07 Mar 10 - 01:54 PM (#2858469) Subject: 3 Vids of W.Ky guitar legends (rare) From: Jayto Here are 3 videos from 2 Western Kentucky Thumbpicking legends. The first is from Mose Rager (thank you Bankley for transferring my cassette to cd on this one). Mose Rager taught Merle Travis and is regarded as the Father of Western Kentucky thumbpicking. I searched all over and couldn't find any of Mose on youtube so I put this one up Mose Rager playing Fanfare The next generation down was another picker that really had a huge influence on the sound and direction of the style. His name was Odell Martin and if you mention his name hats pretty much come off haha. He was mind blowing. He took what Mose, Ike Everly, Kennedy Jones, Arnold Schultz (Schultzy), and others did and upped the ante a few notches. His playing had a loose, Broonzy-like quality which I like very much. Odell Martin had a fantastic technique - more in the Travis style - but I find the very fast "Sugarfoot Rag" less to my taste. I never cared much for Joe Maphis's fast stuff either - and he was a player with a similar technique to Martin's. Nevertheless - great to hear these two superb players - thanks again! |

Loved Rager, esp., but I also had fun listening to Sugarfoot Rag...and I generally do not like the fast-fast stuff. How did you get your hands on Rager's guitar, if you don't mind my asking? It has the old store front in Cleaton Ky by the legendary "Cleaton Crossing" as well as the crossing itself. That is the store referenced in Guitar Rag. The last residence of Mose Rager is in it as well as the monument. The Merle Travis birth house and the marker at the s...tart of the Merle Travis highway in Ebenezer. I am pretty sure Merle is buried there I have to check but I know for sure Mose is buried in Ebenezer. There are alot of other pics in it as well. I get alot of my stuff about Mose or stuff that belonged to Mose from them. His family and I go back over 20 years and actually they consider me family as I do them.
