Colin..... it appears to have been shut down... temporarily????

I know Max has been making a lot of changes .. and he has mentioned a new chat room but as yet it hasn't appeared. Not a complaint Max, I know you're busy.......

But if you do a filter search for "chat" you'll find the old threads....... but I haven't been able to get it to work for a while.

Whistler, I'm guessing you mean "Chat." Max is still working on getting that back in order. It hasn't been working since his last renovation of the 'Cat. I'm sure it will be back up soon.
In the meantime, I sure hope the Forum doesn't become a "Chat Room." All that stuff is fine and dandy, but if there's too much, I don't think it's healthy for the life of the Forum. I think the Mudcat is what it is because the forum has been a place where people can feel comfortable sharing their ideas. Mudcat is at its best, I think, when there is a healthy mix of fun and discussion. When all you can find here is mindless "chit-chat," it tends to get a bit "teejus" around here. I don't mean to start another flame war, but I think it's worthwhile for us to watch the balance and the direction of the content of the Forum.
If all we're doing is exchanging insider jokes and one-liners, maybe that fits better in the Chat Room, which will be back up soon. I think that many people, myself included, feel excluded when the discussion is too heavy with the "insider" stuff.

Hi Joe,

with that in mind I was going to try to set up a chat room in ICQ (to tide us over until Max gets things working fully.).... but I can't figure it out... need someone who knows what they're doing.

Well I have managed to set up a chat room.... ICQ#46015364. &folk music

what I can't figure out is... is it possible for me to be online as "me" at the same time as being online as "folk music".... doesn't look like it at the moment. so I'm off to check tech support........ will let you know if this gets going.

I'm still the new guy way in the back of the peanut gallery, but if I'm allowed to have an opinion, it would be that Joe's comment is on target.

Yep....

Hence chat rooms......... thereby attempting to take some of it out of the threads....

Welcome to Mudcat Paddy......

Welcome Yarnspinner... read some old threads as well as the current ones, in order to get an idea of what we're about. If you have areas of expertise, be sure and use them to help others with lyric, or artist searches. Before creating a new thread, do a Forum Search to see if your idea has been addressed before. Visit the Tavern, where almost anything you could say would be taken in stride. And most of all have fun- that's what this place is mainly about!

LEJ

PS Any friend of Sandy's is welcome here!

Welcome to Mudcat, Kendall! Sandy is also responsible for getting me to join. Folks around here are very nice, extremely knowledgeble and often witty.

What variety of folk music do you like? I play a a few different kinds of fiddle tunes and like to sing. I'm not great at either and prefer to take part in group music rather than play or sing solo.

To say 'howdy' to Kendall, go to the 'get acquainted' thread.

Welcome to the new-comers. Anything you can contribute regarding music, instruments, singing, history, tunes, lyrics, questions, answers, comments, etc, please jump in!

The 'thread creep' (b.s. and tangents) as we call it will inevitably grow on it's own around any topic that is under discussion.

Regarding personal chat (hey, we do have a personal message system here) it is natural for some of it to creep into threads. We have the common interest of music, so I say, yeah... what Joe said.

Whoops, it's actually in the 'Please Help' thread. Sorry - it appeared to be a new thread because I went there from the 'New Messages Since...' page.
