Singing with Kytrad-Jean Ritchie in nursing home

11 Jan 10 - 10:04 AM (#2809037)
Subject: Singing 'with' Kytrad (Jean Ritchie in n
From: wysiwyg

I'm taking the liberty of starting a new thread for the telling (and well-wishing) of Jean's stay in a nursing home. I do this because:

1. I spend enough time in those places to know how music can and sometimes does fill them to overflowing;
2. I have some idea how busy the Pickows and other family/friends are at this time;
3. I want to honor the Pickows' request to sing in the New Year for (with) Jean.

So-- Mudcatters, what song do you wish you could sing in Jean's room (or nearby)?

Pickow's and friends-in-person who visit Jean, what can you tell us of Jean's stay? Does the staff have any idea "Who" they are hosting, and how are they treating y'all? I'm sure there have been many personal moments with one another you will not wish to share here, but please know that Mudcatters (posting or not) continue to think about and pray for you all, with warm gratitude for Jean's presence in our midst.

Still praying and looking to the blessings,

~Susan

Come all you Fair and Tender Maidens. First song I ever heard Jean sing, and I can still remember the shattering impact it had on me.

Thanks, Fred.

I hope a clone will complete the thread title that did not fit:

Her own beautiful 'Early Fields,' which she recommended I sing at my son's baptism.

Great idea, Susan!

And the thread title "Sing w Kytrad - Jean in nursing home" fits (in case a Clone wants to change it).

Mine is a Kathy Mattea version of "Christ Child Lullabye," which arrived in today's mail via a discovery in the threads this month. When I sing it as an offertory, I'll be thinking of Jean's dulcimer playing it, too. While I'm at it I'll add a memory of Rick Fielding via a mentally-heard slide-guitar-harmony part, and our friend Olddude will be my fantasy duet-ist singing.... oh wait! He lives nearby enough to actually come over and do it with us! :~)

Wish Jean did, too.

Old Shoe Boots always gets a grin out of me. I have it on a 10 inch LP she recorded for Folkways. She was playing in Denver years back and I took it to her to sign and she asked, "is that mine"? That tells you something of her contribution to music. Too many records to recall. May you keep singing Jean,

Would appreciate clonal help to add a link to the older thread at the first post to this one.

BTW I believe Woodsongs Oldtime Radio Hour has an archived video/MP3 concert of Jean, in case anyone wants to see her while they sing with her. :~) Millenium Stage at Kennedy Center, probably, as well. Sorry I have no links at the moment-- Google will find them.

Thanks,

~Susan

Uh Oh! I guess I'll sing my latest song for her. She might need a laugh after all this lovey dovey stuff (not that we don't love her).

Here 'tiz...

There's a fearsome Phallic finial on the fencepost in our yard
we bought it at Home Depot and it's plastic and it's hard
It stands there like a soldier or a sentry on his guard
that fearsome phallic fencepost in the yard.

I don't know why we bought it, it doesn't make much sense
you can see that it's symbolic or you're really rather dense
and it gives a whole new meaning to 'Sitting on the fence'
that fearsome phallic fencepost in the yard.

You may wonder what the neighbors think as they are passin by
there's many a dear old lady gets a twinkle in her eye
and for sheer and utter envy it can make a grown man cry
that fearsome phallic fencepost in the yard

Every night the neighbors' cats upon their garden wall
insist on entertaining with a dreadful caterwaul
I think that they're complaining that they can't sit at all
on that fearsome phallic fencepost in the yard

There's a fearsome Phallic finial on the fencepost in our yard
we bought it at Home Depot and it's plastic and it's hard
It stands there like a soldier or a sentry on his guard
that fearsome phallic fencepost in the yard.

Thanks, Bert, for a bit of much-needed levity!

However, with the news about Jean and Ray Fisher, and a few bad ones of my own Ewan MacColl's "Joy of Living" has been going through my mind recently.

Jean, I'll be carrying my little reminder booklet of spirituals in the next few days' travel, and using/improvising from them in meetings I'll be attending, at which prayers for your recovery will be welcome and enthusiastically joined.

If I could come in to Jean's room and sing quietly into her ear, I would sing her the Padstow May song -

Unite and unite and let us all unite
For summer is acome unto day
And whither we are going we will all unite
In the merry morning of May.

Arise up Miss Ritchie, all in your gown of green
For summer is acome unto day
You are as fine a lady as waits upon the Queen
In the merry morning of May.

Not positive of the title, but the one with the "walkin' with my darlin on a May Day day..." Such a cheerful song and I would surely like to hear Jean sounding cheerful...

I'd sing this. She is that minstrel specially when it comes to the last verse.

Minstrel      Graham & Eileen Pratt

I sang my song at Hasting's Battle
To praise the deeds of Charlemagne
I sang of Arthur and of Roland
That man remember their great fame
I sang to rouse a sinking nation
That king and man might never yield
But when the battle cry was over
We all lay dead on Hasting's field

I sang my song to conquer loved ones
I sold my voice to him who paid
To sing his lady gentle love songs
And lend his passion subtle shade
And when my silver throated praises
At last did melt her heart of stone
He paid me and they both departed
And left me there to sing alone

I sang my song at fair and market
A song much bawdier than before
Amid the pigs and the geese and the cattle
I sought to please the crown once more
I sang to win applause and favour
Songs of the cuckold and the whore
And though I gladly took there money
I missed the songs I'd sung before

I sang my song in times of anger
And found new purpose in my rhyme
At kings and queens I'd point the finger
And bid them see the nation's crimes
How bitterly did I condemn them
All those the left the poor oppressed
But the time was not yet ripe for changes
We hung at Tyburne with the rest

I sang my song in mill and pulpit
Me voice all cracked with dust and fume
I took me tune from the factory siren
And I took me rhythm from the loom
And whether anybody listened
Or paid attention I can't say
But I couldn't stand the smoke in the chimney
So I packed me bags and moved away

My eyes are tired my voice grows weary
My aging memory nearly gone
I've sung my song for lord and lady
I've sung it too for common man
Until there's no more time for singing
Until we reach the story's end
I'll always find the strength within
To rise and sing my song again
