The only Railroad #2 I find is a reservoir in Arizona, but no song. I think we'll need some more information, any lines you recall, where it was sung, what it was about.

It's Rural Route #2, recorded by Barry Brown of the "Family Brown" around the year 1965 or so..Not sure of the exact year.. It flew across Canada and reched very high on the charts...t was their first song...... I played in a country dance band about then and it was our #1 requested song.... I knew it like the back of my hand but have forgotten the lyrics almost completely.. One particular line or lines I remember was..."The little Church where I knelt to pray, has closed it's doors forever so they say.. (blank blank)..."I can't believe God moved 10 miles away".... It was a bit of a protest song about how the lttle towns were gobbled up by cities.......Thanks for the try

Here's an article in The Canadian Encyclopedia about the Family Brown. It says "R.R. #2" was their first hit record in 1971. There's also an article in Wikipedia.

It says they have released 10 original albums plus 2 "greatest hits" albums, and won numerous awards.

Evidently they haven't been noticed much in the USA. Allmusic.com lists only 2 of their albums. How odd.

R.R. #2 / RURAL ROUTE 2
(Words & Music, Barry Brown)

The little village where I lived and grew
Has been renamed to RR#2
The small dot on the map is gone
How's anyone to know where he belongs

CHORUS
Oh it's sad to see the small towns disappear
Why must they change the place we hold so dear
The little church where we knelt to pray
Has closed its doors forever so they say
I can't believe God's moved ten miles away

An old man walks across the fertile land
And worries about the new highway that's planned
And he recalls when he was just a lad
How hard he worked to clear the land with his dad

From the schoolyard there isn't any sound
'Coz a schoolbus takes the kids to a larger town
And the old folks wonder where the money goes
There's nothing left for the government to close

CHORUS

The church bell now rings its death toll
And the topsoil blows off the land
And the school flag flies at half mast
And the old folks long for the past

(CHORUS repeated)

(Tag)
No, I can't believe God's moved ten miles away.

B.T.W.

These are the lyrics for R.R. #2 sent to me by the writer, Barry Brown, some years back as a result of a request I made to a CBC contact.

Hope they bring back some good memories for you.

Now, if only I could find the original song, preferably in mp3 format. If not mp3, I can convert it to mp3.

Anyone got it, by chance ???

This is not the US group The Browns who had a huge hit with "The Three Bells".

That group was Jim Ed Brown and his sisters.

Good eye, pdq. Different groups. The Family Brown is Canadian, The Browns are American.

The Three Bells is one of my all-time favourite songs.

May I say a good word for the Fox Family, the Cox Family, the Lewis Family, The Whites and The Browns.

American-made harmony singing at its finest.

Nuttin' to do with this song, so sue me.

Interesting to see comments from Q and Amos (of beloved memory) about RR#2 being about a railroad. Guess they were city boys.

When I was a traveling investigator, I hated finding addresses like RR#2, Box 178. I'm about as rural as it gets in California. We've always had a street address, but the street number has changed three times and the "City" name thrice.

Joe in Applegate California (or is it Colfax, or Weimar?? And is it US 40, or Geisendorfer Road, or Giesendorfer Road, or Leonard Lane??)

Help!! I don't know where I am, which is why I drive to the post office and get mail at a P.O. Box.
