Richie, I know you requested these lyrics over a decade ago, but in the event you are still looking for them, here's my transcription of the song from Wade Mainer: Early and Great Vol. 1 (Old Homestead Records OHCS-149, 1983). This is an exact recording of the original 78, from the sounds of it perhaps even the master tapes.

The tune is, as pointed out elsewhere by Richie, the same as "John Henry."

ALL MY FRIENDS

Come all my friends, wherever you may be
And listen to my cry
Remember the Lord has promised you and me
He has promised us a mansion in the sky
Promised us a mansion in the sky

Remember back in olden times
When Jesus walked with the Prophets too
He was scold and rude* by the gentiles and the Jews
And He died on the Cross for me and you
And He died on the Cross for me and you

Laz'rus covered over with thorns
Laid by the ridge bent o'er
And he begged to them who passed him by
They only said "poor Laz'rus, you must die"
Only said "poor Laz'rus, you must die"

The rich man was dreaming of his silver and gold
And he heared not poor Laz'rus' cry
And now the rich man is down below
But poor Laz'rus is saved bye and bye
But poor Laz'rus is saved bye and bye

Come all my friends and listen to me
The day will come some time
When Jesus will return to this old earth
And take us to our Home on High
Take us to our Home on High

*I have my doubts about this line. It sounds more like "scold and brewed" or "stoned and brewed" but neither of those make much sense. The current line of rude doesn't make any sense either I imagine it could be "scold[ed] and [the gentiles were] rude"

After thinking it over again, I'm learning towards the asterisk being the words "scorned and 'buked" (as in rebuked) but I'll have to listen again to be sure.

Perhaps the word is rued, as in 'to rue'. ??

cnd, after listening to it on YouTube, I'm guessing the line IS scold and rued. The take I listened to is at

I think it likely that 'scold' is presumed to be the past tense by the author just as 'heared' later in the song is perceived as the past tense. (I knew a fellow in the far north who said heared instead of heard.)

I don't think it's "scold". It would be "scoldED", but I can't find an audio version. It could have been "scorned", too.
"Rued" is perfect.

#, the link you gave lists the song, but won't let me play it. I can't find it elsewhere.

Conveniently enough, you can hear the exact part of the song in question on the Apple Music preview here: link

Unfortunately #'s link didn't work for me either and I am currently away from my record collection. I'll listen again when I get back but I do think there's a good bit of credence to the "scold and rued" answer.

Thanks, cnd. "Heared" is still past tense, but it definitely sounds more like "scold" than "scorned". Scorned makes sense, in context, though, even if it's not authentic.

Definitely "rued".

That link should work. Different album but it's the same take I listened to.

Thanks both Jeri and # for the help with the lines. I do agree that the phrase is "scold and rued"

Jeri, if you have an interest in hearing the song, PM me and I can send you my recording of it via email.

There's a funny timing thing in that song. Thanks for bringing the thread back up, cnd. Sorry to both of you about the YouTube links.
