06 Apr 10 - 08:11 PM (#2881044) Subject: RE: BS: Arsenal - National Anthem ? From: Peter K (Fionn) With the proviso that by British standards Arsenal play beautiful football - and manage to do it while being slightly more self-resourced than either of their two rivals for the premier-league title this year. Couldn't agree more with Alan. National anthems and nationalistic symbology are an even more egregious intrusion into the Olympic games, which are supposed to be for competitive sport between individuals rather than nations. |

07 Apr 10 - 12:33 AM (#2881150) Subject: RE: BS: Arsenal - National Anthem ? From: MGM·Lion It's not playing the national anthems that is wrong; it's allowing a so-called 'London' team to field such a side. I have been an Arsenal supporter since 1934 ~ until now. I see no point in supporting a foreign team who could well represent Earth to play Mars but have no sort of local connection whatever ~ playing not even in their traditional ground, but a new one named for a foreign entity; managed by a Frenchman ... Any need to go on? I mean, I know that when I remember their great days it was all largely down to 2 Welshmen {Bryn Jones, Billy Meredith}, a Scot {Alex James}, & a Cornishman {Cliff Bastin}: but it just felt different somehow... FIFA; FA; ALL OF YOU ~~ BRING ON THE '6 & 5' RULE ~~~ NOW! ~Michael~ |

From: Alan Day I agree Michael As an X Chelsea supporter , not missing a game for years, thrilled by the brilliance of Jimmy Greaves, Peter Osgood and the rest of the team (if they were playing well), I just have no interest in them at all now. At least they field more English players than Arsenal. I am more interested in Aston Villa now and management of football teams. Al |

07 Apr 10 - 06:19 AM (#2881243) Subject: RE: BS: Arsenal - National Anthem ? From: MikeL2 hi MtheGM I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have been a supporter of Man United for many years - not quite as long as you have supported Arsenal. So was my father and his father before him. I was born in Manchester and I go to all the home games and to many of the away fixtures too. So you cannot say that I am an average Man U supporter !! No prawn sandwiches for me !! Although my son's company does have a box there and we do get invited sometimes. Like you I think that Blatter and Platini & Co. should implement the mandatory oft mooted 5 or six home players rule. We do have more British players than most but every year we are becoming more dependent on foreign players. I will still support Man U.....it is like a drug. I am going tonight to see them play Bayern. I hope that they improve on Saturday's performance. It is difficult to understand how they are still in the running for two top trophies. I have watched them all season and they have only played well about twice. They have scraped through on many occasions with less than convincing performances. cheers MikeL2 |

But I do actually agree about the "foreign quota" rule,or whatever you call it.Also, I think I know why there are not enough good British players turning out for British sides ; it's because they're all playing Spain,or Italy,or the USA.....anywhere except their own country, the traitors !! People like Beckham don't give a toss about the UK,only £££££££ !! |

07 Apr 10 - 06:51 PM (#2881720) Subject: RE: BS: Arsenal - National Anthem ? From: Les from Hull How many English players playing outside of England would get a start in a Premiership side, maybe 2 or 3? The vast number of English footballers playing abroad are in Scotland, Wales, Australia, USA, New Zealand etc. There's a very comprehensive list http://lesrosbifs.net/?page_id=15 EU regulations give EU citizens the right to work in other EU countries. How good would African football be if African footballers were prevented from playing abroad? I totally agree with not playing National Anthems, but then I would be quite happy if National Anthems were universally banned from everything. |
