28 Mar 10 - 11:12 PM (#2874349) Subject: Lyr Add: I'M USING MY BIBLE FOR A ROADMAP From: Jim Dixon Assuming the parody exists, it must be based on this bluegrass gospel song, which has never been discussed in a forum thread at Mudcat, although it is in the DT, without attribution. I'M USING MY BIBLE FOR A ROADMAP Don Reno and Charles Schroeder Fort Knox Music Inc. and Trio Music Inc., © 1952. I'm using my Bible for a roadmap. Ten Commandments, they tell me what to do. The Twelve Disciples are my road signs, And Jesus will see me safely through. CHORUS: There'll be no detours in Heaven, No rough roads along the way. I'm using my Bible for a roadmap. My last stop is Heaven some sweet day. I'm using my Bible for a roadmap. The children of Israel used it too. They crossed the Red Sea of destruction,* For God was there to see them through. CHORUS [Recorded by Reno & Smiley (Dan Reno & Red Smiley); also by the Blackwood Brothers, the Country Gentlemen, Bill Harrell, Mac Wiseman, and many others.] [* I wonder if the songwriter considered that they wandered in the desert for 40 years!] |

29 Mar 10 - 09:01 AM (#2874614) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Using my Bible for a Roadblock From: Jim Dixon How exactly did the "children of Israel" use the Bible for a road map when they crossed the Red Sea--considering the relevant parts couldn't have been written yet? Not even the Ten Commandments could have been known then. They were given to Moses in Sinai (or so we are told). |
29 Mar 10 - 09:50 AM (#2874643) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Using my Bible for a Roadblock From: Mark Clark We do this Don Reno tune in Castle Ridge, especially when hired to do a gospel show. But the key here is that historical and theological accuracy is rarely a requirement (or even desirable) in a bluegrass gospel number. I'm reminded of the Carter Stanley tune White Dove. “...But the Savior needs angles up in heaven, Now they sing around the great white throne.” This always gives me a vision of what we used to call “driving the porcelain bus.” Not a good vision to have in the middle of a show. - Mark |

I'm using my Bible as a roadblock To keep me pure and ready for the fray Jesus was a good old boy from Texas Invented Coors to wash my sins away And I know theyll be no Gun Laws in heaven they wont try to push control that only harms I'm using my Bible as a roadblock 'cos Jesus gave the Right to carry arms When he sent David out to fight Goliath He gave him a slingshot at the door But if he knew about Sam Colt's black powder He'd a given him a Magnum Forty Four Chorus tune I'm using my Bible as a roadblock To stop things with which I don't agree I'm using my Bible as a roadblock To keep the world exactly right for me |
