18 Feb 10 - 11:52 AM (#2843197) Subject: Anglo concertina & guitar - 3 videos From: Will Fly For those who like concertina music, Alan Day and I have recorded three videos from our repertoire for Anglo concertina and acoustic guitar. They are: Rosbif Waltz Moonlight Hop & La Luna Dins L'Aiga Manor Royal March & March "Moonlight Hop" and "Manor Royal" are compositions by Alan. The "Moonlight Hop/La Luna" pairing is distinguished by my reading from the chord book (oh horrors!) - but, please sir, I didn't have time to do my homework... Incidentally, the little glances and smiles indicate two things: (a) Alan is hoping I'll forget the chords and (b) I'm doing my best to make him corpse. Luckily, neither of us succeeded. |

It sounded like a good name for a triumphant march. Rosbif Waltz was originally performed by a group called "Paris Centre" and the tune was collected by Mel Stevens, who was later to form the group "Rosbif".Mel and I first recorded this tune on a Rosbif record called "Traditional Dance Music from Central France" it is also featured on "Anglo International". Thank you guys ! You have prooven I was right all the time - I only hope I will be spared the torment listening to concertina and piano again - it can only mean a failure in comparison to your tasteful performance. |

Al's first production was the 3-CD box set "Anglo International", which featured historic and modern players of the Anglo system concertina from all over the world. The next production was "English International" - a similar box set, but dedicated to players of the English system concertina. The one in the offing is dedicated to players of the Duet system concertina. Now, if that hasn't thoroughly confused you, here's my explanation of the 3 systems (and remember I'm only a very amateur Anglo player): 1. Anglo. Two or three rows of buttons on each side, going from low notes (on the left side) to high notes (on the right side). Usually pitched in 2 keys, such G/D or C/F. The essential bit is that each button gives you different notes when pushed and pulled - equivalent to the suck/blow notes of a harmonica. 2. English. Usually with 4 vertical rows of buttons on each side - arranged chromatically with different notes of the scale on each side and with accidentals on the outer rows. The same note is sounded on the push and the pull. 3. Duet. Also with rows of button - but with the same notes on each side, and the the same notes sounding on the push and the pull. Capable of playing complex chords. I'm sure other players will explain this much better than me. All systems are interesting. My personal feeling is that the different push and pull notes on the Anglo system make it a tricksy little instrument - and Al is master of it. So - no recordings of our duets just yet - but we'll be doing something soon... :-) |

Just trying to make it clear (and not very well) that the "duets" Al and I play are not "duet" concertinas but musical duets. I've been interested to see, on my own forum, that most of the members - being mainly guitar players and mainly American - were not really au fait with the concertina, and certainly not aware of the different systems. So I was being a bit pedantic - and inaccurate! |
