Hi,

Trying to find info and lyrics to "Are You Ready?" It appears in Befo' de War Spirituals, p. 53.

It's hard to google because it's so common a title.

Here are some lyrics:

Are you ready, my brother?
Are you ready for the journey?

I think this is part of the spiritual, Ride Up in the Chariot.

I can't find any lyrics under the title, Are You Ready?

Hi,

I don't think there's anything here. There are several versions on-line but I'm not sure of the relationship with Are You Ready. I'm convinced thye are related spirituals tho.

Ride The Chariot- Arranged by George Pendergrass, Wayburn Dean and Keith Lancaster Lead: John Green, Wayburn Dean, Robert Guy, George Pendergrass

Chorus: Ride the chariot in the mornin' Lord
Ride the chariot in the mornin' Lord
I'm getting ready for the judgment day
My Lord, my Lord

Ride the chariot in the mornin' Lord
Ride the chariot in the mornin' Lord
I'm getting ready for the judgment day
My Lord, my Lord

Are you ready my brother (oh yes my Lord)
Are you ready for the journey (oh yes my Lord)
Do you wanna see my Jesus
I'm waiting for the chariot
'Cause I'm ready to go

Chorus

(Are you ready for the mighty journey leaving in the morning?
Are you ready for the master call? Just call me in morning.
Are you ready if you wanna see my Jesus?)

Are you ready my sister
Are you ready for the journey
Do you wanna see my Jesus
I'm waiting for the chariot
'Cause I'm ready to go

I never will forget that day
When all my sins were taken away
My feet were snatched from the miry clay
I'll serve him till that judgment day

Chorus

I'm gonna ride in the chariot
in the chariot, in the chariot
Ride in the chariot

Are you ready my brother
Are you ready for the journey
Do you wanna see my Jesus
I'm waiting for the chariot
'Cause I'm ready to go

Ride in the chariot

Here's one site
http://www.filestube.com/a/acappella+spirituals

This is the part that is part of the old spiritual:

Are you ready my brother
Are you ready for the journey
Do you wanna see my Jesus
I'm waiting for the chariot
'Cause I'm ready to go

I just don't have Befo' de War Spirituals, p. 53. There are several other fragments and reference saying it was very popular in the early 1900's.

It's possible the song infulenced the famous rock song: Are you Ready?

Are you ready, not to be alone?
Someone's coming to take you home
And if you're ready, then He'll carry you home

Possibly a 'combined' spiritual-
Going to ride up in the chariot (Gwineter Ride Up in de Chariot) with "I Want to be Ready" - "Are You Ready."

McIlhenny published "Befo' de War Spirituals" in 1933. Can't find information on when the spirituals were collected.
