80 years old today (31st March).

He was on Danny Baker's programme on BBC radio 5 live on Saturday and sounded in fine form ...

Rolf seems to have been very active in the UK media recently. Last week I saw him hosting the news quiz Have I Got News for You, followed the next day by a radio interview which I think was on BBC4. If I heard him correctly, Rolf was brought up in Wales - is this true, or did he possibly say New South Wales? As he's now living in Wales, perhaps he is Welsh by birth. On a personal note, in the mid-80's I was admiring a cartoon he'd drawn on the reception office wall of the Maidenhead Advertiser newspaper. As I said to my wife 'that looks like a Rolf Harris drawing', the great man himself entered the door!! Happy Birthday Rolf - you look and act like someone so much younger - must be the elixir of music!! By the way - is he really Australian??

The tune that put john f weldon in the ditch (a few posts up) was part of a running gag on Andrew Denton's TV show, The Money Or The Gun - every week, someone else would perform Stairway To Heaven in his/her/their own style. Eventually, a CD came out with some/most/all of the versions. Many were good, but (for my money, or gun) Harris' was the best.

I saw that Sidmouth concert too: what a performer! He had just had an arthroscopy on his knee so was hobbling a out a bit: the only song he couldn't do that night was "Jake the Peg".
He had an amazing didge player with him for "Sun Arise" too.
Met him again in Heathrow airport in 2005, when we were on our way back from NZ and he was on his way up to Edinburgh to do that big painting project of the multi-faceted Mona Lisa.

Do you recall the Willoughby telly cartoon programmes he did? I used to have a 'Willoughby' sketching pantograph when I was around 6 years old and looking back, that started off my design career. Spent ages on it, never looked back. God bless him.

"By the way - is he really Australian??"

Yes he's Australian, but his grandfather was G.F. Harris, a slightly second division, but nonetheless 'name', Welsh painter whose work occasionally turns up on Antiques Roadshow.

I think this qualifies him to play soccer and rugby for Wales.
