Thanks MANITAS AT WORK!
I checked the thread, and now am just as confused, but in a larger way!
I will stick with Laylum, cos that's how my Dad sang it with Rumbylowe!
Cheers m'dears!

I can remember sorting out this one before (Leyland) when people were asking what the hell a Laylum is.

Hopefully, someone will come along and post the link soon and we'll all be able to go back to sleep or sing real words again instead of misheard ones (mondegreens).

;-)

OK, I found it ...

I like to hear the small birds singing
merrily upon the ley land.

The skylark, in particular - but not exclusuvely, likes to nest in meadows - ley land - put to grass.

And it doesn't sing as well. Nor is it small. "I like to hear the corncrake singing" - Hmmm, does not compute. Hi Dick.

GSS/Doc.Tom - As in

"Meet me Molly in the dell
In the cooling evening breeze
Where the corncrake's voice is heard
In the meadow by the Tees
When thy daily work is o'er
Come and take a walk with me
Sweetest hours of my life
Are the few I spend with thee"

The Revels sing it......         "I like to hear them small birds singing, merrily among their lay-lows."    Different, but no help in meaning.          Seems to imply low bushes. Need an English colloquial specifically regional expert.

Same origin as Scots "lea rig", as in the song of that name.
