Howdy Juan,

Variations of this song have been discussed a lot here recently. Look for duscussions of The Water Is Wide and of Waly Waly in particular. You can find both versions and other related songs in the database, but I've only heard it with water, not river.

The song The Water is Wide can be found on a Karla Bonoff CD. If you still need the lyrics let me know and I will get them for you. It's a lovely song. Goes something like The Water is Wide I can't cross over and neither have I wings to fly Give me a boat that can carry two and both shall row my love and I.

Do you mean the Irish song "Carrickfergus"? There's a lovely cersion on CD sung by Van Morrison & The Chieftains. The name of the record is "Irish Heartbeat"

I'm trying to hunt down the title/lyrics of a song that i've heard covered by everyone from Lucy Blue Tremblay to Garrison Keillor, but can't locate in the datagbase: The first verse goes something like:

The river is wide I can't cross over and neither have I wings to fly Build (or "give") me a boat that can carry two and both will row my love and I

Anyone know the rest of the song?

We've had some interesting discussions on that song, including on just recently.
Click here for the "Waly, Waly" discussion.
Here's Water Is wide
Here's Water Is Wide - alternate lyrics
Here's water is wide (note the subtle difference?
And, here's river Is Wide (not-so-good thread...
And, lastly, this and this, the Bounty versions.

There are also probably a number of versions in the database, although at first stab, I only found this one and four or five versions that turned up when I searched for waly. This song is probably good for somebody's PhD thesis. It's one of the more talked-about folk songs around.

We have an album out w/ the song on it. "Back Inside the Dream " . Go on cdbaby.com and type in c.c. porter. It's an orchestrated version with Uzca. We have an acoustic version w/ guitar only on "Earthstrings" if you would like to sing it to accompaniment. C.C.

The Radio Concert Programme here in NZ played the orchestrated version last week and it was quite enjoyable. I'm not sure if it was a Percy Granger or Vaughan Williams arrangement. But then the stupid announcer, at the end said "That was Wally Wally". I think he was a bit of a Wally!

one of the best versions of this song, in my opinion, is sung by Judy Dinning of "Real Time" and ex Bad Penny and is well worth a listen

Here's Edward Gabrielson singing The River Is Wide

It's definitely a version of "The Water Is Wide / Waly Waly", with the same tune and some of the same "floating verses" plus some other verses I'd not heard before.

A further search, and it appears Edward is singing (more or less) the Kingston Trio version, which appears in another thread here

The river is wide
I can't cross over
And neither have
I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my love and I.

Oh, love is gentle
And love is kind
The sweetest flower
When first it's new
But love grows old
And waxes cold
And fades away
Like morning dew.

There is a ship
And she sails the sea
She's loaded deep
As deep can be
But not as deep
As the love I'm in
I know not how
I sink or swim.

The water is wide
I can't cross over
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat
That can carry two
And both shall row
My love and I.

And both shall row
My love and I.
