ADD: Normal (Martin Mull)

02 Aug 99 - 12:44 AM (#101449)
Subject: Why Don't You and I get Normal?
From: Lonesome EJ

Back in the mid-seventies, Martin Mull had a song with the above title. It was hilarious, and I would love to have the lyrics. I remember this verse:

" Why don't you and I get normal?
It don't have to be that formal
We'll just sit and watch tv like others do
We'll eat meat and mashed potatuhs
Cut our hair so folks don't hate us
Life is nuts enough just living here with you
Living here with you and Bobby Magoo"

Any help gratefully appreciated, LEJ

Hi, LeeJ,

I found the cd which has it on it. It's called just "Normal" on the cd and there is a short audio clip; sounds like a great song. Here's where it was at: Mulling It Over: A Musical

Thats: http://cdu2.cduniverse.com/asp/albuminfo.asp?LC=7999+82178&cart=82191857&qs=

Hope this helps.

If any of you remember The Great American Dream Machine on PBS in the late Sities, you may remember what I think is the earliest television performances of Marty Mull. He contracted with WGBH to do the music for a series of shorts called Great American Heroes. The subjects included Big Daddy Roth (and his outrageous motorcycle designs), Banana Nose Covello (the roller derby queen), Evel Knievel, and a couple of others I don't remember. They songs, done in his C&W style were gems. Ron Finley was the producer but then Ron disappeared into the wilds of LA where he is supposedly very successful doing commercials.

I found a bit more in sound samples:

Well, I'm tired of rockin' and rollin'
Let's get married, honey. Let's go bowlin'.
Throw away our pot and acid,
Spend a weekend at Lake Placid.
[It's] too hard to live in this town if you're strange.
What say you and I get normal for a change?
What say you and I get normal?
It don't have to be that formal.
[We'll] just sit and watch TV like others do.

Best places to find sound samples are:
Yahoo! Music
Barnes & Noble
amazon.com
--in that order of preference, in my opinion.

When the song you're looking for is a common word like "Normal", the problem is that you get TOO MANY results. They will find any song that has the word "normal" in the title. It might be easier to find the album first, if you know it (and if you don't, try the artist) and then follow the links to the song.

I have the "LP" with this track, if it's of any use to anybody I'm quite willing to post the lyric.

So... I'll have to say... I was inspired by this to take a look around at the music of Martin Mull... I mean, Mudcatters mentioned him favourable, and I'd heard others say his songs were funny... So maybe I should check into it right?

Well, I gotta ask...

Where's the humour? I've heard funnier autopsies....

I know the words. Here they are. I find it very hard to know if you've been given them already or not when all people submit is a link. If anyone reads this - please specify what information your link provides so the rest of us know whether to give what we know too.

Clean Supper: Thanks for supplying the lyrics and chords -- but I'm a bit puzzled by your comment at the beginning. I thought I was clear that I was only giving Open Mike some pointers about where to find sound samples. And Kat was clear that the site she linked to contained only "a short audio clip." (The clip has apparently disappeared since she posted that message.) What more information do you want? And can't you follow the link yourself if you're not sure?

Here's how I play it. This is how I hear the version I first heard from Peterborough's Catfish Willie.

Normal    Martin Mull

[C] Why'd we have to get so hip? [F] Why'd we have to take that trip?
Honey [C] you look dumb in dungarees, so do [G7] I.
So [C] go put on your [C7] nicest dress and [F] I'll put on a [Cdim] tie
Here's [G7] why:

I'm [C] tired of rock 'n'[C7] rollin', let's get [F] married Honey let's go [C] bowling,
Throw away our pot and [A] acid, spend the [D7] weekend at Lake [G7] Placid,
Too [C] hard to live in [C7] this town if you're [F] strange, [Cdim]
What say [C] you and [A] I get [D7] normal [G7] for a [C] change. [F] [C]

What say you and I get [C7] normal, we don't [F] have to be that [C] formal,
Just sit and watch T[A]V like others [D7] do, [G7]
We'll eat [C] meat and mashed po[C7]taters, cut our [F] hair so folks won't [Cdim] hate us,
Life is [C] nuts e[A]nough just [D7] livin' [G7] here with [C] you [F] [C]

Let's see [C] who can be the most [C7] borin' you do the [F] dishes Honey I'll start [C] snorin',
Get a mower do some [A] mowin' spend all [D7] mornin' gettin' it [G7] goin'
Show [C] everyone in [C7] town we're not de[F]ranged, [Cdim]
What say [C] you and [A] I get [D7] normal [G7] for a [C] change. [F] [C]

What say you and I get [C7] normal, we don't [F] have to be real [C] formal,
Just sit and watch T[A]V like others [D7] do, [G7]
We'll eat [C] meat and mashed po[C7]taters, cut our [F] hair so folks won't [Cdim] hate us,
Life is [C] nuts e[A]nough just [D7] livin' [G7] here with [C] you [F] [C]

   [F] It's gonna [G7] change us Honey, [C] sexually,
   [A] From now [D7] on, we'll [G7] just be "once a [C] weekers,[C7]
   [F] It's gonna [G7] change us Honey, even [C] music'ly,
[A] We'll get our [D7] records through the mail and get a [G7] set of lousy speakers

Now [C] if you will beg my [C7] pardon I'm goin' [F] out to plant a [C] garden,
It'll just be small po[A]taters, some zuc[D7]chinis and to[G7]maters,
And if [C] anything comes [C7] up we've made the [F] grade, [Cdim]
What say [C] you and [A] I get [D7] normal [G7] for a [C] change. [F] [C]

Wikipedia sez,

"The Grange, officially named The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, is a social organization in the United States that encourages families to band together to promote the economic and political well-being of the community and agriculture."
