My newest Opera browser, "Opera Unite" has a feature allowing me to 'share' images directly from my computer. It lets me designate a directory and post a link to it. http://extree.extree.operaunite.com/ click on 'visit' and enter the password 'woodstuff'. It should give you 24 images, with 'original size' or slideshow.... The last 4 images, 21-24 are my latest, special, once-in-a-lifetime project. (I am taking better pics of it, and will post them later and refresh this thread) Note: This is ONLY available when I have that browser open and 'share' enabled. If it says I am offline, it may be that I just forgot to enable something. I go to bed here between 10-11PM EST and shut everything down. If I decide some pics need to be on a permanent server, I have 2-3 other places I'll post them. (Ain't technology |

That first pic was from my last album on the space I got from the 'My Opera' site http://my.opera.com/extree/albums/ The 2nd was from the storage space my ISP gives me...http://home.comcast.net/~somethingextree/turnings/P7012127.JPG I have many, many images and music files there of various types, but there's no index....I have to provide link for each item. I also have 'some' stuff on Flickr..which I forget to look at. And now the new Opera Unite lets me 'share' any directory I designate, or move stuff into and out of just one directory. That can be a problem when links remain in places like Mudcat threads, as old links may not have the same thing in the future, or the password may change, or someone may be very surprised if I forget to remove the pics of the goat, the nuns in leather and the trampoline filled with Jello. ☺ |

I have an overgrown lilac hedge that needs serious cutting. Every year I deeply regret sending that gorgeous old wood to the city compost heap. Some is 2-4 inch diameter, with that beautiful purple grain. My kids think I'm just a crazy old lady, trying to save my trash, but I haven't found a local wood turner or carver for it. I'm in southern NH. |

We use the generic term 'burl' to describe 'lumps' on a tree, but they can be of various origins. I have made some wonderful things from burls/galls.... some people make most of their living just finding and selling burls to we pooooor woodturners. |

(There were two, side-by-side)It was drooping and dropping snow, so I said better to have extra room ....and wood to play with. I'm glad I did. What takes time is doing non-standard things....that and most sanding. Woodturning is a relatively fast art form when taking a solid piece of mostly dry wood and making an open bowl-shaped thing from it...or drilling a smallish hole, hollowing the inside a bit, then sanding just the outside ('cause you CAN'T sand the inside). I do some of that, because it's good to have an assortment when doing a show, but somehow, I got into doing stuff with rough edges...maybe leaving the bark on... and stuff with odd shapes out of weird woods with 'unusual' textures and hardnesses. This means stopping to check where you are more often, being extra careful of delicate edges and rough spots, and trying to **sand** into crevices and at odd angles. Sanding can easily be the major part of a piece. Also, just getting dressed (for turning odd shaped wood with flying pieces) can take time....gotta have a Tyvek suit, dust mask, face shield, vacuum set-up, and maybe a left-hand glove to protect left hand close to those loose flying parts... *grin*. Then, working thru a small hole to hollow a larger piece means holding on tight and stress...and the arm gets tired, so need to stop more often. (I don't burn a lot of calories...no cardiovascular workout, but still get weary...and at MY age... ☻) ...so.. I try to use time better by doing something small on my smaller lathe while 'resting' from the larger one, but *shrug*... it is still standing and straining with no real exercise. (I remember on one forum, there was a guy who bragged that he turned 10-12 large (9-15" dia.) bowls a DAY..(his wife did power-sanding on them) then did ONE big show a year. He was fast and good...but most of his stuff all looked the same...big, open bowls. I would be bored silly!) |

Another thing he used to do was drive thru the countryside looking for specific trees. He would talk to a farmer (landowner) and ask if he could fell a particular tree, bury it for three years and come back for it.... for a price. Nobody ever asked him to pay. The bowls and such... musical instruments... he made from the "starting to rot" trees were simply amazing. The slight rot gave a contrast to the grain that was fascinating in some pieces. It is truly an art that gives a warm feeling... an "earthly" feeling. Nice works, Bill. |

Resonant like spruce being light weight and soft enough to vibrate and stiff enough to support violin strings. Some wood is too dense to work on a violin. Maple or Walnut however is used on the back of violins like the cabinate of a speaker. |

You share a lot in common with one of our guys who only works with found wood from folks he knows. They pull out a hedge, he grabs the wood. They prune or fell trees and drop it off at his place. A couple of times a year he and 4 other artisans of various disciplines have a show. I am no where near your level of competence but I hope to get there. I also cut off as much as I dared with saws first...made it as round as possible. This thing was quite unbalanced....had more weight in one inside area than the other, so it was slow and cautious, using tools with the least 'catch' quotient - that is, small sharp points on heavy tools, until I got it down a ways. Inside, it was even harder. as I had to brace my tools very carefully. This was as hard as anything I've done, and it seemed to take forever. Usually, on smaller pieces with limbs & roots and such sticking out, the trick is to turn them faster, so there's shorter time for a tool to 'catch' between spaces....but this one was too big to allow that much torque. I just let it go whap, whap, whap, taking very light cuts until it was sorta under control. |

First, I cut them down and then I put a chain around the stumps and pulled them out with my trusty 4WD Dodge Militray truck... I love the last ones best, of the finished yew root...fantastic. Also, the yew root vase #34...stunning. Years ago you posted one which was a vase kind of like that, or maybe a bowl, anyway it had just one open space in it and I fell in love with it. It was the first time I'd seen a wooden object made with all the "warts" from Cinderella to Princess, so to speak. Do you remember which one I mean and do you have a picture of it which you could put up? I always wear my "pink" heart when I go to the cardio. Other times I wear the Siamese cat pendant Micca brought me from Rita. You are both such incredibly talented and creative folk! |

They branch off way high...too high to be reached without a ladder and I think the forest service would not approve of that. BUT, reading of your curing through burial, I wonder if an old piece off the ground would be of interest? We do see branches down and/or ones which have been culled. There's also a lot of fallen juniper and pinyon pine, but the stuff on the ground is usually old and very dry. They are beautiful when polished up, though. |

At my age, I don't produce enough volume to travel around..but thank you for the good words! Kat... it was never a big deal about the Aspen. I 'suspect' that it might be pretty bland, and I have NO idea if it spalts in any interesting ways. If you ever see a piece on the ground where the end grain looks streaky & such, and isn't already cracked & rotting, take a picture! (No use using the mail without being sure...and I DO have lots of wood. Now, I know a woman who used to turn, and who went out of her way to collect Juniper when she was out that way. I just have never tried it...but maybe sometime.... |

A lot of it is JUST the sort of things I like to do. I really like the Elm Burr. (A friend brought me a medium sized piece from England several years ago, and I did something similar to the hollow form with the small opening.) I usually don't do pieces larger than 11" diameter, as that's all I can do over the bed, but a few platters and my latest Yew root...and a few others.. were done with headstock rotated. Does Mr. Sooz (evidently Mike, by name) do regular shows? |

Mike does craft fairs leading up to Christmas but has a permanent stall at a craft and design centre. (They charge rent and commission, but all we have to do is to tidy and replenish every couple of weeks or so.) |
