Can some obliging 'catter supply the lyrics for Red Clay Ramblers' 'Corrugated Lady'. Their website has some lyrics, but not this one.

Sounds interesting but not a clue.

It's on the Twisted Laurel album, and I know I have that, just don't know WHERE I have it at the moment. I'll look and report back . . . maybe even this year.

Hi, Dale. Thanks for your reply, but I have the album. I am finding it difficult to decipher some of the lyrics. There is no lyric sheet with the LP nor with the double album CD reissue with 'Merchant's Lunch'.

Stewie-

Maybe if you try some Jack Daniels it will help!

Thanks, Charley. I'll give that a whirl - I have to buy a bottle for my son's birthday tomorrow!

Oh, I figured that Stewie, I was just going to try to give it a go. Maybe its time for one of our collective efforts. We haven't done that in quite a while.

I'll continue to look.

If you get a chance, give me an email at dale8r AT hotmail.com. There's a few things I've stored up to talk about.

I listened a few dozen more times (sans Jack Daniels) and I think I may have cracked it. I had to separate the channels to get the second part.

Dale, I would appreciate any corrections if you find your copy. I'll email you at the weekend.

CORRUGATED LADY
(T. Thompson/J. Black)

Well, I walked and I ran from one end of this land
To the other like an athletic fool
I was fond of playin' tennis with the countesses of Venice
Courtin' princesses in heated swimming pools
Back and forth across the ocean, southern Spain to Nova Scotia
Chasin' women till my face was turning blue
Now my pencil's out of lead, I'll just lay up in bed
With my scissors and my paper and my glue
'Cos a cardboard girlfriend's much to be preferred
To paper lay-ay-dies
I'll take my exercise at home with her
Oh, nothin' could be sweeter than my sweetie when I treat her
Like a dartboard on the wall
That's my great big, corrugated, chipboard paper doll

Instrumental break

[The above first part is sung against the following part]

I'm gonna buy myself a paper doll to call my own
One that other fellows cannot steal
And then, them flirty-flirty guys with their flirty-flirty eyes
Will have to play with dollies that are real
When I come home at night she'll be there waiting
She'll be the truest doll in all the world
I'd rather have myself this paper doll to call my own
Than a big old-minded real time girl

Well, I have it in hand now and have listened maybe five times, but like you, I thought the way to get it would be to separate the channels, especially where they are doing two songs at once. I loaded it into Sound Forge in preparation for that, but hadn't gone much farther than that.

Just at first glance, it looks like you've done an admirable job, Stewie. I'll see what I can do, also some time before the end of the weekend. I'll also send the song on to a few of the usual suspects for their input.

What an amazing song!

It should be the theme song for the School of Packaging at Michigan State University!

Dale, thanks. I'll email you tomorrow.

Charley, the late Tommy Thompson of the Ramblers was the author of some remarkable songs.

Great job, Stewie. I don't think I could have gone through it nearly so fast without your big kick start. I haven't heard back from the guys I sent this to, but here's what I came up with.

I saw very little difference. The last line is almost certainly Than a fickle-minded real live gal. (Though it could be girl)

One minor thing I heard differently. In the next to last line, I heard "a" paper doll rather than "this" paper doll.

I remember Paper Doll mostly from the Mills Brothers, but a bunch of people recorded it, just not quite like the RCR, but then who IS like the RCR?

The only other place that I couldn't catch was where you have Southern Spain to Nova Scotia I heard, variously
Caught a plane, Saw this plane, On a plain but finally settled on Saw this plane in Nova Scotia. I'm not the least bit sure about that line.

None of those choices make a lick of sense, but what is there about the song that does, other than it's a lot of fun? If I hear back from Joe, Gene or Arkie with something that comes closer to what our ears are supposed to be hearing, I'll pass it on. They may yet show up here as well.

Twisted Laurel was and is one of my very favorite albums, top ten or twenty for sure. I'm sure I'm going to have Corrugated Lady, The Ace, The Telephone Girl, etc. swimming through my head for weeks.

Lots of fun as usual, Stewie, thanks for bringing this up.

Ah, just spotted another possible difference: how about I was spotted playin' tennis?

Hi Dale,

Many thanks for your input. It is great to have more than one pair of ears deciphering lyrics. I reckon you are spot on with 'fickle-minded real live gal'. That was one line I was uncertain about and I can hear it clearly now that you have clarified it.

It could well be 'spotted' which has the same number of syllables as 'fond of'.

I can't hear 'plane' in the fifth line. It still sounds to me like 'Southern Spain'.

'Twisted Laurel' is also one of my favourites of the RCRs, but my all-time favourite of theirs is 'Meeting in the Air'.

Thanks again, Stewie.
