So why the name Mudcat?

I have a question. Why the name mudcat? Was it random or is there some lyrical reason behind it or what? Just out of curiosity. My fiance and I were coming back from Paducah Ky today and she asked me about the name. I have been on here for several years now and had never thought about it.

I was either going to name my son or my website mudcat. Web site came first.

It's a catfish, typically found in the mud... delta... Mississippi... blues. My favorite form of traditional music. Just kind of popped out one night in a smoky basement bar during a midnight ramble, and stuck.

If it wasn't called The Mudcat Cafe, what would it be called? (Too lazy to check all those other threads.) Max Cafe? Martin Gibson Cafe?

Just askin'.

Peace, Mooh.

Man you have to love how cool the people are on here at times. I appreciate the comments everyone. Please keep them up I love seeing how witty you can all be.

Thanks Max even though I may too lazy to look up threads (or just didn't think about it bc I have never seen it asked before and NO Max that is not directed at you) at least MC was on our minds. Muds never entered my mind though. I have fished for them a bunch through the years but for some reason I didn't even think about catfish. Okay I will hand it back over to the nice Catters to prove how superior and witty they are. Thanks everyone I learned a few things with this thread.

Well, we used to own deltablues.org but the site took a quick turn to an infinite level or broadness. I suppose trad.org would be my choice for a URL now. We've established a brand now, so changing it wouldn't be prudent. digitrad is the real deal too.

The bigger point here is how community and tradition live in the same place. Making an interactive reference to oral traditions is what we really are. A living organism of information. Fact and folk don't make sense, so this is the best we can do. What do you call that?

I love MC. I tell people about it all the time and have made some great friends on here. I think this is the prefect balance. I have never came to MC looking for something and left empty handed. It is one of the few sites on the web I check everytime I get on. Even though I may not post real frequent I read it it daily. I can't believe I overlooked the catfish though haha. I dig the name but when my fiance asked me it struck me I had never even thought about it. Thanks for everything Max

Jayto,
Pay no attention to Catspaw. He's just annoyed that no one has refreshed the Dainty Davie thread in a dog's age.
I am amazed that he has left Paducah, KY out of his mini-tirade.

And the other two, Max? How are they doing?

Well Sue, do you think that Billyjoejimbob is a helluva' lot better?

And Jayto......Sorry I needed to put some happy haha's there or something. That's just a typical smartass comment from me in my best moods. Don't be troubled by it, just stand up and proudly say, "Well DAMN.....Spaw insulted ME!!!" Put it on your Mudcat resume'........Things I have accomplished at Mudcat=Insult from Spaw.

Wanna' score more points? Ask about the NYCFTTS or refresh the Dainty Davy thread.

Alexis just turned 20 and is beautiful, thoughtful, confident, compassionate, wise-beyond-her-years and a sophomore at Penn State Altoona. She's soon to move to town so I am looking forward to seeing more of her (and having her and her friends babysit). I couldn't be more proud of her, she has exceeded my every expectation of her.

Lily turned 7 in November and is a ball of energy. She very literally never stops talking. In her sleep, even. We are working hard, as is she, to finish 1st grade strong as we got off to a bit of a slow start. She is bold and imaginative and has a preternatural memory and understanding of melody and verse. She can improv a verse in our nightly bath-time concerts with ease and is, more often than I, spot-on with the rhyme and turnaround. My only concern is that her bravery may be greater than her skills, which most certainly has fallen from this tree.

As for my son, he ended up with Bodhi Sky Spiegel. Mudcat may have not been the worst of my ideas. Poor boy was almost Taj or Lightning (no shit). Could've even been Max Jr.

Hi Sue.....Growing up I loved baseball and was big Cleveland Indians fan. They had a really fine pitcher for a long while (54-62?) named Jim "Mudcat" Grant and I just loved the guy. Fortunately I found other heroes when my kids came along..........

I too had wondered. I could have done a search but didn't know what to search for.

I had surmised something to do with catfish, but had no idea of the connection.

Catspaw your cool don't sweat it :) I have learned over the years not to get too riled up. I often misread the intent behind posts. I have been on here long enough and misread other posts and mistype my own haha. I appreciate it though and hope I didn't snap back to bad haha. Like I said MC is a great site and I have met some really great people on here. I am thankful for it being on the web and for everyone that helps keep it going. Thanks everyone.

Lol, you total hippy! I'm a second gen and was almost blessed with something like that, was almost some wood-elf name from LotR. Known a couple of Sky's too. But what sounds like hippy names in the UK are possibly more normative to American peeps? Leaf, Summer, Tuesday, Forest etc.
