The Slate Mountain Ramblers consist of Richard Bowman on fiddle, his wife Barbara on bass and daughter Marsha on banjo, plus a guitar player I don't know. Richard is a first class fiddler in the Round Peak style who learned a lot of his tunes and technique from Tommy Jarrel, Earnest East, Benton Flippen and other brilliant musicians from the Mount Airy area in North Carolina. Each member of the band have won many individual prizes at fiddler's conventions in the Southern Appalachians, and the whole band's run off with a few as well. I've jammed with the Bowmans at their home in Ararat, just over the Virginia border - an experience that made me realise just how great these people are. I can't wait to see them again!
Cheers

The comment I usually hear when Richard Bowman is mentioned is that he is 'the real thing'...

I have to say though that I dont quite know what the thing to be real is... but I guess it must be his fiddling.

Nickp,

Very roughly speaking, to say that Richard is "the real thing" means he plays the music of the place he was born and raised in, and it is a place that has music that can meaningfully be called its own.

Here's a quote from "The Crooked Road":

"Fiddler Richard Bowman comes from the Bowman Family, another musical family from Patrick County that has dominated the music scene for more than 200 years!

HI Russ, yes, I'd assumed so. I have actually seen him perform (Fiddlers Grove a few years ago) - and the band too I guess. It'll make life interesting at the festival.

Any shapenote / sacred harp workshops this year?

BusyBee Paul - Shape note is mentioned in the first posting on this thread. There is also a blicky link to the FOATMAD web site. If you visit and follow links there is a downloadable poster!! which also mentions shape note.
I expect finer programme details will appear here closer to the event.

Quack!

I'm pretty sure Cath Tyler will be there - she usually leads the shape note workshops. She's a terrific expert at it, and I always try to make it to her workshop.

Thanks guys,

Although it said "shapenote" in the opening post, it didn't specify a shapenote workshop, so I was just checking!. I came to Cath's workshops last year and have since joined a shapenote group in Lincoln.

Haven't been to one of these before and will be travelling back from London to Scotland so could be interesting to call by. What opportunities are there to participate in sessions?

Hi Zen, from previous experience the weekend seems to be a never-ending oldtime session. I sometimes think that the workshops and concerts are purely incidental!

Zen, the session opportunities are tremendous. Don't worry if you don't know the tunes, they get played through enough times to get into them(unless you play a bodhran, of course, in which case the session will probably move away from you!). The session tend to stay in one key for a while, as banjos and fiddles often have to retune for a key change. However there's nearly an infinite number of great tunes in all the common keys (D,G,C,A). If you're a beginner there's a slow jam some time during the weekend that'll be well worth joining.

Thanks nickp and BanjoRay... it's good to know that it's session-rich. I've been playing (mainly mandolin and guitar) for a long time and do know a reasonable number of old-time tunes although that wasn't my primary genre in the past, and can usually pick new tunes up fairly quickly. I'll look to see if the logistics work for stopping by sometime over the weekend.

What's the NRR line up Ray? I know they have Carly dancing with them.

It should be Paul Wood (Woody) on fiddle, Alan McGavin on guitar & vocal, Di McGavin on bass and a finger-style old time banjo player called Bernie (unknown surname).
Woody & Alan came to our session on Monday - Woody's a lovely fiddler with a great old time feel.
It'll be great to see Carly dancing with them.
