Not much info out right now, but the commander of Canada's largest airforce base has been charged with 2 counts of 1st degree murder in the death of 2 women!

Just what every country's Armed Forces needs.

It's bad. He is being charged with killing two women and sexually assaulting two others. Meantime, they are searching into his other postings re: unsolved murders and rapes.
He was a well respected and popular leader.
So sorry, guys. What a messy business.

I do not see this as reflecting bad on the military....murders could come from any profession.

I agree, Ed. The problem is that this man was chosen for many plum assignments - greeting the Prime Minister, for instance. If it turns out he is a mass murderer, it is at best awkward for a lot of people. If it were in the US there would be immediate accusations of a cover up.

If he's guilty, I hope they nail his ass to a wall.

It's those silly green uniforms that they have to wear...bring back the Royal Canadian Air Force, that's what I say.

The picture I saw him in (newspaper) he was wearing a blue Canada Air force Uniform.

The Chief of the Defence Staff, General Walt Natynczyk, was just on all the Canadian news services live from 8 Wing Trenton to say that the entire Canadian Forces is reeling with this news, and Colonel Russell Williams has been relieved of his command. He also said that civilians are spontaneously approaching Air Force folks to offer sympathy.

Two of my colleagues recently served with Col Williams; in fact, one was deployed with him and worked closely with him every day for six months. Everyone is struggling to come to terms with information that just keeps getting more distressing.

This case is unique in Canadian history. Col Williams is the first officer in the history of the Canadian armed services to be accused of murder in the death of an individual under his command. As a member of 437 Squadron, part of 8 Wing, Corporal Marie-France Comeau was one of Col Williams' people. She had also served with 412 Squadron, the transport unit that flies VIPs around in Challenger jets. On top of all the other charges, especially the death of Ms Lloyd, that makes the case even more macabre -- if that were possible.

According to the Globe and Mail, a usually reliable news source, Col Williams has already confessed to several of the offences.

Sorry; I left out a word in my post above. I meant to say that both Col Williams and Cpl Comeau had served in 412 Sqn. As yet, it is not known whether they were in 412 Sqn at the same time.

We lived in Trenton for six years when I was a lad. My bro married a lass from Belleville (close to CFB Trenton) who knows of the victims families. Apparently, unsolved crimes which occured at other bases during hes past postings are also being reopened. Kinda like a soap on TV... so sad.

Something else from Gen Natynczyk: an e-mail to the entire Canadian Forces and the Department of National Defence saying -- among other things -- that any of us who comes into any contact with this investigation is to co-operate to the utmost. The message just came in on my office BlackBerry.

I was speaking to a retired navy friend this morning in Nova Scotia and asked his thoughts. He paused for a bit then said that he had no words to describe his feelings. He then said in a way he felt lost.

Of all the songs Phil wrote (that I've heard), I love this one most.

"There But For Fortune"

Show me a prison, show me a jail
Show me a pris'ner whose face has grown pale
And I'll show you a young man
With many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I

Show me an alley, show me a train
Show me a hobo who sleeps out in the rain
And I'll show you a young man
With many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I

Show me the whiskey stains on the floor
Show me a drunk as he stumbles out the door
And I'll show you a young man
With many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I

Show me a country where the bombs had to fall
Show me the ruins of buildings so tall
And I'll show you a young land
With many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I
You or I

In the course of my life I've met many military poeople, and they have been honourable, good, well-meaning people with a healthy dose of fortitude and often courage. This officer will not disgrace the military. Just himself. I hope our men and women wearing the uniform know that the rest of Canada is in your corner. One robin doth not a spring make, nor does one bad person undermine our faith in you.

Thanks, 999. Much appreciated.

As for Bubblyrat, what a guy! He does his best to inject a note of levity into a discussion of a case involving the death of two young women and the sexual assault of two others. What a planet has he been on for the last 23 years or so? That's about how long the Canadian Forces have had distinctive Army, Navy and Airforce uniforms.

I doubt it will affect the Forces' operational performance, but it is a lead-sheathed downer and certainly won't help recruiting or retention. I am shocked and dismayed by the apparent betrayal of the trust that has to exist between a commander and his command.

A Canadian officer's commission opens, "We reposing especial Trust and Confidence in your Loyalty, Courage and Integrity...." If the allegations are true, how could this person shave without slitting his throat?

Sorry, I have been living on "Planet Civvy Street " since 1974,actually.I remember,in the 1970s,the RCAF, the RCN,and the Canadian Army all merged together to form one combined "Defence Force", and they all wore weird green uniforms that made them look like cinema commissionaires,or hotel door-keepers.If they have reverted to service-related uniform colours, then Hey !! That's great !! But-----do they call themselves the Canadian Navy,or the Canadian Army,or the Canadian Air Force, or are they still a homogenised ( and anonymous) "Defence Force " ??? (I hope not !).

Bubblyrat, why don't you use your Internet browser to good effect and find out for yourself? I suggest you start with the Canada's Air Force
site.
