From another site.

Canadian Music Icon, Gordon Lighfoot has died.

Lightfoot who played Sault Ste. Marie last year and who's career has span over 6 decades passed away today confirms a friend close to the singer songwriter.

Gordon Lightfoot was born on November 17, 1938 in Orillia, Ontario, Canada. His parents recognized and encouraged his interest in music; his first appearance At Massey Hall in Toronto, now a revered standard in his tour schedule, was just before he turned 13, as the winner of a competition for boys with unchanged voices according to a published biography on the entertainer.

James Adams

Toronto — Globe and Mail Update Published on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010 3:05PM EST

Bernie Fielder, Gordon Lightfoot's long-time friend, some-time publicist and road manager, said at 2:40 p.m. ET that the singer-songwriter was very much alive and in Toronto. Indeed, he claimed Lightfoot's secretary had spoken with the artist "just a half-an-hour ago."

Mr. Fiedler claimed in a phone conversation that the death report was "a prank" originating as "a Twitter coming out of Ottawa." He indicated a media release might be issued soon putting the rumour of Mr. Lightfoot's death to rest.

Mr. Fiedler also has been Lightfoot's concert promoter and tour organizer.

In other words, it's just as bogus as the similarly unfounded rumours about Chongo's death which were spread recently on this forum by Amos. People who spread these kind of rumours should definitely be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment...such as being thrown naked into a pit of famished miniature Dachshunds.

I doubt Gordon would respond in person, but should he elect to do so, I assume his response might be "Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated," a la Mark Twain.

Why do people engage in this macabre stuff? Is it for Andy Warhol's "thirty minutes of fame?" Bad show.

Little Hawk:

More perfervidf rhetoric!! You know perfectly well the story of Chongo demise by explosion of an IED outside of Kandahar was merely a report of the best information available at the time, necessarily qualified by the fog of war. No-one knew at the time he had escaped by hiding in a culvert and then easily disguising himself as a mangy camel.

So some moron "twitters" some nonsense, and our major Canadian newspapers jump all over it, without so much as picking up the phone .... My faith in the media establishment grows by leaps and bounds daily:

The National Post and other Canwest newspaper websites including the Vancouver Sun, Ottawa Citizen, Montreal Gazette and Calgary Herald all erroneously reported today that Lightfoot was dead, quoting his longtime friend Ronnie Hawkins.

Now, the Post is attributing the report to an Internet hoax that was started on Twitter, reportedly by someone from Ottawa.

CP24.com has traced the story back to Canwest political reporter David Akin, who "made a well-circulated post on Twitter that the singer had died, quoting anonymous sources close to Lightfoot."

It's another result of the news cycle tightening down. It used to be 24 hours, you would learning the news ever 24 hours when you got the paper or watched the evening news.

Then came the morning news and the news cycle shrank to a (lopsided) twelve hours.

Then came around-the-clock CNN, and the news cycle was shortened to 10 to 15 minutes.

Then with twitters and Facebook and so on, the news cycle is constant. Any given news story can be picked up and published instantly in hundreds of "respectable" outlets (and thousands not so respectable).

So when a news outlet gets a story they have to decide very rapidly whether to go with it or get scooped. Which leads them to make not-entirely-well-advised decisions. If the story is real we want to be first off the line with it. Can we afford the time to check it out and make sure it's real? Nah. Let's just roll with it.

And most of the time it works. But with twitter &c., it's going to become less and less so, and we'll get more and more of these little embarrassments.

O..O
=o=

Little embarrassments are one thing - trouble is, some of the nonsense they're so quick to report has long-lasting political and social effects. For instance, if certain reputable news sources report, "Moslem father kills daughter because she refuses to wear hijab", and two days later say, "Um, well, there was a little more to the story than that, and maybe we shouldn't have based our entire report on what the first kid that came out of her school that day told us", all anyone seems to remember years later is the original version ... (actual case, by the way) ....

Amergin - You'd be surprised how sharp their teeth are and how very strong their jaws are too. Miniature Dachshunds, that is. They can deliver a very nasty bite. I fear that a pit full of them would prove quite deadly, provided they were sufficiently aroused.

he did have a close call a few years back that caused him to slow down and not perform for a couple of years....he was rushed to a hospital either during or after a show in Orillia , if memory serves me right..here are the details..
In 2002 a near-fatal medical emergency left Lightfoot in a coma for six weeks. In November of 2004, In November, he made his long-awaited return to the concert stage with two sold-out benefit shows in Hamilton, Ontario. On September 14, 2006, while in the middle of a performance, Lightfoot suffered a minor stroke that eventually left him without the use of the middle and ring fingers on his right hand. He returned to performing nine days later and for a brief time used a substitute guitarist for more difficult guitar work. Since early 2007, however, Lightfoot has regained full use of his right hand and plays all of the guitar parts in concert as he originally wrote them. He has continued to perform well into 2009.

While a tour was being planned for 2008, Lightfoot's manager, Barry Harvey, died at age 56 on 4 December 2007. In late 2009, Lightfoot undertook a 26 city tour.

Hi lizzie

Many thanks for you link to Gordon's Song for a Winter Night.

I have it on vinyl !!! somewhere - I do have most of Gordon's stuff on CD's as well so I am not totally ancient....lol

I saw Gordon live a couple of times way back when he toured over here in the UK.

I rate him highly and on that tour he had Red Shea with him on guitar. Red ,who I only found out the other day from another Gordon thread here at Mudcat, passed away in 2007.

My own particular favourite of Gordon's is Canadian Railroad Trilogy.

I always liked Paul McCartney's response when asked about rumors of his death. He said "I'm sure if it were true I'd be the last one to know about it."
Another favorite response was after Carey Grant was reported to have died. His studio recieved a telegram saying "how old Carey Grant?" To which Grant had them reply "Old Carey Grant fine. How you?"
