Tech: Outlook from old laptop to new laptop?

I have a new laptop... YAY!

All my emails and contacts are on the old laptop... BOO!

There are loads of emails from family and friends and about personal/work stuff, pension and the like.

I cannot have both laptops on the network at the same time because for some reason BT router won't connect wirelessly any more.

I tried export to CD but the limited version of Outlook will not convert to different software application (comma separated values Windows).

I copied the entire thing as *.pst and put on stick, but don't know how to get the data from it into the Outlook on new laptop. I don't want to overwrite the Outlook on new laptop because it now has important emails (work) in it.

Arrghhh!

Help?

I'm no expert, but it should be possible to make a new folder, and call it Outlook2. Then download the copy from your memory stick to this folder. It might then be possible to ask your 'new' copy of Outlook to import address or other data from your Outlook2 folder.

hi virginia

I had the same problem and after much digging I managed it.

As far as I remember this is what to do.

In Outlook, on the File menu, click Import and Export.
Click Export to a file, and then click Next.
Click Comma Separated Values (Windows), and then click Next.
In the folder list, click the Contacts folder, and then click Next.
Browse to the folder where you want to save the contacts as a .csv file.
Type a name for the exported file, and then click OK.
Click Next.
Click Finish.
That gives you a comma separate list of your Outlook Contacts. Transfer that to your new computer, then you can import them into your new version of Outlook with the following steps:
On the File menu, click Import and Export.
Click Import from another program or file, and then click Next.
In the list, click Comma Separated Values (Windows), and then click Next.
Click Browse, locate your file, and then click Next.
Click your Contacts folder or another folder that contains contacts, and then click Next.
In the list, click the file that contains your address list, and then click Map Custom Fields.

That should get you going. If you need more help here are two reference pages from Microsoft, one on Exporting Outlook Contacts and another on Importing Outlook Contacts.>

I didn't need to transfer any actual mail as I usually file the ones I think I might need onto my hard drive.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Mike

Oh my... I just did it.. I put all the new contacts and emails into new folders (Inbox 2 and contacts 2) and did a straight import from the stick. This transferred everything in original inbox and contacts to new inbox and contacts

It is all there.

I am happy bunny!

Now sign up for skype, you can do online video and voice conferencing with friends and family anywhere, free. All new laptops have a built in webcam

very cool

I watched my girls in Denver open their Christmas gifts just like I was sitting in the room with them, they could see me I could see them ... and talk with each other like we were in the same place. Skype is great all free

Skype is good.

Another approach for future computer changes is to simply dismount the hard drive from your old laptop, install it into an external hard drive casing and hook up as an external drive. This allows you not to use up space on your new computer and to save the effort of wiping out data on the old computer. All you have to do is put a new drive in the old computer and it is ready for passing along.

Let the new owner put her own software on it. In these days of identity theft, security is important.

PS, If you do not want the old unit, I rehab and send old laptops to people who need them. PM me.

What a brilliant idea, Ebarnacle. We have decided to keep the old Dell as a back up, but would be good to get the old hard drive out and a new one in. Maybe keep it in the caravan as it will have nothing of real value on it.

Woot.... I love this place.
