The games may be in Sydney but they will not have an Aussie character. As Dobe Newton of the Bushwackers said on Saturday night, "whoever sings Waltzing Matilda at the games will sing it in an American accent". The Aussie cultural cringe is alive & kicking: whenever an Aussie sings, folkies excepted, you'll hear a fake American accent.

I was watching an episode of Ballykissangle on the box and there was the group in an Irish pub doing it with American accents. And yes, LEJ you do have an accent (it shows up in the way you spell). Everyone except me has an accent.

I will now start paying attention to the Paul Hogan Subaru Outback ads, take my Midnight Oil CDs out of mothballs, and unchain the koala bear that I have been confining to a utility closet in my basement. I will also take the jar of Vegemite out of the back of the cupboard and put it to good use, filling nail-holes in the basement drywall. |

Lots of our cultural and culinary icons seem to be emigrating to the U.S. and Canada in the last few years. So, you can have Olivia Newton John as well. helen |
