Is that the Peter Knight who used to play fiddle for Steeleye Span?

The song can be found in Glenn Ohrlin's wonderful THE HELLBOUND TRAIN.

This song pre -dates Steeleye span by 50 years at least.

If no one is interested I won't bother posting it.

Pete Knight's last ride (Recorded by Wilf Carter aka Montana Slim)

It seems my whole life's full of sorrow and sighs
Always something make me feel blue
For I just lost a pal like a brother to me
I still can't believe that it's true.

We were old pals on the prairie,
Many times we have rode side by side
Never dreaming a bronco would throw him
And that Pete Knight would take his last ride.

He was riding a bronco called Slowdown
Many times he had spurred his old hide
But when he left the chute fate played it's hand
That's when Pete took his last ride.

He still remains King of the Cowboys
Many times he has won world wide fame
And the millions of people who knew him
They all idolized Pete Knight's name.

Oh some day there will be a great round up on high
When the ranch boss starts combing the plains,
May our names all be square on the tally
May we meet on that heavenly range.

It seems like there should be more about the actual accident but I don't recall. I'm going back 60 plus years here.

From memory: Pete Knight was a famous bronc rider. There is a Pete Knight Memorial Arena in Crossfield, Alberta, just north of Calgary. Wilf Carter sang at its dedication, probably around 1975. (I assume he sang the song; it was sold out, and I couldn't get in.)

Did rodeo bronc riders really use spurs? Sounds dangerous to me.

I used to have a large collection of cowboy songs when I was a boy; this is one of them.

I met my hero, Wilf Carter, and he allowed me to play his custom made Martin guitar. What a gentleman he was.
Typical Canadian.

Bronc riders did and still do wear spurs. Spurring the mount is an essential part of the activity.

I'd say my favorite cowboy song is Billy Venero.
It was in my English lit. text book. Surely it must be in the DT?

Billy Vanero is there but there is part of it missing.

As he crossed the alkalai all his thoughts flew on ahead
To the little lane at the cow ranch thinking not of danger near.
With his quirt's unceasing whirl and the jingle of his spurs
Little Chappo bore the cowboy o're the far away frontier.

Lower and lower sank the sun he drew rein at Rocky Run
Here those men met death my Chappo and he stroked his glossy mane.
So shall those we go to warn ere the coming of the morn
If I fail, God help my Bessy and he started on again.

Sharp and clear a rifle shot woke the echos of the spot
I'm wounded cried Vanero as he swayed from side to side.
I will save her yet he cried little Bess will know I tried
And for her sake he halted in the shadow of a hill
From a limb a twig he broke and he dipped his pen of oak
In the warm blood that was spurting from a wound above his heart.

Rouse he wrote before too late Apache warriors be in wait
Good by God bless you darling and he felt the cold tears start.
"Take this message if not me straight to little Bessy Lee
Then he tied himself to the saddle and gave his horse the reins.

Just at dusk a horse of brown wet with sweat came panting down The little lane at the cow ranch and he stopped at Bessies door But the cowboy was asleep and his slumber was so deep Little Bess could never wake him though she try forever more.

and the rest is there.

The Pete Knight Memorial Centre was opened in 1977.

Pete Knight did not wear spurs when he rode.

The version posted by Kendall above is missing a couple of verses. I have just now listened to a recording on Spotify, and I can vouch for the accuracy of these lyrics:

PETE KNIGHT'S LAST RIDE
As recorded by Wilf Carter (as "Montana Slim"), 1937.

It seems my whole life's full of heartaches and sighs,
Always something to make me feel blue,
For I just lost a pal like a brother to me.
Seems I can't believe that it's true.

We were old pals on the prairie.
Many times we have rode side by side,
Never dreaming a bronco would throw him
And Pete Knight would take his last ride.

He was riding a bronco called Slowdown.
Many times he had spurred his old hide,
But when he left the chute fate played its hand.
That's when Pete took his last ride.

He still remains King of the Cowboys.
Many times he has won worldwide fame,
And the millions of people who knew him
They all idolized Pete Knight's name.

It was only last fall that we parted so gay.
His handshake I'll always recall,
When he said: "So long, pal; good luck to you.
I'll see you the next coming fall."

But now I stand head bowed in silence
While a teardrop it falls unashamed.
We'll miss him a lot since he left us,
But old mem'ries will always remain.

Oh, someday there'll be a great roundup on high,
When the ranch boss starts combing the plain.
May our names all be squared on the tally.
May we meet on that heavenly range.
