25 Jan 10 - 04:49 PM (#2821357) Subject: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: broadstairs-jen Thought I'd start this thread since I'm doing the (unofficial) Sweeps MySpace and Facebook sites. 25 Jan 10 - 07:09 PM (#2821465) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Richard Bridge A thumbnail sketch of the booked artists would be handy. It was once a feature of the programme, but vanished many ears ago. In the absence of a good reason to be elsewhere (and I am no longer playing for BG) I will very probably be in the GI all weekend (hic). |
26 Jan 10 - 10:29 AM (#2821690) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: broadstairs-jen richard, are you looking for short bios on the booked artists? jen |
26 Jan 10 - 11:30 AM (#2821737) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Richard Bridge Yes. They used to go into the programme 10 years ago but recently they haven't. It helps to decide if I want to go to see a guest. If they play bluegrass or snigger snogwriter I probably won't bother. If it says walls of harmony inspired by the Young Tradition woven into traditional song I'll probably be in the front row. And since guests are often on at the same time as each other it helps prioritise. |
26 Jan 10 - 01:35 PM (#2821829) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: broadstairs-jen ok, will see what i can find (in between the day job), but...start with this one: JUMBO GUMBO: walls of harmony inspired by the Young Tradition woven into traditional song :) Jen |

26 Jan 10 - 06:33 PM (#2822124) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Richard Bridge Actually, Kevin the Shirt Murderer does lead some traditional English songs, although the odd verse or two from Quadrophenia slips in. And Ruff -n- Reddy have been heard to sing different notes from each other, sometimes in the same scale. I think you'll find Jumbo Gumbo feature walls of nasal corrupt French sung traditionally a fraction sharp - unless that's the exceptionally wide tuning on a cajun accordion confusing me (as Jon Loomes used to say "Give me an A. No, only one") |

28 Jan 10 - 04:22 PM (#2823857) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: broadstairs-jen I have made a start at putting the band bios on myspace. This info is gathered from the musician's own web-sites so may or may not be the type of information that you are looking for, but should give an idea of what they are about. I have emailed the bands that still need info and will update myspace with the info as i get it. There are also links to their web-sites which often provide more info/photos/videos/music clips. Please note that the myspace/facebook/mudcat info is unofficial and is not anything to do with Medway Council. Hope this helps Jen |

13 Mar 10 - 07:00 AM (#2863277) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: broadstairs-jen Here is the official but draft program... Rochester Sweeps Festival 2010 The History Imagine a world 400 years ago where children were used as chimney sweeps. There was little pay, it was a dirty trade and there was little reward for the men who did the job and even less for children. Medway's annual Sweeps Festival recreates the joy and laughter enjoyed by the chimney sweeps at their traditional holiday. It was the one time of year that the sweeps could leave the soot behind and have some fun. The Sweeps holiday was traditionally held on 1 May. Locally, they used to mark the occasion by staging a procession through the streets of Rochester. Their fun continued with the Jack-in-the-Green ceremony. Jack was a seven-foot character who they used to awaken at dawn on Bluebell Hill, Chatham. Jack-in-the-Green would walk with the chimney sweeps in their parade. In 1868 the Climbing Boys' Act made it illegal to employ young boys to carry out the trade, so the traditional procession gradually began to fade. The final May celebration was held in the early 1900s. Local businessman Gordon Newton, a keen historian, revived the festival in 1981. He decided it was time to bring it back and over the years he has helped develop the festival into what it is today – an extravaganza of traditional Britain. Gordon researched the sweeps tradition and organised a parade, involving local Morris teams. Today he is festival producer and plays melodeon for several Morris teams. Meanwhile Doug Hudson is the festival's music director, a role he has held for many years. Doug is well known on the local and national folk scene. He was involved in a folk club at Medway Little Theatre in the 1970's and now arranges a programme for Medway Folk Cellar and Folk at the Brook, two local clubs. He is also lead singer with the Hot Rats. Through Gordon's vision and hard work, Doug's musical ability and Medway Council's assistance with organisation, Rochester's Sweeps Festival is in its 30th year and is the largest May Day celebration of its kind in the country. If somebody is a nationalist and wants to attend the sweeps, as far as I am concerned they have the right to do so, as long as they are not using the event to spread racial hatred or canvas / recruit for their preferred political party. The control freaks who want to conduct witch hunts are the real nazis here! |

I mean for christ sakes any one think these Nazi ,s were coming up the Medway on the fucking Bismarck? the way folk carry on and if they did we would send the buggers packing like we did last time. Im more concerned about youth behavior in the town spoiling events. Tolerance in politics. I agree with Tomcat somewhat |
03 Apr 10 - 08:16 AM (#2878680) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Pierre Le Chapeau I think the Medway police took a back seat last year in regards to the horde of drink fueled louts that were causing upset and braying at ordinary folk going about there day out. Blocking the high street so no one could get past. They even had there pit-bulls sizing each other up being held back inches apart by there moronic owners? A mother with child in tow was knocked over by a band of drunken teenagers who took not the slightest bit of notice of the child streaked with tears and when I went to the aid of this poor young mum I was called a Wanker by some boss-eyed Monkey brained half-wit . careless I say to the BMP lets focus on what actually happens at around 4oclock in Rochester High street. My sister and her Kids are not returning this year not because of one or two political insignificant's but due to the above. Saturday and Sunday were great. Monday was the put off and these aint local lads these are idiots who has usual travel in from other area,s Kind regards to all Pierre. |
03 Apr 10 - 09:08 AM (#2878693) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Richard Bridge There are measures in place this year to restrict drinking in the streets after a certain time and generally to promote order. I wonder what the grunts' favourite political party is? |
04 Apr 10 - 12:00 AM (#2879188) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: GUEST,Errol Fling I doubt if the w****rs that I saw grunting in the High Street last year, with their "weapon dogs" in tow, even know what the word politics means or would be able to spell X in a polling booth! And I for one wouldn't waste time "wondering" but get onto the organisers/police and sort out some proper protection for the ordinary folk who want to enjoy the otherwise great festival. |

04 Apr 10 - 01:45 PM (#2879458) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Pierre Le Chapeau I agree Errol flung, but last year the police presence was a thin blue line Saturday and Sunday which is good. I was stopped by two W.P.C,S who enquired of me the contents of my Tankard. late afternoon on the Sunday I quote" Excuse me Sir 'Is that beer in that Mug. Beer it is not I said with a wide gesture of the arm. Its Mead. I,ll drink it up forth with I said. Yes Please do . Which I did. So the police were clamping down late Sunday on people drinking openly in the town. I was also stopped on the way back to my B&B has routine by a patrol car but I explained where I been that I was ok and heading back to bed whereby they took me upon me word and went on there way. So the Medway Police are about. I understand though the event is policed by cost so the presence is rather a thin police presence clearly by what we witnessed on he Monday . regards Pierre. |

An open mic should be just that , the guests have other performance opportunities! Even the advertised Friday session in the Gordon was replaced by a band gig. The Jolly Knight session was replaced with karaoke. As to the unfortunate events at The Gordon on Saturday night. The incident may have been avoided if a grip had been kept on the performance time in the beer tent! The band were excessively loud, and would not stop. "People" were drifting into the hotel after hours, attracted by the racket, and ruining Heretique's attempt at a late nighrt session. It culminated in the hospitalisation of the hotel proprietor ! I am raising these points with Doug who will be emailed a copy of this posting. Sue T.D.L. |
04 May 10 - 08:39 AM (#2899726) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Richard Bridge Ah, the Jolly Knight has been thus ever since it was sold off separately from the King's Head. First I heard of the events of the Sat night. What a bummer. I trust the miscreants (if identified) will not only be prosecuted but also permanently barred from all pubs in Rochester. The band should be named and shamed: the booked bands were Moveable Feast and Calico Street Riots. |
04 May 10 - 09:25 AM (#2899746) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Pierre Le Chapeau Re above "What a Palaver" I put it too you all last years Bank holiday was over shadowed by thuggish behavior from the younger generation. I noticed it was not so bad this year. I noted a higher Police presence and not so many falling over drunk youngsters drinking openly on the high street. There again we also didnt have to contend with that bloody night club thumping out rave music. Its a sorry state of affairs when performers cause riots and has a result a man is put in hospital. I must ask I quote Girl Friday " they were excessively loud and they would not stop playing. I wonder why the plug was not pulled on this band? the moment they started acting up. |
04 May 10 - 09:50 AM (#2899760) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Richard Bridge As I read it the thumpers were not the band, but late night revellers attracted by the racket. I would however shoot the operators of the "night club" blasting hip-hop out of speakers on the High Street near Star Hill all day. |
04 May 10 - 11:57 AM (#2899838) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: broadstairs-jen if you read the sweeps program about calico street riots..."a young festival band that aims to leave an indelible impression!" the situation happened after the gig in the backroom. please do not inadvertantly link this to moveable feast...they played at my venue many and were lovely people. |
04 May 10 - 03:21 PM (#2899992) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: melodeonboy "at the campsite i was presented with a small white metal thingie with holes in" I believe that's a component from the Z-booster drive of a Martian spaceship. The Martians, being clever little creatures, have since developed the far superior XX-booster drive. I fear that your thingie may already be obsolete, unless someone wants it for spares for an older model. |

04 May 10 - 05:05 PM (#2900047) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: GUEST I wouldn't think for one moment that Moveable Feast were to blame. They were supposedly the support act. Calico Street Riots says it all, I thought from the material that they were The Singing Loins. Let me explain some more. As usual, I was the only person to loudly comment on the fact that someone should shut up the w*****s" in the marquee as they were clearly going on too long. It did seem that they had stopped at about 11.15, but then they started again. I suggested that someone pull out their plug, and was prepared to do so, were it not for the unsavoury people who were arriving. The incident happened in the lounge bar. The landlord's son refused to serve one of them. The refusee then telephoned some friends, who turned up . Then a fight ensued. The police stopped all the music, and closed the bar. I wasn't aware why until breakfast time. |

04 May 10 - 05:50 PM (#2900094) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Girl Friday I have just got a lengthy reply, and a very detailed one from Doug. Some of his points are valid, but I will be contacting him again. Apparently the Gordon had asked for a late music licence which was granted, and the concert, headlining Moveable Feast was due to finish at 12.30. This change was too late to go in the programme. The incident was unrelated to the festival and it's clientel. Whoever the band was were excessively loud, and did not take into account the acoustic session with Heretic. I doubt we shall stay at The Gordon next year. Tam, can you p.m. me with details of your B and B please. Sue |
04 May 10 - 06:41 PM (#2900128) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Bounty Hound Sorry to hear people had bad experiences at the Sweeps. We had a great time, two cracking gigs in Expectations and the Eagle Tavern, although playing mainly (I suspect) to locals and other visitors rather than 'folkies' who had come specifically for the festival. We played at both venues to a full house, sold lots of CDs and were delighted with the number of people who remembered us from last year and looked us out again. My impression is that the sort of unfortunate incident described above could have happened on any Saturday night in Rochester and is no reflection on anyone involved in the organisation of the festival. Before complaining too much, please remember that first and foremost, the Sweeps is a Morris festival with concerts and such like as an added bonus, and, in that respect, very different to a folk festival with a paying audience come specifically for the music. One other thing to bear in mind is that events were juggled around a bit because of the extreem weather conditions, which may be the reason for the problem in the acoustic tent, they may have been booked performers who were scheduled to be outside. As far as I am concerned Doug and Gordon deserve a huge cheer for everything they do for the event. John |

04 May 10 - 07:14 PM (#2900148) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: Pierre Le Chapeau I walked the high street and heard no music from the night club Thank heavens. It all seems a bit of a palaver and has suggested lets not blame the wrong folk who are nice people? It will all come out in the wash. I know no more then any folk but truth will come out when the owner of the hotel comes out he aint got nowt to loose. Regards Pierre. |

05 May 10 - 10:03 AM (#2900536) Subject: RE: Sweeps Festival 2010 - Rochester, Kent From: GUEST,synbyn no cookie Had an enjoyable Sat & Sun despite the weather- and think pretty well all the trouble was caused by bunches of tanked-up local lads coming into the town with cans of supermarket lager- saw a fight at 6pm on Sat which was nothing to do with festival, it had been prearranged over mobiles. Police did well I thought. Highlights were Luke on Sun and the guitar session in the Good Intent- so many excellent players in one space! Thanks to all the organisers who had good contingency plans in place, and especially the Pigs Ear stage who coped amid deluge! Bob |
