Are you after Robert Tannahill's song "Gloomy winter's now awa'? The tune for it is "Lord Balgonie's Favourite" from Gow's 4th Collection of Strathspey Reels. Tune is also in 'The Scots Musical Museum', #594. [Tannahill died May 17, 1810]

Thanks for the response, I believe what I'm looking for is Tanahill's "gloomy winters now awa'" since that is the first line in Dougie Maclean's song.So many of the songs other lyrics were unintelligable to me because of the scottish dialect.

GLOOMY WINTER'S NOO AWA'
[Words by Robert Tannahill, tune traditional] arranged by the Tannahill Weavers

We always like to include a Robert Tannahill song and this is certainly on of his most beautiful, having captured, in his words and melody, the romantic feeling of spring when a young man's heart goes up and down like a venetian blind.

Note dripping icicle noises and delicately coughing blackbirds.

Gloomy winter's noo awa', saft the westlin' breezes blaw
Amang the birks o' Stanley Shaw, the mavis sings fu' cheery o
Sweet the crawflower's early bell, decks Glennifer's dewy dell
Bloomin' like your bonnie sel', my ain my darlin' dearie o
Come my lassie let us stray o'er Glennifer's sunny brae
And blythely spend the gowden day 'midst joys that never weary o

Towerin' o'er the Newton woods, lavrocks fan the snaw white clouds
And siller saughs wi' downy buds, adorn the banks sae briery o
Round the sylvan fairy nooks, feathery brackens fringe the rocks
And 'neath the brae the burnie jouks, and ilka thing is cheery o
O trees my bud and birds may sing, flowers may bloom and verdure spring
But joy tae me they cannae bring, unless wi' you my dearie o

I copied this from the Official Tannahill Weavers Website.

The following are corrections from my edition of Tannahill's Works, circa 1850: [it's printed in twice as many lines, but that's not terribly important.] Bloomin' like thy bonnie sel', My young, my artless dearie o Come my lassie let us stray o'er Glenkilloch's sunny brae Blythely ...

Siller saughs, ... Round the sylvan ...feathery brackens 'Neath the brae... Trees may bud ... Joy to me they canna' bring, unless wi' thee, my dearie o

Published with the music (Lord Balgonie's Favourite, a strathspey) in 1808.

from Chambers's Cyclopaedia of English Literature

Gloomy Winter's Now Awa'
tune: "Lord Balgonie's Favourite"
Robert Tannahill, 1808

Gloomy winter's now awa',
Saft the westlin' breezes blaw;
'Mang the birks o' Stanley-shaw
The mavis sings fu' cheerie O;
Sweet the craw-flower's early bell
Decks Gleniffer's dewy dell,
Blooming like thy bonnie sel',
My young, my artless dearie O.
Come, my lassie, let us stray
O'er Glenkilloch's sunny brae,
Blithely spend the gowden day
'Midst joys that never wearie, O.

Towering o'er the Newton woods,
Laverocks fan the snaw-white clouds;
Siller saughs, wi' downy buds,
Adorn the banks sae brierie O;
Round the sylvan fairy nooks,
Feathery breckans fringe the rocks,
'Neath the brae the burnie jouks,
And ilka thing is cheerie, O;
Trees may bud, and birds may sing
Flowers may bloom, and verdure spring,
Joy to me they canna' bring,
Unless wi' thee, my dearie, O.

Notes from glasgowguide.co.uk:

    The melody is from Nathaniel Gow's collection, and was arranged for this song by R.A. Smith, 1808. Authorship of the melody is also claimed by Alexander Campbell, in Albyn's Anthology, Volume 1.
