National anthems at soccer games

I for some reason just love happening upon soccor teams and the whole bunch of fans etc. singing their anthems. Naturally, South Africa and Wales are incredibly good. I have heard some other good ones too.

I am a little confused about Ireland...

Are there any especially good you tubes or anthems..

Do places like Sweden do this? I presume Estonia since it is the signing country..or is that Latvia? I think it is Estonia.

Oh sad in this department to be American, however defined, to include any and all people of North, Central and South America and Greenland and and islands, territories, or those who just feel American in their hearts..anyway, we don't have a great anthem for sure.

Canada's is pretty good.

Scotland? Do they have one?

England? Not overly inspiring.

Australia? I should have listened longer but was not overly taken with it.

You were probably hearing the official anthem. The unofficial anthem might have better impressed you but I suspect it's not sung as well at soccer matches than at rugby ones.

Cheers, Rowan

You won't hear anyone singing the Spanish national anthem - it's the only one in the world that is purely instrumental. Well, that's what I heard recently on TV, and if it's on TV, it must be true, right?

Well, not sure, but it is now on the internet so it is assuredly true. mg

"Scotland? Do they have one? England? Not overly inspiring."

At most major sporting occassions the Roy Williamson (of the Corries) song Flower Of Scotland is sung. It used to be sung sponateously by the crowd during both football and rugby matches in the 70s and eventually became the official song sung prior to the match. Pre-match it ain't so great especially with the oompa bands. England still generally use the British National anthem rather than a song particular to them.

Here is a short article about the Spanish national anthem (La Marcha Real -with no official lyrics indeed) and you can hear it sung with the lyrics it first had when it was only "La Marcha Granadera" -the March of the Grenadiers. If you follow the link at the bottom of that page, you'll find other countries anthems sung (not all of them). National anthems

The great thing about the British national anthem, as generally used by England, is that it is only 14 bars long.

'......Estonia since it is the signing country?'

They sign their anthem?

There's a fabulous version of 'Flower of Scotland' by the Red Hot Chilli Pipers recorded live at one of the Rugby matches.

I would certainly agree that the English/British anthem is not inspiring but, then again, in this day and age who would actualy want to pledge allegance to an outdated monarchistic anachronism? Not many I'm sure. I am as patriotic as the next man but why should supporting our country include wishing vicory and a glorius reign for someone who should have been sold to Disney years ago? :-)

Give us a good strong anthem any day! How about 'Jerusalem' or something by either Kipling or Conan-Doyle?

Cheers

DeG

IMHO all of the above mentioned are drastically inferior to the anthems sung by the fans themselves once the imposed anthems are finished.

they should all be banned, instead they should be made to sing nursery rhymes.

Apparently, once upon a time, everybody sang their National Anthem to the same "tune" (saves time - everybody stood at once), then new tunes started to be adopted, and England's about the only country still using it.

Is Italy the only country whose National Anthem includes an overture?

Pity Fullam did'nt win the Europa cup. Their anthem is my favorite. it goes; "There's only one F in Fullam"
