Songwriting Evening,Grimsby UK 19 April 2010

Subject: Songwriting Evening,Grimsby UK 19.3.10
From: Rockhen

Hi to anyone interested in writing songs...
We have arranged a Songwriting Evening at 8pm Monday 19th April, 2010 at Grimsby British Legion, Friargate House, Cartergate, Grimsby DN31 1QZ
It is aimed at anyone who already writes songs, or is interested in hearing how others write, or at having a go at starting/finishing a song/getting help/just sharing ideas.
It will be a no pressure night. You can just come and have a drink and listen, or contribute as much or little as you wish.
It is not a workshop in the sense that there will be no instruction as such...just several songwriters who currently write available to chat and probably perform songs or parts of songs, as well as chance to ask questions, bring along anything you have started or ask for ideas. It is a free evening but it would be helpful if you let me know if you are coming because of organising the room with seating etc plus any handouts re numbers.
Thanks, Helen :-)

Cheers folks, I've been away but thanks for keeping this going and passing on info. Re current songwriters...well, humbly, myself and...if you go, Tim, maybe you would consider sharing your songwriting expertise? There will be others, including my songwriting partner in crime, Ian, of Helian Keys, but will confirm nearer the time. It is really a kind of social gathering for anyone who is interested. No one person has all the answers and everyone writes differently, hence I thought it would be good to have a chance to meet up and share ideas and experiences.

Helen,

I know you said that it wouldn't be a workshop but, as someone with very limited song writing experience, I would like to come in the hope that I might learn something.

Have you got Dave Evardson and John Conolly coming along?

From: Rockhen

Hey Doug, I think we can all learn from each other as we all have different ideas and different things which inspire us, so it would be brilliant to see you.
Ideally, everyone who comes will go home with new ideas/contacts/resources etc purely by listening and sharing ideas with others.
Villan, everyone is welcome but I haven't sent invites to anyone in particular. It would be lovely to see Dave or John there, to add their songwriting experiences to the mix. I just want to enable anyone interested in songwriting to get chance to chat with likeminded individuals, whether established writers or total beginners.
PS Hopefully it will be a non-stuffy and cheerfully stimulating evening for all, whether 4 or 40 turn up! :-)

It sounds like a good event. If anyone would like to take it further, may I draw attention to an all-day songwriting workshop with Mike O'Connor in Lewes on Sunday 6th. June?

The previous day Mike and Barbara Griggs lead an all-day all-instruments workshop on Cornish tunes and perform at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club on the Saturday evening.

When we went to check the venue, there was a ramp to the front door and also a stair lift up the stairs. I meant to double check and ask re the stair lift but unfortunately, forgot. I assumed, that it was in use. I have just phoned them and it is of course, typically, broken. They can not guarantee it being fixed for the 19th, although they said it may be, so I am mortified.
I have PM'd you, TS to see if we can overcome this as I do want to include everyone for this evening. Very humble apologies for this, if we run other nights, we will check access first of all and double check that all is in place. I am hoping we can sort something out for this night, too.

The venue assure me that it is waiting to be fixed but cannot say when. Unfortunately that is all I can find out. If there is anyone else who would like to attend but has concerns re access, please PM me and I will endeavour to make alternate arrangements.
Humble apologies for the inconvenience and a new venue will be chosen for any further evenings.

Thanks to Tom on BBC Lincs, for a nice plug re Monday night. Much appreciated, Tom!
Winter Wilson and Tom briefly discussed the evening and how isolated songwriting can be. The night is to give people chance to make links with other writers, not necessarily to write together but just have other contacts with similar interest in writing songs.

Songwriting Evening Venue location. Grimsby British Legion
The venue is on Cartergate in Grimsby, on the corner where Cartergate meets Chantry Lane.

Please note...If driving, Cartergate is one-way, so you have to approach the building from the other end, via the Bargate/Deansgate/Dudley street intersection, taking the smaller Cartergate road. The car park in on the left, just before the British Legion Building.
Looking forward to it and hope to see a few Mudcatters there! :-)
