There have been a number of threads about the use of the piano in folk music. Here is jazz great Keith Jarrett's take on Shenadoah.

That's very nice. I like the way that - for a jazzer - he doesn't stray very far from the melody.

Beautiful, but I wouldn't consider it to be jazz, at all. It reminds me of my brother's songs which he has produced on piano...more classical than jazz. Still, very nice. Thanks!

Lovely. Thanks for posting.

When I clicked, I also saw a version of Shenandoah with James Galway playing flute. The photos there really bring home why the part of that region is called The Ridge and Valley.

Here's another interesting take on Shenandoah by Philip Aaberg.

Jarrett has done several projects recording classical works entirely "straight"--I think I have a recording of him playing Bach's "Goldberg Variations"--, so his remaining faithful to the melody shouldn't be surprising.

Didn't Jacqueline Schwab record a piano version of "Shenandoah" for various Ken Burns documentaries? Her arrangements are always top-drawer stuff, wonderfully expressive. Sadly, I don't think her version appears on any of the soundtrack albums. See her web site for more recordings of her wonderful playing: www.jacquelineschwab.com/
