31 Mar 10 - 10:39 PM (#2877044) Subject: BS: Lemmings Migrating From: Sandy Mc Lean It has been reported that millions of lemmings are being displaced from the Arctic because of melting permafrost. They have been on the march in groups of several million and they are heading towards eastern Ontario. Already they have traveled over 1000 kilometers. By nature they travel in a straight line and will not waver from course, even to preserve their own lives. As a distant relative of the skunk they emit a rather unpleasant scent. One of their favourite foods is tulip bulbs and it is feared that the Ottawa Tulip Festival may be their destination. The National Capital Commission has started setting bait traps in Ottawa's Green Belt but the government says that national security prevents more of the story from being released to the public. However they assure citizens of the city that an evacuation plan already exists if one should be needed. Lemming |

Authorities are trying to keep it quiet, hoping they'll come up with a solution before people and habitats are threatened but a friend of mine works with the department of Alaska Fish and Wildlife and she told me in strict confidence that polar bears - groups of up to 40 have been reported - are also on the move. Unless the various divisions and departments come up with a workable plan, they say there is really nothing to stop them before they reach the Atlantic. These are desperate times, folks. |

01 Apr 10 - 03:36 AM (#2877160) Subject: RE: BS: Lemmings Migrating From: VirginiaTam Well, I am sure that Scotland wouldn't mind if you took about several million tons of snow off of them right now and dumped it in the path of the lemmings and the polar bears. That should slow em down a bit. Or you might release a load of feral cats from China in the path. Then they will eat the lemmings and the polar bears will be placated with the cats. Job done. |

A young biologist sent to northern Canada to study wolves observes a canine feasting upon migrating lemmings and decides to perform an experiment. Can a large carnivore (yes, I know they are omnivores, but I recall the book and movie said "carnivore") subsist on only lemmings? There's a bit more to it than that, but I won't spoil the WHOLE act. Here's a clip from the movie. |
