07 Jan 10 - 03:26 PM (#2805947) Subject: Old Time Music Fest, Gainsborough UK Feb From: nickp Gainsborough Old Time Festival - February 12th to 14th, 2010 Queen Elizabeth High School Morton Terrace, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire DN21 2ST (different venue to previous years) Guest artists are The Slate Mountain Rammblers from Ararat, Virginia with dancer Marty Todd. From the UK are 44 Gun String Band (Somerset and Devon) and The New River Roustabouts (Derbyshire). Dancing from Sara Marshall and Carly Green. The weekend will feature, concerts, open stage, dances, shapenote and gospel singing, slow jam, a range of workshops plus the return of the Scratch Band competition amongst others. Workshops will also include fiddle, banjo, guitar and bass. As well as the Scratch Band competition, there will also be competitions for fiddle, banjo and dance (youth, adult and seniors). Weekend tickets £50, Saturday all day £30, Friday or Saturday evening £15 (all less 10% for current FOAOTMAD and BBMA members). Indoor camping, food and food available. Richard is a first class fiddler in the Round Peak style who learned a lot of his tunes and technique from Tommy Jarrel, Earnest East, Benton Flippen and other brilliant musicians from the Mount Airy area in North Carolina. Each member of the band have won many individual prizes at fiddler's conventions in the Southern Appalachians, and the whole band's run off with a few as well. I've jammed with the Bowmans at their home in Ararat, just over the Virginia border - an experience that made me realise just how great these people are. I can't wait to see them again! Cheers Ray |

Don't worry if you don't know the tunes, they get played through enough times to get into them(unless you play a bodhran, of course, in which case the session will probably move away from you!). The session tend to stay in one key for a while, as banjos and fiddles often have to retune for a key change. However there's nearly an infinite number of great tunes in all the common keys (D,G,C,A). If you're a beginner there's a slow jam some time during the weekend that'll be well worth joining. |

I've been playing (mainly mandolin and guitar) for a long time and do know a reasonable number of old-time tunes although that wasn't my primary genre in the past, and can usually pick new tunes up fairly quickly. I'll look to see if the logistics work for stopping by sometime over the weekend. |

Woody & Alan came to our session on Monday - Woody's a lovely fiddler with a great old time feel. It'll be great to see Carly dancing with them. |
