BS: Really SOFT all-cotton socks?

Maybe this should be an adjunct thread to the old why do you wear socks with sandals, or the old Birkenstock thread, but anyway...do any of you have a fav. source for REALLY, REALLY SOFT all-cotton socks? I used to get them at an outlet store in Mystic, CT - all socks, the whole store, but we have nothing like that here.

I've ordered some from FootSmart, online, looked at Cabellas, REI, bought some from the pedorthic services socks stock to no avail. Vermont Country Store lists several selections as "cotton" but if you read the fine print, only one, the costliest at $25/pair, is 100% cotton! It's hard to find anything which is all cotton and, if they are, they seem to get more rough with use and washing, rather than softer.

I thought I'd found some the other day which I could use only to find out they are all cotton but treated with an antibacterial or some such crap to cut down on odour as well as some other treatment, can't remember what, both of which made me itch, plus the socks felt very rough after being washed a few times. (The first wash I do is always with vinegar to take the sizing out.)

So...any ideas? Thanks a bunch!

Correction, the socks at VCS are THREE pair for $25. I might actually try those ones.

Ask a knitting friend to knit some for you with one of the new soft, pretty cotton yarns?

The VCS products are usually of high quality, kat. It's a good company; still family run. They are also amazing at tracking down products for which their customers are searching, so if they don't have exactly what you need they may find them or have them made. Seems theirs should be worth a try. Have you called their toll free number to ask about the softness of the socks you are considering? Hope you find what you need.

Cotton socks that don't get less and less fluffy as you wash them? On this planet? Pull the other one.

PS You wear socks with Birkenstocks because it keeps your toes warm.

O..O

I get some very nice cotton socks with the gold toe from a local department store (Dillards) but I think they're available in various places. Can't remember what the brand is.

Can you give me a link to the socks-with-sandals thread ? I am utterly opposed to the death penalty but if there was ever a crime that might change my mind.........

Here's one, Smedley. I am sure there have been others though, it is one of 'those' subjects.

My own sock thing is that I find any cotton content most uncomfortable, likewise artificial fibres of all kinds. Give me wool or nothing at all (Oh, go on, force me and I will accept silk)

The most comfortable I've ever found were made by Falke - I think they had a tiny amount of elastane in but otherwise pure cotton. They didn't mould themsleves to your feet as well as most socks, so they came in right- and left-footed forms. (I have chronic dermatitis on the soles of my feet, so a lot of socks irritate the skin and I'm fussy).

The Most *Famous* Sock Thread and,

The Birkenstock thread.

Thanks, folks, I will look into some of your suggestions. As to wool...it makes me break out and itch!:-)

maeve, I think I will call them, thanks.

SRS, are the all cotton? I seem to recall gold-toe socks, but not liking them for some reason.

Thanks, again, folks.

I like the Maggie's Organics socks that Mom has sent for Christmas over the years -- a bit pricey for me, but when it comes down to it, they're my favorites, so good value. (I've got the tie-dyed ones on now - the fuschia tops go with my bathrobe and it's cheering to a sickie...)

Looking at their selection, I guess the ones I have have 10% nylon, along with the spandex in the top. They do have some 99% cotton ones. They have this testimonial on that page: "So I have discovered something, the Maggie's socks are EVEN MORE awesome after washing them!!!! Ahhhhh! True love! - Lauren, MI"

I petted/pinched some at Orscheln a while back and was pleased by their softness. Have you tried a place that sells workboots?

Have you tried alpaca socks, kat? One year just before coming home from Oregon I visited an alpaca farm in Amity and bought several pairs for friends. They were the softest socks I have ever felt.

The Gold Toe socks come in lots of varieties. I have some really comfortable cotton ones that are kind of an oatmeal look, my favorites. I need to pick up some more one day soon, so I'll send the name when I get my hands on them.
