I have all released recordings of him backing Johnny Kidd, which have shared my car music player with Steve Morse oddly enough. I only saw him live twice, once with the reformed 1962-64 Pirates, supported by The Only Ones (awful) at a London college in 1978, and at the Cricketers pub near the Oval in 1985. I wish I could have seen him with Johnny Kidd - I picked the wrong week to go to The Big Beat Club in Harrow! He will be greatly missed, one of our star guitar players. |

Booked for a Freshers gig back in 1978 he had two 100 watt Marshalls slaved together and his sound went straight out from the backline, the vocals and bass and drum went out through several thousand watts of PA just to be heard. I heard the story (which may or may not be true) that when they started out they didn't have (possibly, couldn't afford!) a lead guitarist AND a rhythm guitarist (which most bands had at that time), so Mick learned to play both at the same time! A great loss! |

30 Jan 10 - 02:32 PM (#2825716) Subject: RE: Obit:Pirates guitarist Mick Green (January 2010) From: Bonzo3legs There was a guitarist called Micky King who played in Cliff Bennett & the Rebel Rousers until they left for Hamburg, and then played for James Royal & the Hawks who had a long residency at the Big Beat Club in Harrow around 1964 - same guitar bass & drums line up and supported all the guest bands. Micky had mastered the Mick Green style and performed many JK & the Pirates songs. The bass player held his bass almost level with his chin! |
