll raise a glass to you tomorrow Teresa.

I live just down the road but, unfortunately, work in Leeds, so will not be able to get there. I was hoping to book the day off but a 3 hour jurney in this morning and not arriving till 10:30 scuppered that idea:-(

Theresa was a regular at Swinton before her illness and always cheered us up with that mighty voice. She will be missed. If anyone wants a venue for a celebration of her life in the near future I can always ask at the White Lion where our club is. Just PM me.

Cheers

Hi folks

Info for anyone else interested in a ride from Leeds Train Station:

Will be picking up between 10.30-11.00. As its such a big place, lets agree to meet away from the meetng place. Head L after exiting the ticket check point, go down the slope past the ticket purchasing windows (staying within the train station). On the L-hand side is McDonalds and Subways, and on the R-hand side is window display of bridal wear. There is some seating between, and I shall meet folks there who have not been in touch. We shall be leaving promotely at 11am

By going so early, this will allow 90mins for the journey, plus a chance to get a warm drink / tidy up before heading to the funeral.

Also it hopefully allow enough time in case there are any accidents.

My number is 0772 723 1990

A warm (if snowy) and wonderful send off to an old and dear friend

Tears of sadness were replaced with laughter as Theresa's coffin was carried out of the crematorium to Gracie Fields Lankie tones singing 'Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye'

Songs and personal stories in the club afterwards.

'So here's to you, and our time together.
I will share with you a parting glass,
And bid adieu with some smile and laughter,
Our time apart will be short, and pass.'

Thanks to all who helped to make this a tribute to a life that touched so many others

Like so many others, I just wasn't able to make it, but took time out to remember.

So many memories of that irrepressible little bundle of energy: too many to list them all, but especially with the Shellbacks in the States, and that mega-sing in the bar at Banbury (2002?) with the Shells, the Laners, etc. And here in Alcester, Theresa leading "Circle of the Sun" when one of the firemen's children was christened at the Festival church service.

Bury my body in a circle of the sun,
Circle of the sun on my dying day

It was a good day. A good turn out despite the weather, I think between 100 and 120 of us. Once the service had started if I caught sight of the funeral directors they had smiles on their faces. Proof that it was a celebration of a life.
I wish I had been able to stay for the sing around.

So how about organising a day of song for her sometime in June - something a bit further south so us down yer who knew her and couldn't get up thur to say goodbye properly can get to.

I'm happy to try and sort something in east London if people want...

What a memorable day for such a memorable lady, I only Knew Theresa for 4 years, but will remember her for the rest of my life. I'm not a member of the 'folk community' but certainly felt one yesterday, the singing was wonderful, and thanks Marie for enabling me to get there.

Would love to attend any memorial celebration, and buy the CD if it's made.

God Bless you all

Jan Hanmer.

A great turnout for a great lady. We hardly felt the cold yesterday in the warmth of affection for that "grand old lady of music" From Opera to Folk by way of all the steps in between she was surely one of the great entertainers. It was hard to get through the service without tearing-up at so many many memories of her.
Well at least the "Choir Invisible" will have at least one good singer now! and speaking from personal experience she will improve the performance of all those that sing with her there.
"Go for it T!"

I'm now safely home after a long journey and reflecting on our tribute and farewell to Theresa. Lady in red springs to mind!    Theresa was never one to be inconspicuous and she really proved that yesterday.    A wonderful day of friendship and song

I think it was the weather rather than the distance that prevented some folk from getting to the funeral. If a memorial day/weekend is to be arranged I think it is important that it be as central as possible rather than at one end of the country or another. Somewhere in the Midlands would probably be the best solution. If anyone knows a field with a pub in that area that would allow lots of folkies to descend at a reasonable cost and make a full weekend of it that could be the answer.

Good thought Jane. It was a bit of both that stopped my journey - but a Midland weekend gathering should be do-able... is the post Easter W'end any good?? Any takers for Sat 10 Apr?? Sorry NO venue idea as I'm not familiar with the area - but near the M1 would be brill.

At the Wassail tonight I had a word with Nigel at the Fleece Inn, Bretforton, where Teresa sang on a couple of Shellbacks Cookley weekend tours, and also at Foxtrot weekends. The pub has camping facilities and a tithebarn for singing. Nigel would be more than willing to host it if a suitable weekend is available (it's in demand for weddings, etc).

PM me for contact details if you want to talk dates with Nigel

Looks lovely. However, two things occur to me. Firstly, does it have public transport links of a decent nature nearby. Secondly, is the location one which has a good supply of B&B accommodation close by ? Not all of us have cars, or would wish to camp.
:-(

Here is the address for the Fleece. You could google it to see about accommodation etc:
The Cross
Bretforton, Evesham, WR11 7JE

It would be a great venue, Vaughan. I will pm you.

Surreysinger,

Not really, but that's not what Mrs Duck asked for: I merely supplied one possible answer to her specific request. Feel free to investigate alternative venues - the more the better.

Bus timetable for Bretforton. There are railway stations at Honeybourne (2.5miles) and Evesham (5.5 miles).

For B&B etc Google "B&B Bretforton" or "hotel Bretforton" or "inn Bretforton" etc

There must be somewhere a bit more central although I can't think of any 'off the top of my head'. Oh there's Norwell but the pub's a bit small.
The weekend of the 9th April is Banbury Song weekend - perhaps something could happen there - someone would need to contact Merek and Dary. However it would be good to organise a whole weekend for Theresa. I'm sure Ugthorpe Lodge near Whitby would love to host a weekend but it's a bit too far north presumably. Or perhaps Alcester's song Weekend venue would suit?
How about Preston, Angie and Ken's venue, not the school but the pub where's the 4 Fools is this year?
Any other ideas?

Bretforton sounds good (and the barn has a good sound). I would be interested.
I also have an additional suggestion.
Whatever date / venue is decided upon we are not all going to be able to make it. So Yes to a Memorial Concert but why not a lot of others does as well.
For the rest of this year why don't we all remember Theresa in the way she would like best. At EVERY festival we have connections with, let's persuade the organisers to nominate one of the Sing-a-Rounds as the "Theresa Tooley Memorial Sing-a-Round" and let's all sing our favourite songs that we sang with T. That way every-one can join in somewhere.
Pass the thought on.
Jim

I agree with both Jim that a singaround in honour of Theresa is an eminent idea and I suspect will be actively supported by Ali O'Brian for Saddleworth FF.

Vaughan's suggestion (Snuffy) is also something I would support.

Theresa had one of her songs sung for her at the Sussex Sing on Saturday where there were quite a few of her Sussex Shellback friends.
Sorry not to make the funeral, but she will be remembered for a very long time.
The sing "up there" is getting too many good 'uns at the moment.
