BS: Sore that wont heal

From: kendall

I have a sore on my throat just under my larynx that just wont heal. Been through three courses of anti biotics and my ENT doensn't know what it is. So, he sentenced me to a CT scan which I had this morning.
I've always healed up much quicker than anyone I know but not this time.
It's just one damn thing after another.

Your immune system is shot because of the radiation and all the damned antibiotics.

Sometimes, a deep infection needs to heal from the inside out. The doctor puts a sort of tape through each side. Twice a day, you slide the tape back and forth to keep the incision scab free so it heals from the inside out. This can be a real problem if you have your ear pierced and then let the hole heal over. It forms a cyst and a recurring infection site. I have seen people with a golf ball size infection on their ear lobe. GROSS!
Given your medical history, Captain, and the radiation, better to be safe than sorry. Your doctor is right to do every test and err on the side of caution.
No fun for you, I know. No fun for Jacqui either. Maybe some lobster would help?

No Becca. Kendall is right. He usually heals amazingly fast. The cut from his back hoe ride was gone in days. Whatever - he can't be too careful.

This spot on his throat is significantly deeper than the cut from the back hoe.
I agree he needs to be careful but I also know I've had many abscesses like the one he had and they take a long time to heal. Couple that with the fact that the one on his throat is gigantic and there you have it.

hi kendal

Sorry to hear about yet another problem.

Having been through the throat cancer loop I know what you are going through.

I too had problems after bouts of laser and radio radio surgery.

I live in NW England and over here The National Health Service respond VERY quickly to patients who have had cancer ( despite what the critics say).

I saw doctors and consultants who examined me and put my mind at rest.
It is only natural to be concerned.....we all are !!!

After a short while the sore throats ceased with the exception of the odd dry throat ( especially afetr I have a tipple or too...!!!).

I have now started to sing again....not in public only to myself and sometimes a microphone ( my wife calls us the 2 Mikes...lol)

I don't have the range or the power as before ( no bad thing !!!) but I am having an interesring time re-arranging all my songs into registers and ranges that I can manage.

Stay with it.....we are all with you.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Mike

Slow vs won't heal is a wide divide to check out.

I can once again walk after 20 months of being disabled from both achilles tendons tearing and swelling. By the time I sought specialst care in Nov. it started to heal most rapidly with no treatment. Slow but it did heal significantly. In fact I even think better. About 22 months ago I was sprayed with pesticides over the fence by my neioghbors lawn care cretin.

That made the 3rd exposure in 6 years.

Skin can take far longer to heal with diabetes sometimes, Kendall. My skin used to heal very fast, but now, it doesn't. Not always though, and that's the strange part. Sometimes I heal in a few days, others it's weeks or months..Bit bloody annoying, but it happens.

I hope things start to heal over soon and that's good news from your specialist.

When part of where they cracked me open on my chest wouldn't heal, the surgeon said to put antibiotic ointment on it. I did and it was worse because it made me itch like crazy. I thought itchy might signify healing, so I tried to leave it alone. It was scary to look at and I was afraid to touch it. It was dark with under-the-skin blood and pulsed. Finally, out of desperation and due to intuition, I cleaned the ointment off, esp. after finding it had lanolin in it which I am allergic to(!) and used a diluted solution of iodine (betadine) swabbed on it. Iodine kills germs etc. In just a couple of days it was healing and within a week it was much, much better.

My vet told me about iodine. He said never to use ointment on a pet's wound as it smothers the area so that it can't get oxygen which helps with healing. He recommends diluted iodine for any cuts, abrasions, and closed wounds.

Hope this helps.

That area has been flooded with radiation which retards the healing process.

The radiation would have damaged cells, hopefully most of them were cancer cells. There IS no radiation now, although maybe the cells may not reproduce like they used to. Hell, a lot of things I have, including mosquito bites, don't heal anywhere near as fast as they used to.

It really does sound more like an ingrown hair or a cyst with something stuck in it than anything else. Also, just because I talked about mosquito bites up there, is there any chance it's an insect/arachnid bite/sting? Not all of them will cause itching.

Kendall -

The old stuff was "tincture of iodine." Iodine "dissolved" in alcohol.

It stings, partly because of the iodine but mostly because of the alcohol required to "dissolve" it. If you bandage a cut you've put it on, it can blister the skin. If you use it too frequently on a spot it can permanently change the skin color. Excessive use can damage your thyroid function(?) and for that reason it's sale is limited in several states. If mixed (correctly) with ammonia, it makes a dandy explosive.

The new stuff is "isodine" in which the iodine is part of a slightly more complex molecule, but is released as free iodine as the compound breaks down (more slowly). It's most commonly sold in my area as "Betadine," which I think is just a "trade name" for it.

Isodine/Betadine doesn't (in any case I've seen) sting, but is as effective as the "tincture" at killing the bugs.

Ask your local pharm shop.

John

No more Iodine for me; I'm tougher than Japanese math, but that's just too much.

I put some honey on it and a band aid last night. Slept like a baby, (awake every two hours looking for a nipple).

Seriously, I think the honey is the best idea yet. After all, it is used to cure stomach ulcers. Thanks, Monique. And thanks to John; you are wise beyond your years.

I'm not diabetic, I just checked my glucose and it was 115, after a cup of coffee. It's always a bit high first thing in the morning, but it drops to around 90 or so in the late afternoon.

Subject: RE: BS: Sore that wont heal
From: Monique

Raw, unprocessed honey is what you need. I spoke lately with a beekeeper and he said that honey looses its properties when warmed over 40°C (104F) -
"Excessive heat can have detrimental effects on the nutritional value of honey.[45][46] Heating up to 37°C causes loss of nearly 200 components, part of which are antibacterial. Heating up to 40°C destroys invertase, an important enzyme. Heating up to 50°C turns the honey into caramel (the most valuable honey sugars become analogous to sugar). Generally any larger temperature fluctuation (10°C is ideal for preservation of ripe honey) causes decay.[47]" from Wiki.
In your case lavender honey is best because of the healing properties of lavender.

Kendall, I'm surprised your glucose is high first thing - mine is usually low-to-spot-on, due to the 10-or-so-hours I've fasted since dinner.

When I read your first post I immediately thought 'Diabetes!'. I don't understand the measuring conventions in the USA, you have a different system to us over here, but what is the 'normal' or 'recommended' level? How does '115' compare against that? Here, we aim for 6.5 Mmol, and mine is almost always between 5.5 and 6.5 first thing (unless I'm a naughty boy and eat cake at bedtime!).

You say you're not diabetic - have you had all the tests for that (including the Glucose-Tolerance test which indicates the rate at which your system deals with a large, rapid intake of glucose)?

I know your system's been beaten with several very big sticks this past few years, but don't disregard the possibility of Diabetes. It, too, is a killer.

And, of course, very best wishes for a good outcome.

Honey is a natural antibiotic. See this part of the Wikipedia entry on honey.

I wonder though, that if the antibiotics didn't work, whether it's actually an infection or something else (already mentioned). The honey won't hurt anything though, and will likely help any sort of healing.

I don't suppose anyone here is considering that he just listen to the doctor? So far iodine and honey and then silver. If it doesn't heal, Jacqui is going to have a lot of splainin' to do to the doctor.

Hmmm..JohninKS, the bottle I have of iodine, Walgreens' own brand, says "Povidone Iodine 10% Topical Solution" and I can guarantee it does not sting. Also, there is no alcohol in it. Main ingredient is "providone iodine USP, 10% w/v (equivalent to 1% titratable iodine)" and inactive ingredients of "citric acid, glycerin, Makon8, purified water, and sodium hydroxide."

At any rate, I am glad to hear the honey may be helping, Kendall!

Hi Kendall, sorry to hear you have yet more trials and tribulations to deal with, but I'm sure you'll beat this one, too.

The first rememdy I always try is tea tree oil, from Australia. I'm pretty sure it is available in the US. There are very, very few skin complaints that it doesn't seem to help. It is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. I dilute it with water if it is for something which might sting, by wetting a cotton ball and then putting a couple of drops of tea tree oil on the cotton ball. It clears most things up within a few days.

But another excellent natural healer, especially if the wound needs to be kept moist, is aloe vera. You can either split a piece of aloe vera lengthwise and place the gel sides down on the wound and then put a bandaid over it, or you can get the aloe vera gel in a tube from pharmacists (drug stores) or health food stores.

Both of these remedies would work well with each other, and with the honey, too.

Take care.

The coolness when it's in the frig is really nice when put on a burn or anything else that is "angry" looking (skin-wise only!**bg**) Well, except that you can also drink the juice. It's good, too.

Yes Ebbie, I forgot about papaya. Someone told me about it recently and I bought the ointment.

I scalded myself with steam from the electric jug a couple of months ago - not intentionally, of course. It switched off and I reached in front of it just as a last puff of steam came out. It was pretty bad because I foolishly didn't stop to do proper first aid, and I lived with the consequences of that for about a month.

In the end I used burn gel, antiseptic cream, tea tree oil, aloe vera plant & gel, and papaya ointment. (I forgot about aloe until I Googled burns treatments. I raided my aloe plant which was quietly chugging away in a pot, hidden by other bigger plants. I moved back the other leaves and here was a big crop of aloe, just waiting to help me out. I stuck a couple of little plants in another pot and it is doing nicely. too. It grows by just sticking some of the "leaves" in the soil, as well.)

My scald got better much quicker when I started using the aloe vera & papaya as well as tea tree oil, but the red mark is still there. Now I'm treating that with aloe vera plant and it is slowly fading.

But tea tree oil is always the first thing I use for just about everything.

Hi again Kendall,

It's probably important to know what else is in the skin cleansing oil. If it has a lot of other ingredients it may not be the best option for putting on a sore. Of the two choices, the lavender may be a better option. Here in Oz, we get the tea tree oil on its own, with nothing added, and it's excellent. Check the label of the cleansing oil to see if it warns not to put it on broken skin, etc.

Re; stinging, that's why I dilute it with water on a cotton ball, to stop the stinging.

And re: Jeri's question, I tend to use natural remedies like aloe, and tea tree oil and honey etc simultaneously, or alternate between one and the other because I'd be very surprised if they interacted in a bad way.

Are you interested in what wound clinics do for such problems? I've been there and done that and it was some of the most valuable info I ever got.....and it works! If you want things to heal that are hard to heal, this is what they train you to do.....this is what they use and this is how and why it works.........

PolyMem Dressing are made by Ferris in several different forms but for most uses the "Pink" will be fine. They make a colloidal silver dressing and it works like a champ but it costs a minor fortune. Go the your pharmacy and get two products:

1) PolyMem pad (pink will work fine) measures about 3x5--Made by Ferris
2) Tegaderm Dressings 6x7 cm(a bit over 2x2 inches)----Ref#9505W--You will need a couple of these.

The pads are not cheap but you only need one. You can cut it to the proper size and then reseal the rest for future use. It may take doing this twice to fully heal but it works and is most prescribed by wound clinics in hospitals.

Cut the pad to the right size and save the rest. CLEAN the area with saline solution (IT DOES NOT STING)..Use no medication of any sort, just clean and dry the area. Place the pad over the wound and cover with the Tegaderm bandage. Done neatly, they are quite tight and waterproof, completely clear except for a label area where you can write the date. Now you do nothing except to keep it on for about 4-5 days then remove it for a look. DO NOT CHANGE THE DRESSING DAILY or even every 2 or 3 days. Read the info below to see how polymems work. Rebandage as you did before if needed and check again in 4-5 days.

Now if you don't believe me, feel free to call a hospital or a wound clinic and ask them. They all know and use these products daily but it is about the best kept secret I can think of when it comes to the general population. Once you experience the amazingly fast healing of even the most difficult wounds, you'll keep the things around just for the little stuff too.

READ ABOUT POLYMEM HERE

Put the honey on a biscuit, wash yourself down with the tea tree oil and have an aloe rubdown, then go to the pharmacy and get some polymem and tegaderm...........

Far be it from me to push a proven medical approach because you never know ......... The other stuff might work......... Plus there might be other fun side effects........

I have quite often used manuka honey on infected wounds that don't respond to povidone iodine (Betadine). Usually it works very well - there is some extra antibacterial ingredient other kinds of honey don't have. Whan it doesn't, the next step is oral antibiotics.

Marion here had a nasty dose of oozing cellulitis a few months ago and it took three successive different types of antibiotic to deal with it - together with gel dressings like the ones Spaw described (though with the amount of ooze, they needed changing twice a day).

Manuka honey works very well on genital herpes.

Urine, unless you have a UTI, is also bacteriostatic, which is why soldiers have been known to urinate on the wounds of a friend. [Just a friendly, caring thing, y'know.]

Check into myrhh with someone who knows about natural healing. Was used for mouth infections for a long time. I do not know enough to say anything more. I think you can get toothpaste made of it..likewise tea tree oil..check it out. mg

No, honey is antibacterial. Articles in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine and in Medscape are just two of those on the 'net.

"He just smelled so damn good, I lost control"

AP NEWSWIRE: A local man known for old folksongs and terrible jokes was allegedly raped in the neck by an unnamed ENT who had been treating him. For his part the victim could only respond, "eehhhhh...yea......"

His wife could not be reached for comment.

Kendall -

I'm glad you are taking the advice of the honey mongers. I used it for bedsores when my Mom had them. The nurses and I had a contest with my Mom as the lab rat (cooperative soul that she was). I used a honey/iodine combination on my side and they went with the conventional "goop" on theirs. My side healed within a couple of days, theirs did not. My mother was a diabetic with a whole lot of other problems but once we figured out this concoction, she didn't get bed sores anymore.

I'm also glad that your doctor didn't just gasp in horror and insist you go with something pharmaceutical. You're lucky.

Hope you are on the mend.

Peace,
Joyce Katzberg

What's the problem with an invasive procedure? I've had lots of invasive procedures. If the "I-P" is my best chance to fix something, I'm all for it. If I were in your shoes, I'd be discouraged as all hell based on what's happened so far. But if they told me my best chance to fix the problem, even partially, was by pouring hot lead up my ass, then I'd be greasing up a funnel!

So sit back, ride the elephant, and hope for the best. If this works....GREAT! If not, you made the best decision based on good information......Move on. Worry and kvetching about it is just counter productive.

And remember that, in a way, ____________ (supply your own euphemism for fucking) is an invasive procedure unless the guy has a really tiny dick...........

One big party after another.

My 'invasives' have included knees and sinuses/nose.
Technically, I don't think they're truly invasive until the doctors are fondling things that you usually keep in a dark, damp place AND (just to make sure vaginal or proctological exams aren't included), if shot, seriously damaged or eaten, are likely go cause death.

Catspay, that language thing was very sensitive if you.

Kendall, positive procedures to you.

We're at the hotel, had a good meal and a couple of glasses of wine, so Kendall is nicely relaxed.

A whole afternoon of testing in a very busy hospital. Kendall was feeling the strain but kept the medical staff laughing.

He has to be at the hospital at 8am for his operation at 10.15am. We're about a two minute walk from the hospital, so no problem there. He's kicking against having to stay in Boston tomorrow night but I'm happier that they want us to do that, just in case of problems.

The hotel is comfortable, the restaurant served up a first class meal with excellent staff, so we think we'll be using this hotel for further visits, which will happen.
