Is there any ABC/Midi software that runs on Linnux/Umbutu around?

Cheers

Pete

"Linux Ubuntu"

spell it that way and Google shows you pages like this

(Ubuntu is just one configuration of Linux....any Linux program should run on it.)

Pete - I've run several under my virtual Ubuntu/Kubuntu systems. Have a look at the abcplus page at sourceforge, where you'll find copied of abcm2ps and abcmidi for various systems.

For a wider selection, have a look at the list of software at Chris Walshaw's abcnotation - software page, though you'll have to follow the links to check which are available for Linux.

Any text editor (vim does syntax highlighting for ABC, so do most of the basic editors like kedit and gedit)

abcm2ps to convert abc to postscript

gv (ghostview) to view and print

gs (ghostscript) invoked with suitable runes to convert PS to graphics (I usually make a mono PNG at 300dpi) which can then be cropped (GIMP or lesser graphics editor) and imported into Open Office WP documents if you want your tunes mixed with text and other material.

ps2pdf when you want to email sheet music to someone (the PDF file is amazingly small, much smaller than a graphic, and everybody's got a PDF viewer)

abcmidi package - I use it mostly for the abc2abc utility which can transpose but abc2midi is the main program which converts ABC to MIDI (duh) if you need that.

Guido Gonzato's book (download as PDF, print double sided, bind and cherish) for documentation of ABC Plus which is compatible with abcm2ps.

I have written a number of scripts to invoke the above programs with standard parameters, and the whole result is a breeze to use. I use them on the (Debian, ssh) command line. Mary uses them on the Gnome desktop on her Ubuntu system.

Google for the book; you'll find the others in your package repository.
