15 Apr 10 - 12:17 PM (#2887285) Subject: BS: Mongolian Disaster From: Fred McCormick I've just come across an on-line news item which says that Mongolia is currently undergoing an environmental disaster. I picked the story up at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8592408.stm and it is dated 29th March 2010. Here's the opening paragraph. "In Mongolia, what aid agencies are calling a slowly unfolding disaster is underway as extreme cold continues to devastate nomadic herder communities. As the BBC's Chris Hogg reports, about 10% of the country's livestock has perished and thousands of families have lost everything." There's quite a few stories about this on the Internet, mostly dated February or March. However there's nothing that I can see which gives the present situation, or which mentions any of the aid agencies. Does anybody know whether the disaster is still ongoing, and whether there's anywhere people can send donations? BTW., I came across this story while was doing a search for information on Mongolian music. There's lashings of info on the music, but it's a sad state of affairs when the people who make that music are dying of cold and starvation, and it goes unnoticed. |

I came across the disaster when, after deciding to play something from Mongolia on Worlds of Trad, I googled Mongolia for a bit of background information. One day I'll find a corner of the world where they've got great music without anbody starving or being oppressed or exploited. |
