15 Feb 10 - 12:58 PM (#2840044) Subject: Pacific NW Songs online From: Stewart The Pacific Northwest Folklore Society has a new web page featuring Pacific Northwest Songs Each song features a mp3 or video, lyrics, a picture and background information. This is a new project to collect and present songs that directly relate to the history, people and places of the Pacific NW. Several mudcatters are featured here: songs by Mary Garvey (mg) and Matt Moeller (chantymatt), singing by Bob Nelson (Deckman) and myself (Stewart) among others. We welcome any comments and suggestions. Cheers, S. in Seattle |

15 Feb 10 - 02:04 PM (#2840116) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: mousethief Excellent idea and well executed! Makes me proud to be a PNW folkie. My suggestions for additional songs: Any of the Woody Guthrie songs about the Columbia and other rivers would be welcome. I don't know how "folkie" counts as folk or how far NW counts as PNW but there's an excellent song sung by Gordon Bok ("The Wreck of the Green Cove") about hauling logs out of Vancouver BC -- I love to hear it and sing it because I've actually sailed most of the route they took. O..O =o= |
15 Feb 10 - 02:09 PM (#2840121) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: GUEST,mg i THINK the problem with some of the songs you mentioned would be copywrite but perhaps someone could address this or Stewart and Bob could say if they are only looking for songs that people either wrote themselves or gave express permission too..I am not sure of these preferences. mg |
15 Feb 10 - 02:36 PM (#2840142) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: Stewart Mary, most of the songs posted so far are either in the public domain with permission of the singer, original songs with permission of the author and singer, or tracks of songs that have been released on CD with permission of the producer of the CD. We can't, of course, rip songs off CDs without permission, or post original songs without permission of the author and singer. If we make a mistake and someone objects, we will certainly remove the song from our web site (much like mudcat does). Any submissions we would consider have to relate directly to the Pacific NW - its history, people, and places. Those submitting songs should check and explain any copyright and permission issues. Copyright issues also pertain to pictures, although these may be harder to define. Most from Wikipedia are either in the public domain or under "Creative Commons licenses." And photos from US Government agencies are in the public domain. We can't afford to pay any copyright or licensing fees. We view this as a free sharing of songs where everyone agrees. 15 Feb 10 - 08:39 PM (#2840517) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: Genie Great site, Stewart. It does seem to be a bit heavily loaded on Washington so far, with a bit of BC thrown in, but maybe we can get some Oreganos to contribute (and does Idaho count too?). I can think of a few other NW artists who could make great additions to the site, including Kate Power and Steve Einhorn, the late Jinx Davis, Bill Murlin & Sandy Bly, Linda Waterfall, Matt Price, William Pint and Felicia Dale, Jonathan Lay, Meryle Korn, Jim Portillo, Flip Breskin and Zeke Hoskin,* Bruce Baker, and Betsy Wellings. I hope the site will continue to grow and expand. Genie *"Walla Walla Waltz" really should be incuded! And, heck, even our own California boy Amos wrote a blues for MAG called "Walla Walla Woman Blues!" |
16 Feb 10 - 10:15 AM (#2840860) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: Charley Noble Stewart- So would you welcome a set of Cicely Fox Smith poems recently adapted for singing, set in the Pacific Northwest? They are certainly not traditional songs but since they were composed in the early 1900's, they provide rich detail of what the world was like in Victoria, Vancouver, Steveston Village, and off Cape Flattery. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
16 Feb 10 - 11:26 AM (#2840929) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Stewart, et al: I have not been privileged to spend much time in your region in recent years, but the greater Seattle area in particular, and the great northwest in general has always contained a great trove of regional song and story and wonderful artists through whom to interpret same. Thanks for this marvelous opportunity to share it. I didn't see Nancy Quense's name - she was a favorite of mine many years ago and, I understand, is still very active. |
16 Feb 10 - 12:38 PM (#2841006) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: GUEST,mg I would love to see the Oregon stuff..I was thinking perhaps someone from Oregon could contactfamilies of Jinx Davis and Becky Berenson and get some of their classics..especially Becky's "Roll Willamette Roll." Should be some Alaska stuff too and Montana..perhaps Alaska Mike can contribute one of his..and of course BC...and CA. mg |

16 Feb 10 - 02:04 PM (#2841085) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: Charlie Baum I don't know if Idaho counts, but if it does, you could visit the website of The Idaho Songs Project. The Songs of the Month page has some gems from the Gem State, and at least a couple of them cross the border into Oregon or Washington. --Charlie Baum |
16 Feb 10 - 03:55 PM (#2841211) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: Genie Stewart, your post at top doesn't say the songs have to be "trad" or even old. There are some really funny parodies and silly songs about the Pac NW that have been written fairly recently. I'd think they'd fit in well. |
16 Feb 10 - 04:08 PM (#2841225) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: Don Firth Right, Genie! What immediately popped into mind are some of the songs written in a fit of whimsey by the infamous John Dwyer. Among other things, he worked over the ferry system pretty good! Don Firth |
16 Feb 10 - 04:10 PM (#2841227) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: GUEST,mg Wes Wedell has written a number of wonderful songs..in fact, I think he spent some time going around the state and finding songs to write. mg |

16 Feb 10 - 04:53 PM (#2841266) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: Deckman Please erase the above comment ... I pushed to the wrong button ... AGAIN. I meant to say ... I think I've lived long enough that I'm going to be going through my 5th "FOLKSCARE" ... at least as it pertains to the Pacific Northwest. There are monumental efforts and events on the horizon. Bob(deckman)Nelson |
16 Feb 10 - 05:45 PM (#2841329) Subject: RE: Pacific NW Songs online From: Stewart A few responses to the above posts: The songs don't necessarily need to be trad or old They can be more recent or newly composed But they should directly relate to the PNW Songs that tell a story (ballads) are best Yes, I'd consider Idaho and Montana as PNW Alaska and Oregon, of course as well as Washington and BC Charley Nobel - I think one of your C. Fox Smith songs would be fine, as it relates to the PNW I'd rather have songs sung by regional singers Doesn't have to be a polished singer, but should be fairly well done. You don't have to record with studio or CD quality - a good mp3 recording is fine or a youtube-type video (mpeg-4 format preferred) I can only work on a few submissions per week. so don't flood me with multiple submissions. Depending on how many I receive, be patient, it may take a while to post them. And I will make the final decision. The list will grow slowly. You will have to do your own recording or obtain recordings from others (with their permission) include the lyrics, a photo and as much background info as you can, and as much copyright information as you can, and permissions. You can PM me on mudcat or contact me via the PNWFS web page. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
