Yet there is a Facebook group with over 2,000 members giving the name of a scared bloke up north with details of where he is living - claiming it to be Venables. Well, doh, actually Venables has been recalled to prison so it can't be him, can it? You do have to wonder about people, really you do. |

I wonder sometimes what people that indulge in such stuff are repressing in themselves...? It really does beg the question to my mind. What would these good law-abiding citizens do if they got their hands on the fellon? Or maybe someone who vaguely resembled him? Sometimes I think they should just let the illiterate mob sate their primal blood-lust in traditional old fashioned ways, by torturing animals and so-on. |

I feel giving some criminals a new identity is wrong. Thousands of criminals who have been convicted for terrible crimes and imprisoned, are subsequently released under their own name. Are they ever killed by vigilantes? No, vigilante killers are a myth of 1980's movies. There are , however, an alarming number of innocent people attacked by former prisoners who have been released. The public should be allowed to know who and where they are. |

Yesterday however some reports were saying that he was due to be charged with the rape of a 9-year old. There are four questions, it seems to me: - 1. Is Calvert Venables? The answer can only be "no". 2. Should Venables be or have been killed, by the state or vigilantes? No, that cannot be permissible - other punishments can be undone or compensated if erroneous, but death is irreversible. 3. Should Venables be outed? Having regard to the resources consumed by creating and maintaining a new identity, I have difficulty seeing that he deserves protection. What makes him worth more protection than Jamie Bulger got? 4. Should the two little killers have been released in the first place? No. They were never going to be capable of being made over to a civilised state. Were it not for point 2 above I would have thought a case could be made for their permanent disposal. |

Stoking up such hatred, however repugnant the original crime, just proves that there is no difference between Venables and many many people. A reporter with a camera going round Liverpool looking for social misfits and feral scum, asking them what they would like to do to Venables given the chance... It shows how easy it was for Hitler to stoke things in the '30s. How long before we see something similar to when a paediatrician was attacked in Portsmouth because somebody thought it meant the same as paedophile..... |

Here in our country, we don't like people doing wrong things, so we have courts and prisons to deal with them.
