£2.50 for a singers' night!
Is this standard practice, or just in Yorkshire?
How much do other clubs charge?

£2.50 at Herga for a singers' night (£2 for members). Still less than the cost of a pint, so I don't see it as excessive. I know some clubs charge less (and others more), but every club cuts its cloth according to their environment and objectives.

Good news that a new club is starting, and any new venture is worth supporting, but could someone supply further details please - ie (esp.) contact details for organiser, membership criteria etc?

17th Feb guest is Bruce Michael Baillie adm £4.50
3rd Mar guest is Berkana (trio) adm £5 members, £6 non members
17th Mar guest is Kieran Halpin £8 members, £9 non-members.
7th April is singers night £2.50 members, £3.50 non-members.

Floor singers always welcome.

Hope this clears up any confusion.
Regards.

Thanks, that clears up the potential dates confusion at least, Keith.

But it's most unlike a club organiser not to post one's contact details.
I'm sure there will be other things folks will need to know about the new club... so it would be really helpful if you could do so please (an email address would be fine if you'd rather not leave your phone number - I realise you're unable to send a PM if you're a Guest!).
Cheers!

Let's get this thread back to Morley now then please - still waiting on your contact details Keith.

And before Wednesday can you tell us - is the Regency Ballroom licensed, or is it a bring-yer-own-beer jobbie?
And what's the parking situation like around there?

Sorry Leadfingers but thanks for trying to help out. Jimmy's useful link takes you to the Filofolk page, correct, but the landline phone number on that page belongs to the Drovers club entry on 27th, not the Morley club on 17th.

Moorley Man I'm impressed with your persistence and depressed at my lack of forethought!
Is there a bar? Is the pope a catholic!! Wot!! Course there is.
Johns was £2.10 a pint last time I looked.

Parking: Extensive at Morrisons car park on the other side of the town hall. Good in Albion Street itself, carry on past the 1st road junction then immeadiate right and your in it. (The car park that is).

My contact details: keith.morleyfolk@btinternet.com

many thanks for your persistence

But seriously, many thanks to you Keith, for your own persistence in the face of adversity caused by my annoying habit of persisting!
No apology necessary, friend!

I am looking forward to the trip across to Morley - and will definitely try to make your inaugural (have I spelt it right?) night.

Cheers,

There was a lovely turn out at Keith Brown's new club in Morley last night (about 50 of us), and plenty of excellent floor singers. Bruce Michael Baillie did a great night for us, full of his usual humour, with a smattering of serious songs.

So that you can find it more easily for the next session - on the 1st Wednesday in March (the club is always going to meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays in the month), the sign above the door to the street says the Albion Chambers. It is on Albion Street, on left as you walk from the corner (Barclays Bank is on the corner of Queen Street and Albion Street), on the opposite side of the road to the Oxfam Charity Shop.

Just to repeat that said above, plenty of free parking in Morrison's car park. Walking from the carpark, you go through the tunnel and Albion Street is straight in front of you, cross over the street onto the left hand side and you are almost there.

There, you've no excuse for not finding it and going if you are in the vicinity.

Cheers, Sylvia and Keith

Slight Change of progreamme for 3rd March. Berkana cannot appear due to illness. Barry Smith has kindly stepped in to fill the gap.

Because of the drop from trio to single artist, door prices are dropped similarly to : Members £3.50, non-members £4.50. Membership is £2.

Sorry about the late change, these things sometimes happen.

Sue Burgess and Paul Wrigley are the booked guests on 5th May. Very good 2 part harmony singing and some accompanied songs with guitar or dulcimer. Mainly trad material. New duo starting to make impressions, See Jim Lawton's review in Tykes News. Sue has an impressive pedigree as an unaccompanied singer with Bob Bray and Regal Slip amongst others. Paul is a bit more of a mongrel, he also peforms as one half of The Friendly Visit. Recent bookings have included Otley Folk Club and Skipton Folk Club. Come and find us, you will not be disappointed.

Hi Keith

If you would like the club to be listed in the Yorkshire Folk Arts Directory you can fill in the online form at http://www.yorkshire-folk-arts.com
It's entirely free, and if you can put together a few lines about the club I'll add it to the news page as well. (Email address at the Y.F.A. site).
Best of luck with the new venture

June 16th sees Colin Holt singer songwriter return to his home town as the
guest of Morley Folk Club.
As well as being a hugely talented guitar player, Colin is regarded as one
of the North's finest singer songwriters. He has recently supported Tom
Russell, from the States, as well as Martin Simpson and BBC 2 award winner
2009, Chris Wood.
Released in June 2009, his new album "Reminiscence Deftly Trips" is a
collection of songs about childhood and growing up in Morley, and has met
with some great reviews:

"The new album by Colin Holt, "Reminiscence Deftly Trips" is exactly that,
a piercingly sharp reflection of memory from days long gone. Colin has
written a selection of songs that touch the sentiments you thought
childhood had hidden away. He has an incisive ability to express his
feelings and to touch ours at the same time"
Tim Carroll – Folkwords

Colin is really looking forward to performing back in his home town, and
hopes to see you all there

We have changed venue again, we are now at the Morley United Services Club and we have changed our night to first and third Tuesdays.

We use the concert room which is a decent size but we are not too lost if the numbers aren't too high. (So far we have been very well attended).

We also have the option of moving into the cozy lounge if bad weather keeps the numbers away.

Our website remains www.morleyfolk.org and we have a lively Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MorleyFolkClub
