I'm getting into learning French again and I need inspiration! Can anyone out there recommend any African music sung in French.

Off the cuff I can't think of any obvious sources for African songs in French, but I've recently found some inspiration from the superb CD collection France, Une Anthologie Des Musiques Traditionelles which has some great recordings but which strangely omits any from Francophone Africa.

The two Zairean greats, Tabu Ley and Franco, did some of their stuff in French although I believe most of their stuff was sung in Lingala. Some was macaronic, i.e. in both. The music's so good that even if you don't learn much French from it, you'll feel uplifted!

(I think that's what's referred to as a "win-win situation"!)

There's quite a bit of Malian music (eg Tinariwen and the Farka Toure's) in French though mixed in with the African languages.

I saw Jean Emilien from Madagascar at a festival serveral years ago and bought a CD. He sings in French and the music is wonderful.

There's bits and bobs on the Desert Blues program about the Festival in the Desert which might introduce a few bands and singers. It's nice translating along with Abdullah the magnificent also!
