Lyr ADD: Time to Go (Larry Penn)

Help!

There's a guy here (Vancouver) singing a song called "Time to Go" or maybe "It's Time to Go". I had the impression that it was a Utah Phillips song, and there is a song with that name on the CD The Rose Tattoo, which I don't have. The chorus of the song is something like:

So come on you old railroad bum, it's time to go,
It's time to go, it's time to go
You railroad bum, get up and go
Rattlin' back to where your soul is free...

Does anyone know this song? Is that the one on The Rose Tattoo? If not, where can I find it?

It's by Larry Penn, aka Cream City Slim. Larry is a retired truck driver in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He writes great songs. Here's a link to his website;

Larry Penn is an exceptional songwriter and "Time To Go" makes for a wonderful sing along.

And just an fyi. Many of us are attempting to pick up the reins of Utah's legacy, but the true heir to that legacy is Mark Ross. If you have any questions, or really want to understand Utah and his work, Mark is your man. I hope to sit and sing with him one day before I depart this mortal coil.

All the best,

Mick

So weird. Just listening to Trains, Tramps and Traditions. The last cut is Time To Go. Mark's Jay Gould's Daughter is brilliant. A live performance where everyone feeds off everyone else and a good time is had by all.

Thanks a million, you guys are great. I will order the Pabst double CD from Larry Penn and go on from there - and special thanks to Mark Ross!
I'll be checking back with you since Mick says you are the man.

Thanks again!

Mark, is Cream City Slim (Larry Penn) part of Rose Tattoo?

Milwaukee is called Cream City because many of its houses are built of a cream-colored brick that was made in the area.

I met Mark last year when he performed at a Rose Tattoo concert in Nevada City, California; but we had talked on the phone many times before. It was a pleasure, Mark.

Joe,

It was my pleasure. Yes, Larry is one of the Tattoos. He's getting old and hasn't come to the last couple of Rendezvous.

As it shows on this page from Larry Penn's web site, Larry Penn sings TIME TO GO on a 2-CD album he made with Utah Phillips called "May Day at the Pabst," recorded live at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 1, 2006. cdbaby.com has a sample:

...time that whistle moans, it says to me:
"I'll take you back to where your soul is free."
There's something about the way that lady sings tonight.
Her raucous melody warms up the hobo night,
And I have not felt this way since I was....

"The Rose Tattoo 'Live': Trains, Tramps, & Traditions" is an album by Utah Phillips, Mark Ross, Bob & Diana Suckiel, Kuddie, Bruce Brackney, and Larry Penn. It also contains what I think is the same recording of TIME TO GO by Larry Penn, but the sample only included part of the spoken introduction.

Larry Penn's album "The Whiskey's Gone" contains a song called IT'S TIME TO GO which I assume is the same song, but I couldn't find a sample to confirm this.

The guy in Vancouver singing "Time to Go" is Barry Truter, member of Fraser Union (we shared the stage with Utah Phillips at Vancouver Folk Festival 2007). Barry has a new cd called "Traveller" which includes "Time to Go".

IN answer to the Lyrics request...here you go:
How can this get added to the database?

TIME TO GO by Larry Penn

Whistle on the midnight train sounds sweet tonight.
It’s calling me the way an old-time lover might
And every time the whistle moans it says to me:
I’ll take you back to where your soul is free.

Something about the way the lady sings tonight
Her raucous melody warms up the hobo’s night
And I have not felt this way since I was 17
Once upon a time when steam was king.

CHORUS: Come all your worn-out railroad bums
It’s time to go, it’s time to go, it’s time to go
Come all you worn-out railroad bums, get up in a row
A-travelin' back to where your soul is free

Somewhere in the murky night that whistle wails
I swear it’s callin’ me come on and ride the rails
It’s tellin’ me to leave my callused things behind
It’s tellin’ me it’ll take me back in time. CHORUS

One by one my friends have caught that westbound ride
They’re waiting by the river for me to come
No, you don’t have to worry what’s become of me
I’m travelin’ back to where my soul is free. CHORUS

We’re travelin' back to where our souls are free
