I know Susan Boyle is well over 28 and it wasn't American Idol, but I really don't think they have an age limit. I've older people in some of their tryouts. I think Larry was pretty funny and agile. Well, I guess I was wrong. This from Wiki: The eligible age-range for contestants is currently 16–28 years old. Question: why did they let Larry tryout when he obviously wasn't 28? |

Well, I can only guess that there is some kind of pre-audition, and they probably told him that he was too old but they would like him to appear anyway, just for the entertainment value of his performance. And the first thing I thought, kat, was that if that had been the age limit in Britain, Susan Boyle would be unknown today. The real tragedy, though, if anyone saw the entire show, was the young girl, I think about the 4th or 5th to audition, who was so eager and so confident, and they told her she was terrible, and she was absolutely crushed, my wife was in tears along with her. |

I lost interest in those early auditions after the first 2 or 3 years because each new season of ridiculous contestants started to look and sound like all the others. But once the semifinalists are chosen, the gong show aspect is over (unless you consider Simon Cowell the one you'd like to gong). When American Idol started the age cutoff was 25 y o (as of your audition date). By season 4 they had raised it to 30. It's a bit arbitrary, but they say they're looking for "pop stars" (which can include country, r&b, and rock) and they're obviously trying to hook the young generation. They have enough apples-to-oranges comparisons among contestants as it is, without comparing 16-year-olds with 50-year-olds. But, hey, it's just a TV show, so who they can make up their own rules. Early on, the contestants couldn't sing original material, play instruments, do duets, or have a live band backup. They switched to live backups by Season 3 or 4, allowed instrument-playing in Season 6, added some duets in Season 7 or 8, and maybe now they're even allowing some performance of original songs. Whatever. I just tuned in to this year's auditions for about 15 min and happened to catch the "Pants On The Ground" guy - who the obviously let slip in despite being decades over-age, just for the entertainment of the TV audience - and enjoyed his song and persona. He may yet get a record deal from someone. William Hung did and his CD sold hundreds of thousands of copies. |

I did catch a clip of a girl from the south who sang Wagon Wheel (bob dylan's song later expanded by Old Crow medicine wheel) and they gave her nothing but praise ... and a ticket to hollywood....i wish her luck. Vanessa Wolfe....another talent she has is jumping off of bridges (if that can be called a talent?) |
