The album was released in the UK on the CBS label ( the British title for Columbia Records). Now, it wasn't until years after the release of the album that I became aware of its true significance. By the mid-sixties Columbia Records had not - amazingly - got into the rock music market although a number of their artists had moved into rock after being signed as folk music artists ( Dylan for example). By 1967 the company was facing an uncertain future so executive Clive Davies was put in charge of - quickly - creating a rock music catalogue. The Rock Machine album was part of the big push to launch their newly acquired rock artists. |

It was a time of good compilations if I remember - there was also an excellent one called 'This is Soul'. I was at school at the time and we had a school record club and several full albums were purchased off the back of it (and the follow up) - Notorius Byrd Brothers, John Wesley Harding, Spirit (with track that Led Zep nicked for Stairway to Heaven), Roy Harper, Songs of Leonard Cohen, couple of Simon and Garfunkel albums, Super Session with Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills, Cheap Thrills. Did it's job. |

The combination of Blues and soul, West Coast US music, rock and singer/songwriters (+ classical, folk and jazz which came from elsewhere) have been my main areas of musical interest and influence since those days. |

I still need to write some extra verses to "Dance in the smoke" for Knockholt. The estimable Leopards did some verses for me but they did not seem quite in the vein - the "Every branch we'll tie somebody's worries to it, we will build it and dance in the smoke" sort of feel. My other fave on it is the excruciatingly well-spoken "Come to the Sabbat". Public school rock at its best! |

From: Phil Edwards My big sister had TRMTYO and played it to death; I still know most of those songs inside out and back to front. I thought "Nobody's got..." - and Harper's crazily affected delivery of it - was the funniest thing ever, even though I couldn't make out half the words (including the rather daring punchline - "Except of course... ah-for scoring... on a sunny... day" I heard it as "the forescoring" and thought it was some weird legal terminology.) The other track that made a huge impression on me - a play-that-track-again impression (which took a bit more doing in those days) - was Fresh Garbage. For several years my ambition was to be a rock vibraphonist, so that I could play that solo. Then somebody told me it was electric piano, and for some reason that didn't inspire me in the same way. Can't have been a very effective sampler, though - I haven't got a single thing by any of the artists on the LP apart from the Byrds and Bob (and I've only got one Byrds album). |

John Peel claimed that this referred to the complexions of some of the artists featured... Good line up though - Captain Beefheart, Hapshash And The Coloured Coat, Lightnin' Hopkins, Alexis Korner, the groundhogs, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Canned Heat, Ainsley Dunbar etc. And, beyond parody, the Bonzos with "Can Blue Men Sing The Whites". |

This was where I first heard Electric Flag's "Killing Floor", "Time has come today" (Chambers Brothers), something by Spirit, etc. Several of the big record companies put out sampler LPs at the time - remember Warner/Reprise's "Loss Leader" series? And I seem to recall an Island Records sampler, as well - the first and only time I heard a band called If with their song "I'm reaching out on all sides". And Richard, thanks for reminding me of "Come Away Melinda". One of the high points of my early teens was when Uriah Heep played in our high school auditorium... |

I bought it for my brother in Woolworths for Christmas in 1970 - and kept it! Island did a great 2-lp sampler called 'Bumpers' that year which had some great stuff by Fotheringay, Fairport, Nick Drake and a wonderful song by Dave Mason called 'Little Woman' which was later covered by Mr. Fox but otherwise seems to have disappeared altogether. They both turn up on Ebay from time to time. |

From: Brian Peters I didn't have the first 'Rock Machine', but played 'Rock Machine I Love You' to death: S&G, The Byrds, Leonard Cohen, Blood Sweat & Tears, Laura Nyro, Taj Mahal - my first proper experience of American rock. And there was that weird 'My name is Jack and I live in the back of the Greta Garbo Home for wayward boys and girls....' Disturbing. Island had a good early sampler called 'Nice Enough to Eat' which managed to range from Dr. Strangely Strange to '21st Century Schizoid Man'. Free and Spooky Tooth were on it, but so too were folkier things like Fairport and Nick Drake. Didn't care much for Quintessence, though. |
