Dear All Catters

My name is Sam Pirt and I am a Catter and a Trustee of a UK based Charity called
'Sengwer Aid', Charity Registration Number 1101825, Website www.sengweraid.co.uk
Sengwer Aid is a British charity that supports the indigenous Sengwer tribe in the West of Kenya.

I am writing to ask if anyone has any secondhand laptops We would be abvle to carry Laptops over to Kenya and install them in the Sengwer Culture and Information Centre, at Kapolet near Kitale, as a valuable resource for the whole community.

Our Charity has already helped the community in many ways:  the building of the Sengwer Culture & Information Centre and the formation of the  Eco-Tourism Project at Kapolet, setting up new Water Projects and Seed Projects, formation of Sengwer Women's Jewellery Co-operative, School Twinning Projects, and AIDS / HIV Training & Awareness.

Please check out our website for more information

Thankyou,

Sam Pirt
Trustee of Sengwer Aid

Good to *see* you, Sam! And, I am not surprised you are involved in such good works. Good for you. I'll ask my Rog if they have any at work; I don't think they will, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Dan, as Sins says, Sam is a longtime member, has been to Mudcat Central, played on Mudcat radio live with video feed, and it is safe to say anything he is involved in is legit and outstanding. I know it's good to be sure, though.:-)

Just one important point, only LAPTOPS as we can carry them over when we go and visit to check on projects etc...

If you have a LAPTOP or have some to give to us then make contact through the charity website and explain it is about the Laptops etc.. and arrangments can be made to get them to us. Or e-mail me via my website - www.sampirt.co.uk (I am no good at links)

A link to the Sengwer Aid website is above, thankyou

I can still remember playing on Mudcat Radio, with Bill Sables & Ian Stephenson, ah the memories

Thankyou all, Sam

But very good to see you here.

Sam, you need to at least drop by every now and then as we miss you and your expertise around here. Connie and Wayne and Karen and I were out a few months ago and "My Grandfather's Clock" came on the background music.....not a normal song for that type of thing. We all laughed and said it must have been for us.

Explanation for Others: When Sam and Ian came to the States with Bill Sables they came to see me. It was the day prior to a surgery preceding the valve surgery and as I had to at the hospital at 5 AM, we were staying at Connie and Wayne's home in Columbus. Bill, Sam, and Ian, came to their house instead and a fine time was had by all. Wayne has a Grandfather's clock that chimes every 15 minutes. If Sam and Ian were playing, it didn't matter what they were playing, but if the clock chimed they transitioned smooothly into a chorus of "Grandfather's Clock" and went back to the original tune.   It was funny and an example of excellent musicianship.

Don't make yourself so scarce Sam. Had a nyckleharpa thread just a few months back.(;<))

Hi Selby

Now I am not technically minded but I am sure we can find someone to clean them out. It should not be a problem.

We can talk more in depth if you e-mail me.
You can mail me via my website - www.sampirt.co.uk

Cheers, Sam

I have been taking in and repairing laptops for about a year now. Once they have been rehabbed, I give them, no questions asked to people who I believe can benefit from access and who can change their lives with access.

If the laptop is rehabbable and is Pentium 3 or newer, I will take it. It does not have to be currently operable and the case does not have to be pretty but all of the parts should be there, including power pack, battery and support disks, if available. I have built a collection of screens and other parts so I can take units with bad monitors.

At present, I have only one ready to go and it's been promised already.

I currently have a Toshiba that I will have to get parts for before I assemble it. When that is done, you are welcome to it.

I am not an official charity. I just do what I can.

Sam-

I was working with a similar project in Ethiopia last year, some 30 refurbished desktop computers and accessories for a school in a rural market town.

One of the major hurdles we encountered was getting the computers through customs without excessive charges. I hope you have people in-country that can walk through the necessary paperwork.

We eventually succeeded and now the computer lab is fully functional, and we even got the satellite dish operational again!

Great dance at Stroud Ceilidhs with 422 BTW. I have never seen so many dancers applaud a dance for so long. Wish I could remember the name of it.
