Thanks, Dan:

We were so much younger then. We did this concert at Hog Eye Music near Chicago. Hog Eye music was/is (don't know if it's still there) small music store and the place was crammed to overflowing with people standing in the open doorway to the street. The concert started around eight in the evening and we didn't take a break, just alternating songs. Finally, someone said, "Hey, what time is it?" and we looked at our watches. It was almost eleven o'clock, and I don't think a single person had left.

Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end. And in a way, they never have.

Jerry

Gee, that Art Thieme is getting a lot of attention lately. Yesterday, he was described as having a "sexy earthiness," and today he's on television. He's starting to make the rest of us guys a bit jealous.

But hey, it really is great to see Art and Jerry on video, sexy earthiness and all.

Dang it, that was after life took me away from Chicago, or I would have been there. I lived in the north edge of Chicago when Anne Hills and Jan Burda owned Hogeye; my boss owned their store. I learned of Bill Staines and Peter Madcat Ruth from their concerts there. Some of the best itty-bitty concerts in the world. I got to see Art, and Anne and Jan, mainly at the No Exit. (I was living a block and a half away). We get to see Anne near home here at least every year or so; She's scheduled 20 minutes away, in Flint, in March.

Jerry, I had a car like that! An English Ford Cortina. I drove it all the way from Colorado to California and back that way. If I got in a real pickle, I could lift up the carpet between the seats, take the plate cover off the trannie, stick a long-handled screwdriver in the gears and pop it into reverse, so no pig pens were necessary.:-)

These are so wonderful. You are both so handsome, I'm surprised the women aren't swooning.:-)

Dude,
Thanks for putting this up there. It's quite nice to see!

That was a fun night. Those several hours seemed like only 5 minutes. It's what Einstein meant by his theory of relativity I'm thinking.

Having only dial-up, it takes me forever to download a segment. But I do have the whole concert on a DVD that Jerry sent to me.

Say, what year was that? I mentioned on this video how my hands were going numb -- so it must be in the 1980s. And I kept rubbing my hands on my pants leg. So it was before I had 10 years of spinal/neck surgeries for the same symptoms that were finally diagnosed as MS in '97.

But Mudcat has given me some extra presence in the folk scene, and for that, Max and everyone, I'm truly appreciative!!!

Love to you all; and I mean that!

Yeah, it is great fun to watch, Art. I think we could easily have played another couple of hours and not even realized it. As it was, I remember that we couldn't believe how much time had passed. Our nights together at the Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin were wonderful, but there never was and never will be another night like the one at Hog Eye. And yes, I remember that you were having a lot of trouble with your hands and didn't know what the cause was back then.

Great times.

Well Art, it is all deserved, after 50+ years of performing all of you fine people getting some recondition from the outside world is a wonderful thing I think.

The problem with being in the fine arts, like music or photography or painting,   when one retires, they don't even get a gold watch or a cake. Well when you and Jerry warm the hearts of good people who still enjoy a performance 21 years ago, that is better than a watch.

And when Jerry gets the praises he has been getting for his book and music, that is better than a watch

And when you , Captain, Jacqui and Dan get that Grammy, Now that is the icing on the cake.

Dan

oldude,
I just watched the whole DVD trying to see what guitar I was playing. I do think that is the same D-76 bicentennial Martin that I won in a raffle at the Old Town School Of Folk Music in Chicago. So it cost me 3 dollars!! ($3.00)

Years later, around 1996, I was putting the gig bag with that guitar inside into the trunk of my car and I slammed the trunk lid on it. Getting home, I opened it up and found it looking like matchsticks. Superb guitar builder and repairman extraordinaire, JAN BURDA, in Michigan, put it back together beautifully. Our son, Chris, has it now!

Jan Burda, along with his then wife, Anne Hills, owned the music store where this concert took place--Hogeye Music in Evanston, Illinois.

Anne and Jan sold the store to great singer and picker, JIM CRAIG---who Larry Rand called probably the best singing voice ever to come out of the Chicago Folk Revival scene. Jim operates the fine store there on Central Street even as we speak. He is a prince of a guy.

Oh, Sorry, I digress!!

That is the nine-string guitar. But because my hands were going numb from MS, I had already gone back to six strings to make playing it easier. The last gig I did was at Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson , Wisconsin---June 6th, 1997. ---- There was a real chance I'd not be able to do that gig---so Jerry Rasmussen was there to take over--just in case.

Dan, do you think you could number the titles of these videos somehow so we can watch them in order if we want?
At the end of Art's "Diamond Joe," Jerry says something about a Chevy, and now I want to hear the rest of the Chevy story - where is it?

Art
your modifications to that guitar was wonderful. I can't believe the sound you got out of that. It is like a 12 string on steriods - much richer on the bass I think. What a great idea ... and what courage it took to self modify a Martin like that. Sure glad you did, that was really cool

That D-76 Martin was back to being a 6-string guitar when we did that concert in 1989! I thought I'd said that!??
