Tech: Audio:Vista/Windows 7

I've recorded 4 CDs on my PC using Windows XP but time has rather caught up with it and in spite of putting in more memory I think it's going to struggle to cope with the demands of Cubase.

I've got a modern laptop which I will probably need to transfer recording functions to. So far I haven't put that many demands on the new machine just using it for WP and internet. I've heard a lot of bad things about Vista and its handling of audio and the question I'm posing is would it be worth me upgrading to Windows 7 before setting up the system.

Anyone tried recording with either Vista or 7 -advice would be appreciated.

All I can say is, if you want to run your old XP recordings, you need to upgrade to Win7 Ultimate, which has the facility to run in XP emulation mode.
You also need a minimum of 2GB RAM to run this facilty.

Oh and BTW, steer clear of Vista ;)

Thanks, John. I'll probably leave the old recordings untouched as they are all mastered now; I'll probably try to get all future ones done on an updated system.

I like my 64-bit Windows 7, but I don't know if I'd upgrade from XP to Windows 7....or does your "modern laptop" have Vista?
I've used Audacity for editing recordings with both Vista and Windows 7, and it has worked very well.
I haven't used Cubase, so I don't know if the current version of Cubase will accept recordings from an older edition.

My laptop has Vista, and I'm thinking of doing all future recordings on it. It's just a question of whether to invest in the update to 7 from Vista and the query was to see if anyone had experience of audio with 7>

For what its worth most professional recordists using Windows based system that I know stay well away from Vista and many are sticking with XP for as long as they can.

7 does seem an improvement by accounts from friends - I run a Mac with Logic Pro myself
