The recordings and performances I've heard have been unaccompanied - have you considered doing it without instruments?

An idea, no I hadn't. I use an accoustic guitar. Heard it on Kathy M's
CD "Coal" I've never heard Mr. Wheeler do it, it's not on the LP i have. Mike

Judy Collins did a version with a wonderful guitar accompaniment. The Kathy Mattea recording is accompanied by guitar, bass, and violin, and it's very nice. The accompaniment on the Collins and Mattea recordings are what I'd call "understated," and thet may be why they work so well.

Priscilla Herdman did it unaccompanied, also a wonderful recording.
Sorry, but I'm not a guitarist, and can't transcribe chords for you.

I thought Judy Collins sang it unaccompanied, but of course Joe is right. I must have been thinking of the Priscilla Herdman recording. At one time it seemed to me that Herdman was on a mission to record everything Collins had ever sung (not that there's anything wrong with that).

It's also on a CD by the Australian group, Quintessence - and that one is an unaccompanied trio.

The Judy Collins Concert Elektra EKL-280
Recorded at Town Hall NY March 21,1964
Accompanied by Chuck Israels, bass and cello
Steve Mandell 2nd gutar and banjo

This album contains an accompanied version of Red-Winged Blackbird.
It also contains another 2 Billy Ed Wheeler songs, Winter Sky, and Coal Tattoo, among other songs.
It's a piece of vinyl I treasure.
