It seems like it's gonna be wet & heavy....which means traffic hassles and broken limbs. I've filled the bird feeders and have a plastic tarp to cover the car...(makes it a 'bit' easier to clean off later... We have food and don't need to go out, since I am sure our Mid-Winter folk festival will be canceled. |

But it's real and it's becoming increasingly likely that a historic event is in the cards. If you have any doubts, check out this afternoon's satellite shot showing amazing moisture feeds into what is already a gigantic system. The time is now to make final preparations as we are less than 24 hours out from the start. FORECAST IN DETAIL Through tonight: The calm before the monster storm continues as skies trend cloudier. Lows in the mid-to-upper 20s. Tomorrow (Friday): We won't warm much with clouds and precipitation inbound. Look for highs in the mid 30s, falling back to and below freezing as snow gets underway by the late morning or early afternoon. By evening, snow should be falling at a moderate pace with at least 3-5" of accumulation common across the area and rates increasing into the night. Dangerous weather: This will be a high-impact storm any way you cut it. Heavy wet snow will create difficult digging out conditions and may lead to numerous power outages. To minimize the risk of injury during digging, it is best to clear snow often. Wind and near-blizzard (or even blizzard) conditions may occur overnight Friday and into Saturday, Blizzard Warnings are already up to our east and we did have them issued in December. We just had 22 inches in Decemeber and it took me three intense days of tractor duty to dig out... The problem with where we are is that we are on the western side of the Blue Ridge at 1700 feet and when these things come in from the west we get hammered... The other problem is that our drive way is close to a half a mile long and narrow whyich means having to remove large depths of snow one front loader bucket at a time and backing up the hill and dumping the snow in the few places where it can be stashed... It amounts to hundreds and hundreds of buckets of snow... And my Kabota has no cab so it's cold and the snow just covers me and the tractor... But... ...I got beer and a little moonshine left... I got lots of firewood stacked up safe in the mudroom... Hopefully we won't lose electricity but I'll be fillin' the bath tub in the mornin' just in case we gotta have water for flushin' toilets, etc... Worst part about all this is that I am supposed to close on the sale of the spec house I built down below a week from today... Ol' hillbilly really needs that to happen... But, I guess we are ready... I've been thru these before... 31 inches back in the mountains of Wes Ginny... But if it wants to go somewhere else that would suit me fine... B~ |

I lived in Kansas, and have seen maybe 2 'blizzards', which was reserved for heavy snow coming at you sideways.... still, the system is supposed to be moving 'fast', so I supposed more wind than usual is possible. (Oh...in Kansas, they didn't even say 'snow storm' unless there was a lot of snow and quite a bit of wind. Here, they call anything over 2 inches a 'storm'.) |

We have had as much as 1.62m in less than 12 hours with wind since I had camera... worse before that when I was a lad... I think I recall. As a lad, I had to crawl out the back door, put on my snowshoes and shovel just so we could see out the front room window. Now, that ain't as bad as I have seen pics of elsewhere, but 0.6m don't seem so bad. It's all what yer used to, I guess.... and prepared for, indeed. Good luck! |

We had over 2 ft. that night, but all it was was a heavy snow where the system had developed right over us and sat there. There was 'some' wind, but nothing like a blizzard. The whole DC area was shut down for 2 days. |

About $16 bucks for a fifth or $80 a gallon. 190 proof corn likker and no hangovers. Only down side is it's legal and not so much fun. I perfer blackberry brandy though for workin' outside in the snow. It keeps you warm somehow. Any way, tie a rope from the back porch post to the barn and another to the outhouse you you won't get lost in a whiteout. |

Winter storm, blizzard warnings for Delaware up to 24 inches of snow possible A major winter storm developing over the Gulf of Mexico has the potential to dump enough snow to paralyze parts of the mid-Atlantic region this weekend -- including Delaware, forecasters say, with up to 24 inches possible in parts of the state. A winter storm warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday for New Castle County, the National Weather Service says. The service predicts 12 to 18 inches of snow upstate. Quantcast A blizzard warning is in effect in the same time frame for Kent and Sussex counties, where up to 24 inches of snow may accumulate combined with stiff winds that may produce whiteout conditions. Sussex County emergency officials also warned there is a potential for coastal tidal flooding and residents should prepare by securing loose items. The temperature tonight will drop to about 25, rising to the mid-30s on Friday. Precipitation may begin in the afternoon as rain or a mix of rain and snow, or a mix of snow and sleet, with little accumulation until it turns to all snow after 7 p.m. Winds are expected to pick up around 1 a.m. Saturday. From: Sawzaw We are about to be paralyzed Virginia Declares State of Emergency Before Impending Blizzard Northern and western parts of Virginia are expected to see well over a foot of snow beginning Friday morning, prompting Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell to declare a state of emergency in advance of impending blizzard conditions. McDonnell's Wednesday declaration authorizes state agencies to aid local governments in responding to storm conditions. The purpose of the declaration is to allot extra preparation time for emergency and road management crews. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), 94 percent of the state snow removal budget has already been spent on earlier winter storms. However, VDOT has an emergency reserve fund set up to serve as monetary back-up if future storms cause a need for more manpower and supplies. VDOT wants people to know that despite budget concerns, road conditions will be first priority with this weekend's storm. Residents are urged to stay off area roadways, with white-out conditions creating extremely hazardous travel conditions. High winds are also expected, with power outages a likely outcome. Accumulation for this storm had the potential to match or exceed snowfall totals from the December mid-Atlantic blizzard. The Washington, D.C. and surrounding metro areas are already very close to surpassing all-time winter snowfall records. Guess we're havin' a catch-up year... Been snowin' here since before light... I went out to get another 5 gallons of diesel fuel... They were sold out at the place I usually get it so I had to ride around a little to get it... They're callin' for 22 inches-plus here in Page County... As for moving the house??? I don't think the basement wants to get dragged down the hill... Plus, half the drive way is cut into the side of the mountain and very narrow and one little slip and the house would become a gravity test... As for Everclear??? Shine is shine and Everclear ain't shine... Well, ol' Boberdz plan is to go out once there's about 4 inches of snow and plow what I can to both sides of the driveway and try to do that every 4 inches afterwards... It was just before Christmas, I think around 1930 (I wsn't born yet), and my father drove to town 10 miles away (The family was Amish but in North Dakota cars were allowed) to pick up some last stuff. He knew a storm was coming but thought he'd get home before it hit. He bought his things but by the time he got them into the car the snow was flying thick and heavy. It occurred to him to spend the night in town but he didn't want to leave my mother alone with the children, plus if the roads were closed for any length of time there was stock to tend to. So he took off. About three miles out of town his car started cutting out and finally quit entirely. He worked on it and worked on it but it was no go. By this time the wind was howling and visibility was just about zero. He thought about walking back to town but figured his chances of getting home were just about as good as they were of getting back to town. Besides, he knew the terrain – pretty flat - and the fences... At home my mother fed the children an early supper then went out to feed the cows and horses. They had long since tied ropes between various buildings and my mother clung to them, afraid that if she fell down she'd never find the house again. She milked the milch cow but long before she made it back to the house the wind tore the bucket from her hand and it flew away. Safely back in the house she assured the children that Daddy would stay in town until tomorrow and promised them she would pop some corn and make some hot cocoa for a special treat. It was long after dark when the door flew open and crashed against the wall. A snow-covered hulk lurched into the house. My mother screamed, the children started crying. |

I went out and did my preparations....as best I could. Moved car & van to the base of drive and covered them with sheets of plastic, leaving a clear area behind them where I can easily?? shovel when it's over, then I can move vehicles back and have 'relatively' clear access to street with as little shoveling as possible. Also lined up about 8 trash cans and plastic tubs in the narrowest area between house & driveway, so I can just lift and dump them, leaving some bare pavement underneath. (Taking pics as I go... need to document this one! I 'may' go out and shovel several times during the evening, on my theory that doing 15 minutes on 3" 4-5 times is better than 3 hours of 20" when it's done.) Y'all stay warm, ya' hear? |

According to the National Weather Service, Washington has gotten more than a foot of snow only 13 times since 1870. The heaviest on record was 28 inches in January 1922. But the biggest snowfall is believed to have occurred in 1772, before official records were kept, when as much as 3 feet fell in the Washington-Baltimore area. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson mentioned the event in their diaries, according to the weather service." |

I have 'scooped'/shoveled twice so far, just to stay ahead while I can.(I am NOT gonna stay up all night). Wet indeed, and I am using a pushbroom to shake the branches of our bushes that line the downstairs entrance, so they don't break, and so they don't block the path. If this is gonna be one for the history books, I am gonna do my bit to fight it. What we are worried about is potential power outages from limbs on power lines. We are cooking a couple things than can be eaten cold...and I have LOTS of peanut butter & bread! *grin* |

From: Sawzaw At first I thought people were over reacting because of the whopper we got in December but now I am back to the blizzard mode. I see they are calling for 20 to 30" in the WV panhandle. I was planning on going up there today for the weekend. Now I am glad I didn't. I am sorry to say it but you are in for it Bobert. Maybe somebody can air drop a snowblower in there. Suburban living has it's advantages. I only have to shovel about 10 feet to get to the street. Here they are calling for winds up to 40 MPH. I remember in '58 we got about 12" but it was so cold it didn't melt and the wind blew up 20 foot drifts. My maw and my brother got stuck halfway between DC and Annapolis where Wild world is now. We were in a Studebaker Golden Hawk which was pretty low to the ground. We were stuck in a farmhouse there for 3 days until a big ass bulldozer with one of those huge V blades blasted through so we could get out. Then we proceeded toward Annapolis and got as far as Davidsonville where Homestead Gardens is now. There was a big dip in the road that was filling up with drifts every 5 minutes after it was cleared. A road grader would go through and about 6 cars would follow before it drifted shut. The grader would turn around and come back with 6 cars behind. The back up was so bad and getting worse we turned 'er around and went back to DC to my oldest bro's house for another 3 before we could get through. |

My invisible nylon deer fence has collapsed from the snow sticking to the tiny filiments that form 2 inch wide squares. Collapse hazards may be in the offing for flat roofed buildings in the area. I wired the furnace so that if we lose electricty I can still keep the furnace going with power inverters attached to one of our cars. At midnight I will make a pass with a snow blower since it can only handle up to 18 uinches at a time. With a brace on my knee I found I can walk well enough to go slow. |

It is difficult to tell how many inches we have had because it is drifting so bad. One guy got out of here in a CJ type Jeep a little while ago. He had snow tires on all fours but he could only go about 20 feet at a time. Then he had to back up and get up some momentum to go another 20 feet. The snow was deeper than his ground clearance so his whole jeep was dragging a path through the snow. I am staying right here. we will be OK as long as the power stays on. Fortunately we are near a substation fed by a power transmission line and not a lot of trees to come down a mess up things. All the power lines in the whole community are underground. Looks like we will get at least 30". I would not bet against getting 36". It may possibly exceed the 36" snowfall that Washington and Jefferson both wrote about in the 1770's. |

We had 18" over here in Rockville as of about 11am this morning when I made the first attempt of shoveling. I'm about to go out for the 2nd. On the bright side, the folks our complex hires to deal with the common sidewalks (and the street) have been through. OTOH they shoveled or blew a lot of that between our cars. One power outage sometime early in the morning. Don't know when it started, but the power was out when the cats woke us up demanding breakfast at 6:30am. It went back on while we were trying to get back to sleep. Other than that, just sipping tea and watching DVDs and TiVO. Oh yes, and I'm mightily *PISSED* the storm wiped out BOTH the MiniFest and a James Keelaghan concert in Baltimore. Been a few years since we've seen Keelo. -- Gary |

In the time we were chatting it had just started to come down and by the time we finished everything was white. Mu brother is not with mom, but my 17 year old niece and her friend are with her. My sister and her partner are just down the road. I get worried because my Mom is 82 and a bit on the frail side. Good to know her twin, my aunt Dot is not at her cottage on the Chickahominy. The power always goes out in these storms. But she is also in Hopewell, staying with Uncle Bob (the older brother). |

Continues to Be Blasted by Huge Snowstorm and Blizzard February 06, 2010 Jake Emen The massive blizzard in the Mid-Atlantic region is continuing to drop snow at a steady, fast pace. The huge predictions for snow put the entire region into a frenzy, and as of Saturday, February 6 everything is basically shut down in the Washington D.C. Metro area. I've been recounting the blizzard since it began early yesterday morning, and you can read more updates on my D.C. Blizzard Updates blog. You'll be able to see how the storm has progressed all throughout yesterday and today, as well as snow totals and accumulations and more. Thank you everyone for all of the kind comments I have received there, and I will continue updating that as the day continues. As mentioned, from my area in Rockville, Maryland, which is north of Washington D.C., everything has come to a standstill. As of about 1:30 pm Saturday, there was about 20-22 inches of snow on the ground, with another 3-5 inches of snow on the way. This will satisfy the 24 inch predictions, but come short of the 30 inch predictions, and the circulating rumors that the Pentagon held briefings warning of 48 inches of snow. In Montgomery County and the D.C. area, public transportation is basically completely done with. Above ground metro stations in the D.C. area have been closed since last evening, as have been Montgomery Country Ride On buses. All local businesses also appear to be closed. To the area's credit, the local government seems to be pretty proactive about getting the snow cleared as much as possible right now. The roads are still a disaster - but a lot of progress has been made. In combination with the steady, wet snow, there have also been wind gusts exceeding 30 mph. This has created an environment with a minimal amount of visibility, and areas with drifting snow. Some snow drifts just walking along the streets have accumulated to over 4 feet in depth. It's easy to get lost in there. There have been some reports of power outages all throughout the region, and even just venturing out to a few local streets there have been a handful of downed trees and large branches from trees. It seems the situation could get worse before it gets better, but the snow is expected to stop by later on this afternoon. As for me during the rest of the D.C. blizzard, I'll be bunkered down. I'm set to go with the essentials - chili ingredients, beer, wine and chips - for the Super Bowl tomorrow afternoon, and I certainly won't be attempting to leave the house at any point soon. In some places it's prolly close to 28 inches and others a mere 24 inches, depending on wind drifts, etc... Second of all, my biggest mistake before the snow was putting the tractor into the equipement barn nose first... My thinkin' was that I wanted to keep the deisel engine outta the cold wind Open side of the barn)... Problem was that it took an entire half an hour of using the rear blade to push and push snow at various angles and blade heights in order to get the tractor turned around where I could use the front loader... But I finally got it turned around and spend the entire morning and afternoon diggin' out... So far I've made it 300 feet of the 1300 or so feet of driveway... That ain't all that good but I think I can do 400-500 feet today... It's slow because I'm having to go down get one buck full of snow and then back the tractor up to an area that I cleared yesterday where I am stacking the snow... The piles are right at 8 feet tall which makes it real interetsing in there because I can't see anything but stacks of snow in a horseshoe all around me... Ahhhhh, I do have a friend who has a real big tractor (with a heated cab) who is going to try to make it down below today and work from the bottom of ther driveway... If he can get 500 feet then I'll be out by Tuesday... If not, with the snow we are expectin' Tuesday night I might have to walk out and hitch a ride to town for more beer... The shine is almost gone... But, we never lost power so that's a good thing and... ...go Saints!!! B~ |

My wife has been watching two nests on the webcams in the greater DC area, Blackwater in West Virginia and Shepherdstown in Maryland. In both nests the eagles had already laid eggs. The eagles were valiantly trying to keep their nest bowls free of snow but by this morning the WV nest looked overwhelmed and it's very cold. I keep thinkin' snowblower, snowblower. I only need a snow shovel at home but I have to pay someone to plow snow elsewhere. Never was a problem since 2003 except in the last three years it is costing more and more. I might spring for a snowblower and some chains for my 'Bota. If not a front one, a rear mounted one at least. That way there is no problem figuring out where to put the snow. You just fling it 20 feet and make it deeper elsewhere. |

The hitch will raise the thing up and down with no hydraulic hookups needed, just the PTO shaft which is needed either way. |

We got a Craftsman from Sears: 22 inch opening, 5 horsepower, electric start, self-propelled (but you still gotta guide it), dual stage, all that good stuff. Didn't use it much the first winter. The second winter, well, we had about a foot and I used it to clear out driveway, the sidewalk, the neighbors' sidewalks, and the alley. Did that a couple of times (note that Indiana gets HEAVY WET SNOW). Then I moved down to No. Kentucky, where it historically doesn't snow all that much. Back in South Bend, it snowed forty-four (44) inches in a weekend. My wife used the snowblower several times during that storm, clearing as I'd done (the driveway opened into the alley). She who had been questioning the need for such a big, powerful, machine realized just how downright RIGHT was I. Now every winter when the stores have their snowblower sales she's right there, wondering if it's time to get a 24 inch or a 30 inch or, God help me, a 36 inch. Just keep saying to yourself, "This is one of those times when bigger really IS better." |

Remember that the Canadians are sweating for snow for their Winter Olympics - they brought tons in by road and it melted in the rain. Poor things. Maybe the US could save the day(s) with refridgerated trucks and trains to store and move snow in for the main events. Always assuming anything is moving at all. We never got more than a sprinkling of snow when the rest of the UK was snowed under for days, so it is really the luck of the draw - though sometimes I think that the weather can have a wicked sense of humour. Went out at 10:20 and worked until 12:30 and got 210 feet more of drive way open... At this rate I might hit the 500 foot mark by the end of the day... I donno... I'll be gettin' into some tougher areas purdy soon where I'm goin' to have to carve out an area back in the woods for snow as the driveway get real narrow and drops off purdy steep... I can easily blow snow from alongside my garage onto my neighbour's garage... about 100'... when he's not at home, of course. |

I'm just hoping they get here by Sometime Tuesday -- just in time for the next round! I'm taking the digging-out slowly. I shoveled a pedestrian walkway to the street this morning (phase 1), and this afternoon I got MOST of phase 2 -- digging out the car -- done. Now you can see that it's a car, not an igloo. But my back's starting to hurt, so I'm quitting till tomorrow, when I hope to be able to clear the rest of the car with a snow brush (assuming I can get the door open to retrieve the brush...). Phase 3 is the hardest: digging out the driveway wide enough for the car to get through -- not to mention cutting through the plow-leavings. And it's getting harder to dispose of the stuff -- I'm having to lift it pretty high to toss it into a spot I'm not going to have to dig through later.... Ain't this FUN?! Kendall, you can gloat all you want about how well you handle the snow in Maine, and how much of it you get. I spent four winters in Waterville, and I know Mainers take it in stride and deal with it matter-of-factly. But the fact is that this much snow is a real rarity here, and the municipalities can only justify allotting so much of their annual budgets for something that happens so rarely. Our December storm (15" here in Kensington) made it to eighth place in DC's ALL-TIME biggest snowstorms, and this one (25" here) was ranked 4th, thereby pushing the December one to 9th. Two such big storms in one winter is downright FREAKISH! Anyhow, I'm looking forward to seeing you next weekend, if I can get out of my street... |

I'll swear by the trick of getting a roll of 6 mil plastic from Home Depot, and cutting off a chunk big enuf to cover 'most' of your car...then after you push most of the snow off, you just peel the plastic off and car is clear! No ice in the door...etc. I have used that twice here to save cars from a predicted ice storm. (heck, I'm due for a new roll for leaves next year....maybe I'll save you a chunk..) Darriel & I got 'almost' to the street tonight...I guess we'll finish a path tomorrow....just in time to get out to the store too late to get anything before the NEXT round.... |

There is six foot banks of snow along all the highways. The turn lanes are not cleared. People have to walk in street. Every place there is a place to walk is like a WW2 trench. Half of the parking spaces are piled up 12' high with snow. Some piles look to be nearly 20' high. There is no place to put it and maybe 20 more inches coming. Snowmageddon is here. |

I have moved 3 tons of snow already from the driveway and out back. Driving is a wild slide ride on the unplowed connecting street. The power has been out twice. I put an inverter on the one car but it wouldn't start after shoveling 50 feet to get to it. Then I put the inverter on the Buick and got the furnace blower up and running with an extension cord until the power came back 3 hours later. Safeway grocery store is out of eggs tomatos bananas produce in general but I did get a watermellon ?! |

They were so puffed up for warmth, they didn't look like robins at first. The neighbor says the gang had been there over a week, eating the holly berries, though those are all gone now -- probably why the robins weren't there yesterday morning. I've never seen flocks of them before. They must have come north in last week's warm weather, then gotten caught in the storms. This was in Lanham, a couple miles east and south of Bill's house (think 2:00 on the Beltway clock-face). Another friend says there's a flock like that in her oaks over in Tacky Park too, closer to where Bill lives. Hope they don't all end up as birdsicles. Lynn T |

We've been putting out seed, Leeneia, and even trekked out to Annapolis yesterday to replenish ---safflower in one feeder, peanuts in another, suet seedcakes, and mixed millet etc in another. Periodically the grackles mob through and push everyone else out of the way, but otherwise it's eastern juncoes, nuthatches, titmice, cardinals, a pair of mourning doves, an occasional bluejay, and the odd downy or spotted woodpecker taking turns. I made a roof snow rake out of 3 pvc pipes and t fittings and u fittings glued with pvc cement and steel duct tape. The middle is double 3/4 tubing bound by duct tape so it does not bend too much. On the rake end I strung nylon string like a snow shoe lace. It is 30 feet long and flexible enough to work on a second story. On one story roofs it will go all the way to the crest. It takes 30 minutes to make. The average house here has 6 tons of snow on it. Another 20 inches will compromise many more roofs. |

Then I; made the rake, went shopping twice, walked the dog twice, cleared more snow.. all the while on a crutch and in relentless searing hip pain. Now after a dinner of BBQ ribs, salad and mac&cheese I am full of pain killers motrin vitamins and all is well in the world as I listen to Joshua Bell and complain about the snow on mudcat forum. We took flash pics and went out on the porch 10 ft. away and all he did was look and try once more. I don't think he got enough to help his obvious hunger, but it was just too hard for him and he finally gave up. Kinda feel sorry for him, but not a lot I can do. (Last year we had 'em in the attic. It was leaking so bad they closed the store along with another one that was leaking. The roof on a firehouse in Fairfax county collapsed and another is in danger. However with the 25"+ snow we have plus maybe plus another 10 to 20 will be hard roofs. And guess what? More coming on Monday. Right now it says showers. We are now under a Blizzard warning. |

One guy had his roof collapse under him when he was trying to clear the snow. The building departments will have a heyday over this and over react just like they did in 1973 when a high rise under construction collapsed in Bailey's Crossroads Virginia. For years after that it was almost impossible to get a permit. It was like they just didn't want anything built. Anyhoo the wind is picking up now and it is hard to see across the street. Supposedly we have 7 1/2 " of new snow so far. Yesterday I was going to move several big piles of snow in a parking lot out of the way to make room for some more big piles. It took me 4 hours just to move one pile with my 1/2 yard bucket. I gave up on the rest. I am afraid when I get all outfitted with a 3 point snow blower it will be another 5 to 7 years before we get this much snow. By then I probably wont be able anyway. |

My fondest Richmond snow memory was bad around '83... I think it was Feb 17 or 18th 'cause there was a party scheduled for the 17th in NoVa and I had it written on the chalk board in the hall... Anyway, a bunch of folks from Richmond went up to this party 'cause it was being thrown by a woman who had moved up there... Sunday mornin' rolls around and they said it was gonna snow so I beat feet back to Richmond... Started snowin' hard around Ashland and I barely made it back to my house in Woodland Height just south of the James River... I was smart 'cuase everyone else go snowed into that 2 bedroom apartment in NoVa... Think there were about 15 people and it took days to get them out... But nevermind them... The day after it snowed was a Monday and I was workin' for the City of Richmond as a social worker and they told everyone to stay home from work... Reckon there was around a foot of snow, which for Richmond is alot... So me and my dog and my wife took off walkin'... Walked over the Lee Bridge and thru Oregon Hill to the Fan District where we visited with friends and made the best of it... I took my ol' Honetwell Pentex 35mm camera with me and still have a dozen or so pictures of that snow that I took during the day... The End of My Richmond Snow Story... Now, ya'll who are in the middle of the worst of it... Be safe... No gettin' up on the roof, por favor... Now I'm gonna get bundled up and go have at my new snow... Later... B~ |

That's why the plows have stopped for a while. The Maryland transportation guy said they didn't order them stopped, but told drivers they have the option to pull over until conditions improve. At the moment I can hardly see out my window, because the wind has plastered snow to the screen. Say, check out this cool video., which Animaterra linked to on Facebook. More moisture is coming ashore in New England and turning into snow while the whole thing is circulating CCW. Even if it stopped right now it would take a week to get back to normal. I don't have any front steps anymore. Not a damned thing is moving out there. Maybe this was what those rumored secret Pentagon briefings were about. I heard 36" Others said 48". Looks like if there were warnings like this it would not be kept secret. I am wondering about people with oil heat or LP gas heat. How are they getting deliveries? I have Natural Gas heat. |

So the winter of 2009-2010 has had even more than the famous winter of 1898-99. And there's several more weeks of winter left to go... So...it won't be TOO hard to get onto the street...whenever the street is worth getting onto. Shoveling was 'relatively' easier than last time, except for the higher piles to toss it over. As Nancy says, the snow is a bit lighter, and not building up so fast. I think the worst is over as far as accumulation....digging out the whole state? HA! Governor O'Malley just said ALL counties are 'red' for a state of emergency...and *grin*...he told folks to STOP demanding that their streets be scraped down to the pavement. |

And it is still actually snowing -- the blowing and drifting is just an added bonus. Looks to me like we've had 10-12 inches this go-round, but it really is hard to tell because of all the drifting. And it's cold, too. Every shovelfull gets blown back in my face after I fling it as high as I can to reach the top of the existing pile. And maybe someday I'll own a warm hat that doesn't slip down over my eyes every 2-3 minutes. Piss and moan, piss and moan.... So Phase 1-B is now complete: I have a path to the street, for whatever good that does. Street is once again completely impassable, and I guess we've slipped down to the bottom of the plowing priority list again. For a while last night I thought I might actually be able to get out on Thursday to start off for snow-free Maine, but right now it's not looking too good. We shall see. The only good news (other than that I still have power) is that under today's layer of snow I found the newspapers for Saturday through today, obviously delivered in the brief interval between last night's plowing and today's impassability. No mail yet, though -- not even bills and ads. |

The record for a single winter in MD was 62.5" in 1996. Four hours ago it was up to 77.3" for the season. This is the worst season for me and everybody I know. But not without one wild, white-knuckle ride down the last 300 feet on the driveway (straight down, BTW) on the tractor with the front bucket tilted all the way down with so much pressure on the blade that the front tires (steering) were off the ground a good 4 inches and the rear blade adjused down toward the starboard side... Lotta chewin' goin' on there... Didn't break anything but that sumabichin' driveway's stranglehold on our freedom!!! Life is good... Tell, ya'll what... We are up to 79.9" for the season, breaking the previous record of 62.5" by 17.4" We are 4" shy of the record for February. We dug out today and it was not too bad. Not near as bad as I thought it would be. The street is clear and dry. Some guy had a Bobcat stashed in his garage and he did the street. A gigantic loader looking thing with a plow did the road. I don't believe much is open for business so we just stayed home. School is closed for the week. The postman must be buried in a drift somewhere. |

Not sure why...there are sidewalks starting about a block & ½ away, but there's an area of about 5-6 'blocks', criss-crossed by 6-7 streets, where they just didn't bother. My street is a major route for kids to walk to a couple of neighborhood school, and *shrug*...they just walk in the street....and a lot of them with an 'attitude' (4-5 abreast, reluctant to get out of the way of cars). Well, it does save ME the work of clearing walks. |

Incredible - I saw cars still buried up to their roofs and in some cases you could only see the very tops of the parking meters! Traffic was a mess and heading back to Richmond we got on Route 1 and it was paralyzed, so we decided to try some side streets. Well those side streets were still snow covered - DEEP snow covered. A truck ahead of us got stuck and it took around 20 minutes and three people pushing (being all dressed up for a business meeting we couldn't help) to get it going and unblock the street. Richmond's snow was pretty tame in comparison, although of course it still brought everything to a screeching halt and decimated the grocery store shelves. |

I spent 3 hours yesterday diggin' out the 200 foot drive way to thr speck house that I am right in the middle of sellin'... Most of it hadn't been touched since the snow before last so was deep... But at least if we get a phone call from our buyer this morning from DC sayin' he wants to come up (down) and see his house he'll be able to drive to the door... I'm going to be checkin' into the snow blower... The part that kinda concerns me is that seein' as the the driveway goes down from our house and barns it seems that I would have to work backwards or I'd be driving over and thru snow with the tractor before the snow blower got there... In a deep snow that definately woudln't work 'er the tractor would be stuck in no time with snow banked uo against the front of it... B~ |

The drive home always seems particularly tedious, but we made it to his house in PA last night about 10 pm, and I got home to Maryland about noon today. Getting into my driveway was challenging, but I made it! Still LOTS of snow around here! ...and more expected today and tonight, though not much, and mixed with rain. Ugh. |

Combined with what we already had on the ground it was enough to keep the schools closed tomorrow. I told my wife, a teacher, we might as well give up on this year and start over again in the fall. |

It looks clear until you reach a spot where lanes narrow, or a turn lane is blocked. A 4 lane road that narrows to 3...or 2½... for even 100 yards is just a 2½ lane road with miles of parking lot. We found one of those yesterday. Took 15 minutes to cover what is usually a 3 minute trip. |

The schools finally opened on time Monday. The roadsides have been cleared but there is an ugly aftermath. The filthy looking roadside snowbanks have mangled up road signs, mailboxes and shopping carts protruding like mammoth bones on the tundra. Surprise. They are warning about another 5 or more more inches. It snowed all night in PA NY and NJ were blanketed all night and there is still snowing in places but the winds are up to 60 MPH.
