New Open Mic, Knaresborough, North Yorks

This has been running at The Crown on the High Street for about a month. Sessions are weekly from about 8.30pm.

The session is hosted by Ian who fronts the ad hoc house band which has evolved into acoustic guitar, mandolin, electric bass and drums with occasional keyboards. The default setting is that Ian (and I) will sing all night if no-one else wants to get up and play but that anyone is welcome to do a spot either on their own or with some or all of the band.

Last night we had two additonal performers, one solo singer songwriter and one singer/guitarist. Obviously we need more!

Musical styles on offer vary from trad folk through blues and pop to out and out rock.

The room is very big so we can fit in plenty of audience too if anyone just fancies a listen.

Hope to see you there

Roger

Have you got any flyers.... I'd be happy to spread them about around here (just 20 miles up the road from Knaresborough)?

Can't see what night of the week it is? Guess it must be Thursday?

Yes, it is Thursday (sorry!). I'm a newbie at the session myself and found out by word of mouth. Last night I suggested to Ian that it could do with some publicity, hence my posting here - so, as far as I know, there aren't any flyers or I might have seen one earlier. Thanks for the offer, though.

Shame it's a Thursday - is there a good reason for this?
Clashes with at least three other folk clubs / sessions on a Thursday, so it's unlikely I'll be able to make it.
Good luck with it anyway Ian.

I wasn't part of the decision to make it a Thursday since I found it after it had already started. However, I understood that there had been a session in The Mitre pub in Knaresborough on a Thursday and that finished in November - so, maybe................

It is a pity that it is on a Thursday, as that clashes with the long established session at The Half Moon in Pool-in-Wharfedale which we are struggling to keep going since the sad departure of Mark Longster

As I said above, I'm pretty new to this area and have been looking around for places to play since moving here from Beverley in November. Perhaps you would like to email me with more details of the Pool session - rc.busby@gmail.com

I'd love to give it a go but Thursday and Friday are out. Sunday?Monday? Tuesday? I am trying to learn to sing my own songs with my guitar which I'm just learning to play,, but I'm new to this although I play piano , but fed up with humping keyboards about. If you have a keyboard I'd be happy to help out with backing.
The White Swan at Addingham is great place to try out, every alternate Tuesday. Very supportive crowd for novices but some excellent players and singers.

Derry Jones
