BS: No thoughts about Tiger Woods?

I thought there would be a thread by now.

(or have I short-sightedly overlooked it?)

His 'apology' was the lead item on BBC News yesterday, which given the state of the economy and continuing wars is pretty shocking.

He's a man who has had an affair. What's new? It happens.

It's tat. Old tat at that

Considering what is happening in the real world it's hardly newsworthy save those who like a good gossip and to see celebrities implode. But celebrities are only human too, with human needs and weaknesses. Same as politicians, etc etc. Why does it still surprise people?

Move along please: nothing to see here

None of my business. With all the strife in the world why should we care who he is involved with? He has been front page news more often than some serious stuff. The media play to the prurient interests of the people who have no life of their own. Pathetic I say.

I Agree with Kendall None of my business, maybe his wife should have take better care in the first place ..............

what is wrong in a relationship when either or both partners
go and see other s to have their needs fullfill ?

hummm .......is it becouse they have lost ..the connection
or are they growin apart ...

we don´t know ... like Kendall said there are more matter than this

I completely agree that this is not the most important topic. But the residents of Planet Mudcat often want to discuss topics of a similar 'level' of significance and I wondered why this one was overlooked.

Maybe just for once, we've all decided that

a) It's a personal matter between him and his wife
b) In the great scheme of things it is monumentally unimportant.
c) Nobody would even notice if he were the world's best taxi driver, or bricklayer, instead of golfer, so why bother hounding him to destruction.

I'm seriously hoping that the above is true, and that we can leave the poor bastard to pick up the pieces in private.

My thoughts on Tiger Woods -

As golf is one of the few televised sports I enjoy watching is to wish this excellent player a speedy return to the game he has excelled at and whose skill it has been a pleasure to watch.

My thoughts on the coverage in the media and elsewhere -

Unfortunately, the touring involved with such a career means that such professionals will spend far too much time away from family and home and their athlete / celebrity status will make them exceptionally attractive to many women adding up to many opportunities for adultery

This is NOT to blame women for 'men who stray' - whether that is some media fantasy of 'hot groupies' or assuming some 'failure' on the part of a wife and mother of two children unable or unwilling to share the pressure of so much touring - neither should it make Tiger Woods into some kind of crazed 'sex addict'

This article opens up some other (less headline grabbing) insights……

It's like saying "I don't like shit sprinkles on my breakfast cereal, but I thought YOU would, so I started this thread (Called 'No thoughts about shit sprinkles?'."

If you don't have anything to say, feel free to not say it often.

Smedley, it wasn't you. There seems to be a lot of 'news' networks that think people are interested enough to watch hours of reporting on a stranger's sex life. What I find truly appalling is that enough people ARE interested to keep them doing it.

When I stand in line at the grocery store and my groceries are rung up, there is a display of magazines and tabloids telling me exactly who did what to whom, and how often, and whether she let him come back after sleeping with her, and who left the other guy, and why the baby had to stay at Grandmama's.

I don't know any of these people (except for having seen them last time I went to the store) and have no interest whatever in their private lives.

I've heard of Tiger Woods. I have just as little interest in his private life.

As *I* grow older, I am more & more fascinated by games and activities in which individual compete in ways that do NOT involve other individuals trying to prevent them from their goal.
I do NOT find golf...or mountain climbing, or ski jumping... boring. Being able to figure out ways to hit that tiny ball hundreds of yards under constantly changing conditions is an amazing skill, and Tiger is one of the best at it. I'd like to see how far his GOLFING abilities can go.

He let temptations and easy access to them overwhelm him, but unless he is charged with a crime, I'd like to see how his golfing career will develop. What I will have opinions about are the inevitable remarks and harassments he will be subjected to if & when he resumes playing golf in public.

If you don't play golf then you will rarely if ever watch it. Unlike other games, probably 80% of golf is played in your head.....at least that's what my Ol Man said. My Dad loved the game and was a superb golfer. There are courses around Ohio where the course record is 60 years old and they are held by W.J. Patterson. Many wanted him to turn pro but you didn't give up a good job back in the forties to go play golf. I started playying at age seven with a few cutdown clubs and in high school was 5-8 handicap. Dad had quit playing regularly because of back problems but he still shot par almost every round. I played very little after high school with the exception of a few periods of time, but I still enjoy watching a pro play the game.

I preface here with those remarks because what made this such a huge story was of course related to sex and an out of control media coupled with our voyeur-like interest and other things you have all mentioned. Many other stories like this one have been out there before but this one really went to overkill. Why?

I submit that had the guy played something else it would have been yet another Kobe Bryant story taking up too much space but about the same as many others. No, what made this one different is Golf. Nobody talks much about it, but the real hook here is golf. From football to tennis, all of the major televised sports has been involved in some kind of huge scandal about drugs or sex or both. Golf has had some minor things over the years that barely registered on the radar.

Jack Nicklaus was the All-American boy and Arnie was the greenskeeper's kid from Pennsylvania. Ben Hogan was probably one helluva prick but his comeback after the car accident made him a legend. Sam Snead, Ken Venturi, Byron Nelson, and on back to Bobby Jones, none of these guys had much negative press let alone a scandal. Tony Lema could have been close but it didn't happen.

Tiger made it happen. And when the press heard about it, they licked their chops and dove right in for a seven course meal......with a "seconds" buffet. This one had all the reqisite sports star goes wrong elements but it was in a sport where this kind of thing never happened. How would it affect golf?

Almost every report on this always alludes somewhere in it to how golf will be affected. Tiger did bring large numbers of new folks, often kids and their parents, into the game and I know the question is legitimate. On the other hand, I'm sick of hearing about it and so it seems are quite a few pro golfers. They're tired of talking about Tiger the jackass and very little else. They'd like to have him back simply to get back to the game as opposed to where Tiger left his dick last night.

So if Tiger's apology hastens the process of returning some normalcy to golf for them, I am all for it times ten.   I like golf and I don't give a particular shit about Woods.....except when I'm in them or they have a number on the bottom.

Spaw

What irritates me is when any public official, sports, actors, politicians...and so on, get caught with their pants down...they all cry, apologise, and say it wasn't really their fault because they are addicted to sex...and go to a "rehab" to get it cured...

They do this instead of owning up to their misdeeds. And the media (and because the media does, the public as well) gets on their collective knees and swallows it all.

Actually, what Don T. posted at 20 Feb 10 - 07:22 a.m. pretty much reflects my feelings on the matter.

Golf is a game in which on puts a ball about an inch and a half in diameter on a ball approximately 8,000 miles in diameter, and the object is to take a club and hit the little ball without hitting the big ball.

I can't say that I think about Tiger Woods much at all.
