Feeling put down...LOL.

Do any of you have a story about being the one who was on the rough end of a put down re music?
One of mine is
Nice middle aged lady at a lovely club in Yorkshire.
"Oh Hello,what do you do"
I write songs and enjoy listening to the other performers.
"Oh You're the one.Every club has one of those, lots of dire heart searching in 3/4 time"

Not mentioning the club as it is truly welcoming and friendly, I think she was a visitor too.

Don't spare the egos chaps.

Blimey! She wasn't a reporter from The Borchester Echo, was she? ;0)

It wasn't me, honestly* and if it was it was many years ago. "You'll have to stop. You're driving my customers away. You're even driving them away from the other bar"

*but it may have been a duo I was in briefly. Man, that hurt. For a long time.

Hmmm

I was stupid enough to sing a song that didn't suit my voice when there was a heckler in the bar.

"I used to like that song" he said.

This happened years ago at the Crewe & Nantwich Folk Festival:

Very Posh Nantwich Lady: Are you well known? I seem to have seen you before somewhere...

Me: Well, I have been on at the Festival before, and I've been at Middlewich Festival doing...

VPNL: No, no....wait! I've got it! You look just like one of the workmen who redecorated my drawing room!

That's never happened to me, but it did to my good friend, Gordon Bok. He had just done a lovely concert and on the way out an old lady said to him, "You have a great voice; you should do something with it." He replied, "I thought I just did,"

I used to attend a 'certain' folk club in the past , where one of the regulars couldnt stop talking , heckling , and generally getting up peoples noses. I said "I'll sing XXXX" and noisy bugger said "I Know That One" - So I said "You sing it then" and sat down -- Got a round of applause from the club !

I suppose it could have continued...

VPNL: So it wasn't you! You must have a double!

Me: Don't mind if I do...

The one with the mike has a big advantage. Even if you don't use a mike, you are still the focus of attention and can really destroy a heckler if you are so inclined.

Jud Strunk to female heckler, "Give me a break, I wouldn't pull the mattress out from under you while you are working."

That's ok, I remember my first beer."

"That's ok, I have a retarded Sister too."

When I was debating which of the tracks I had recorded, would be included in the final cut, I had as my advisor and neutral observer, a well known singer songwriter of my acquaintance. having listened to a few tracks, and adjusted the reverb, base, etc. we came to my recording of one of my all time favourite songs, Don't Think Twice it's all Right.
We listened to it, me, himself, and the recording engineer. "Well" I said, "do you think it needs the balance adjusting, or what?"
"It's not one of your best songs is it?" he said.
I can take a hint; you won't find it in the track list on my CD ☺

I had a friend many years ago who was a bit worried. His group were playing at a place in my locality and he had heard that the previous weekend the guy playing didn't go down too well. So the owner of the place took the performer out to the washrooms, beat the shit out of him and kicked him out with no pay. Quite the act to follow, anyhow his group got paid and there were no fisticuffs.

Hi, John. I for one am glad you didn't record 'Dont Think Twice, It's All Right.' I consider it a snide, hypocritical song.

"..I'll be on the dark side of the road..." (dodging the child-support payments)

"You just wasted my precious time..." Now there's a line from a truly twisted personality!
=======
Dave:

"People who re-decorate are not dopplegangers, Mr H, they are paperhangers..."

That is truly poetry, Dave. Love it!

You guys think you have been the victim of put downs.......... just try playing a banjo, it's an unusual night if I DON'T get a snidey comment!

...... and they usually have the audacity to think it constitutes humour.

Gets really wearing after a while.

Well Leenia, I certainly never looked at the song that way. I always saw it as story of a betrayed lover, regretting that he'd ever met the lady in the first place.
The line 'You just kinda wasted my precious time' epitomised for me, the way I felt after one particularly sad end to a love affair. I felt so distraught and disappointed at the time, that I cursed the fact that we'd ever met.
Can still remember now, exactly how I felt, and it was about 40 years ago.
I'm sure I'm not the first one to empathise with Dylan's sentiments in the song.

What can you expect from a guy who steals other people's songs? Paul Clayton wrote the original and Dylan reworked it. I like Dylan's song, but I prefer Clayton's.

i was gonna say i hope the songwriter got credit for any song you recorded..or even a royalty, but did not know the ACTUAL source
of the song.

I was thinking about Tom Paxton, as i was confusing the song
Last thing on My Mind, thinking that was the song you mentioned.

Having tuned in late to this thread, I've just upbraided Dave Roberts for his initial post and the subsequent destruction of my ale-spattered keyboard.

But he should have been honored to have been mistook for an honest working man!
